Very amazing place indeed. It spent 10 months up there in 2012. Going to take couple weeks off next fall and do some hunting. I have a friend with a lodge between Anchor Point and Ninilchik. Plenty of moose and bear all over. Moose sirloins are quite tasty (and crazy big). My friend went up to visit 19 years ago and never left. Kotzebue is a great place to hunt. Not exactly on the beaten path. heh heh.

It helps to know a few folks up there. Especially if one owns a lodge and his brother is a guide. For those of you in the Coast Guard, Army, AF: You could always apply for a transfer to one of the bases up there. Problem solved.

I thought you may still be active. I spent a week at Ft Greeley for a contract calibration job in 2012. Quite a place. Lots of anti-ballistic missiles and other need to know devices there. Eielson AFB and Elmendorf AFB. F-22's zipping around very day in Anchorage with Elmendorf there. Coast Guard>>>>> KODIAK!!!

You guys that can get stationed there, take advantage of it. You are considered a resident without having to wait a year. So you don't need a guide to hunt sheep, goat and brown bears.

Guides aren't cheap either. Non-resident license fees are night and day apart for big game compared to resident fees, although non-resident fishing licenses are fairly reasonable to be able to fish the best place on the planet and no guide required. If I recall correctly residents are allowed to cut 10 cords of wood too, not to mention the yearly oil revenue payout each year (that gets smaller and smaller).

I came across a lot of civilian contractors working on the bases. Any skilled jobs are in high demand. Pipe Fitters make a small fortune there for example. Too many locals too stoned out for the highest paying good jobs. If you have a secret clearance any things goes.

Most of my buddies up there work the oil industry either on the slope, a platform or in Russia. I've been asked a hundred times if I would go work up there since I used to have a secret clearance from my days working in the Lockheed skunkworks. I have no desire to ever work for someone else again.
Alaska is an awesome place. The key is getting away from the road system. If you're hunting, charter a bush plane that can get you away from the masses but do your homework. There are a few popular places that get hammered even away from civilization.
Prices are only going to go up. We paid almost $9 a gallon for avgas this year. Figure two planes at 9-10 gallons per hour, just fuel alone is a small fortune. Food in a remote village will downright scare you.
Milk, $11 per gallon. If they have any at all.

My boss and I flew in to Kokhanok, an indian village on Iliamna Lake ( below Mt Iliamna, an active volcano) just before Xmas 2012. We were there to install and calibrate a wireless setup to control the villages' first water treatment/sewer plant (no more honey buckets in theory). The weather turned from bad to totally fracked up. Afte being socked in for 2 days, a local drove us about 30 miles down a frozen river to another "airstrip". There are no roads. The state sent in a larger plane better equipped for the weather (in theory) to get us. The only reason the state did that was because we had two state engineers on our crew. (IMO) I have video of the plane spinning in a slow circle on the ice about 4 times before it stopped. Brakes not too effective on ice at all. Pilot gets out and says "Are you ready?" heh heh. I'll try to find the clip.

Side note: I used to go up to Palmdale after the Skunkworks moved there. Our lab had a contract with the Skunkworks facility and Lockheeds' Shuttle Recovery Team Unit. Most of the test equipment was brought to our lab in Van Nuys but twice a year I had to go to the old converted L1011 building and the F-22 building to calibrate certain "items" that had to be done in place. My contact was Joe Schnieder. It was always a real total pain in the ass working there since everything was so compartmentalized. I still had my clearance and it was an ordeal. I know you get my drift. The last time I went up there, they were doing the first vertical lift tests of the soon to be Marine version of the F-35. I still have some Skunkworks calibration stickers they had me use.

Iliamna Lake. Lots of moose, bear and other critters that can F you up. Often over looked for hunting. Lots of vertical terrain on the east and north shores. Great fishing and even has its own version of the Loch Ness monster thingy.

I was the M.E. on the two prototype F-22s. That was the best program I worked on. Mainly because we had a great project manager that hand picked everyone for that program.
I've flown over Illiamna many times headed south down the penninsula for spring brown bear. We fly about 100 ft. down the beach looking for dead walrus so we can land and pull the tusks. That's some remote country down there.
