AFE Drop in Filter Dry or Oiled

    Not enough space here...
    2017 Crewmax 5.7 with Bullydog GT Tuner and soon to be BAMF 8" mufflers, then possibly some long tube headers...maybe

    Looking at getting an AFE drop in filter. Mainly because I hear it could potentially add a few HP. Anyone have experience with them? Seems to be a grey one (dry) and a blue one (oiled)? What's the difference? I live in Vegas, so really only thing we deal with is dust.

    Apparently going the CAI route is a waste of money for no gain....

    You’d probably gain more horsepower from the oiled one but it’s not going to filter as well. Horsepower gains I’m sure are negligible. But I am one of those guys that will take every horse power he can get LOL. As long as they are safely acquired. But still I’d probably go dry. Without doing a search I assume the dry one is paper?

    I went with dry! Been extremely impressed with the amount of dust that it catches when I clean it.
    Oil can get sucked through the filter and clog the mass air flow sensor and create problems later on. Not to meantion it’s more work cleaning and re oiling.

    I run a Pro Dry S in mine and also put one in my dad's 4.6 Tundra and my brothers 5.7 Tundra. The dry has a slightly better flow rate and filtration efficiency than the oiled filter. It's also easier to clean and as @Bannock452 mentioned, oiled filters have the potential to cause MAF sensor problems. If over oiled, excess oil can collect on the wires in the sensor causing false readings and throwing codes.

    I have the TRD intake (which has to be oiled). If you oil the filter like an idiot and over-oil it, you could throw a code due to dirty MAF sensor. As long as you follow the instruction when oiling it, you should be fine. Once you do it, then you will realize how easy the process actually is.

    I had one in my FJ Cruiser. I went with the Dry for maintenance reasons. Just rinse it off, let it dry, pop it back in. I didnt want to screw around with oil.

    I ran a K&N oily filter in my first tacoma. The check engine light was on most of the time because of a dirty MAF sensor. The oil caused it. Dry only.

    That only happens if you over oil. I've used drop in K&Ns for over 40 years with zero issues. Zero. It's not rocket science. A thin layer. Imagine a spider web.The thin layer adds, emphasis on "adds" extra grabbing capability to block more dirt, etc than a dry filter can do. Go wet......

    Do your homework. lol..Most aftermarket makers of "high performance" air filters that claim any significant HP gains and actually publish empirical data (look the term up, you might learn something) the data always show any HP gain at around 4500 RPM and up.....The point lost on so many concerning air filters is...ta dah!!!=filtration capability...not HP gain.

    Thats exactly where I'm looking to gain hp....you know when I actually get on the gas.... not sure anything adds hp when you are just cruising down the highway at a steady 2k rpm...

    No offense but the last thing I'd think of gaining HP is the air filter route. Same with worthless throttle body spacers. It looks like you've done pretty well already with the bully dog. The BAMF's would be killer along with the long tubes. Looks like you are on the right track. Just think you may be disappointed with any air filter HP gain.

    And it's not like an air filter is a huge investment. Actually you could try out different filters. I haven't read anything bad about the Afe. Quite the contrary and it's not a throw away. :thumbsup:
