Buying my first MacBook, first non IPhone apple product really. Think I’m going to make the switch from PC. This is mainly going to be my 10 year old daughter’s computer but I’m sure the whole family will use it on occasion. I was just going to buy the lowest model MacBook Air but started looking at the smaller MacBook and the MacBook Pro. What the hell is the difference between the three? I think I’m leaning towards the MacBook with the 256GB as opposed to the 128GB Air. Any advice? And is there somewhere to get a better deal than 15% off + tax that I’m getting through an apple employee?

15% off is a solid deal.

I would stay away from air.

How about the MacBook and Pro? Any differences other than size and price?

Shit, I dont know what it’s for! What the hell does a 10 year old need a computer for? But apparently my wife thinks she needs one more than I need my new front bumper. :(

I’ve been saying I’m making the switch to Mac the last few years. I think I’m just going to do it now.

So looks like the MacBook has smaller screen, 256GB, slightly longer battery life, no annoying fan, less USBs ports, worse speakers.

I second bhphoto. I recommend the pro. Pro was on sale for like $150-$1000 off during bf depending on model. Keep an eye on bhphoto and you might be able to get it on sale with free exp shipping and no tax.

If you can, go to an Apple store or a Best Buy and look/play with them. I hated the MacBook keyboard as the keys were flat with the surface. The Air and Pro keys are raised and feels better to me. I went with the Air. I already graduated college and have no use for it other than to surf the net and keep photos/music stored. My wife initially had an Air as a county issued laptop as a teacher and she loved it so much I got her one the same time I got mine (Moved states so she had to return it). She’s a special education teacher and the Air is plenty for her needs.

I just got back from the apple store. I saw what you meant about the keyboards but didn’t make much difference to me. I hated them both, I like old school keyboards. I think I’m leaning towards the MacBook mainly because of storage and price. I can’t imagine having less storage than my phone. And bumping up the storage on a Pro is getting me further away from my front bumper.

May seem silly to some people, you can always buy a Bluetooth keyboard so you have a larger keyboard, plus one you like better. Not sure if it will sit at a desk or be taken around the house like mine is. But just throwing out ideas to maybe help with the hatred of the keyboard!

I can understand the storage need and wanting to make sure you have enough storage on the device. I don’t remember the price difference, I just remember when I looked at mine (Got it for $350 off at Best Buy for their Christmas in July sale), I figured I could just get a nice sized external hard drive if ever needed.

The pro has a few more features.
It sounds like the regular MacBook should be fine for what you want/need.

It’s basically going to be my kids’ and my wife and daughters just decided they’re getting rose gold so looks like I’m never taking it anywhere. I’m sure they won’t mind the keyboard since they don’t know any better.

Joon, I have the MacBook Pro Retina solid state HD. I store nothing on it and do external downloads every week to my hard drive. It is worth every penny.

Compare apples to apples when shopping for a Laptop. If you purchased a different windows based laptop with a solid state HD, the price would be the same.

MacBook Pro would be overkill for school unless they start running programs that require the power such as photo and video editing, developing apps, music, etc. I have a MacBook Pro and my adobe, logic x, komplete, etc software runs so smooth and photos and video upload quickly

Sounds like the 12" Macbook would be a good fit, unless you wanted to spend a bit more for more capability for graphics-intensive applications, then go Pro. My wife has a 12" macbook thats a couple years old now and it has been good for her. I just upgraded to a 15" Pro from my old 13" Pro (2010 model I bought new, CAD software and the higher-res video/photos were killing it now) and it has been great so far. Getting used to the size. Thought the touch bar is a gimmick... still mostly think so. lol. The lowest model 13" Pro is still a very nice computer but a little more capable than the 12"

Okay, I think I’m going with a MacBook. I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything major missing that the Pro has. @froggy78 was telling me his Pro has a feature where the pornstars pop out of the screen and gives head... but I’m starting to think that was a lie. Just read up a little on the Air and glad you guys talked me out of that one. Thanks to everyone.

I was burning through PC's once every 12-18 months because they would be infected and slow as shit. I've had my MacBook Pro 4.5 years now and it still runs like the day I took it out of the box. I have also dropped it from 3+ feet off the couch at least 20 times.

Ive got a macbook pro 15” thats 4.5 yrs old and it still works good. My only complaint on it is that it is a little heavy (i noticed this mainly whenever i was going to college and toting it around everywhere). If i was going to buy another one, i would get an air since it is much lighter and i dont need the cd drive hardly ever. Other than that you cant go wrong with a mac, they seem to never slow down unlike pc’s.

Exactly. That’s why I want to make the switch over to Macs. My PCs last 2 years max. Plus all our phones are Apple. Anyways, leaving now to go pick it up. Decided on the MacBook in rose gold. I made my case for another color but had no chance against 3 girls.

My wife recently replaced her MacBook Pro (it was like 7 years old) with new MacBook and loves it. Several years ago MacBook Air was the way to go if you wanted flash drive laptop. Now all the Mac laptops have flash drive (hence more $$). MacBook is more recently refreshed model, from what I understand.

I have dropped my MacBook Pro more than once with no negative effect. Apple products are worth the $$, imo. I ran over my wife's iPhone with my Tundra and it's still going strong.

By the way, because of home-schooled kids, we have to deal with PCs, and I am always reminded why I abandoned Windows years ago.

I purchased a 13" Pro for work in 2016 before they released the updated model with Thunderbolt 3 ports (mine still has HDMI and USB ports) and let me tell you, I will never buy another PC again. The Macbook is so much more refined, and since I converted to an iPhone a few years ago, all my data syncs in the cloud. My two partners bought HPs and they've already had them worked on twice each.

I just bought my wife a new generation 15" Pro with 27" 4K monitor for Christmas and the setup kicks ass for her (she's a photographer). It's a really clean setup with a USB-C hub and one cord plugging into the computer itself when she's working in desktop mode.

yeah i would like the USB ports built in vs adding external dongles. i don't really have a need for the new track bar either.
maybe they will have a left over 2016 model and i can just buy that! i know the minute i buy it will be outdated anyways. got by the last 9 years with the junk windows PC i have now
