Wondering how much weight to put over my rear axle when it snows this year. I have heard people say 200lbs all the way up to 1500lbs. Last year my truck was brand new to me so it stayed parked and I drove my Cherokee. This year I have new tires and am used to how it drives. Live in southeast Pa so we get a decent amount of snow, but not like in the mountains. Thanks for any advice.

I live in Central New York where we do get a fair amount of snow. I run winter tires on the truck but don't bother with extra weight in the bed.

    Everything. Literally.
None with the 4wd and MTs on the tundra.

    About 200 when I had a 2wd Silverado.

just be mindful that any weight in the bed will become a missile in a emergency stop situation. use to use 70lbs bag for weight but after a slight emergency stop, never again. I tell the wife if its that slippery just use the 4x4 knob. no point in having a 4x4 if you are not going to use and I tell her to use at any time.

our winters are long and brutal so use it.

When I go up to the local mountains and drive in the snow, I have not had one problem with the small amount of weight that I carry in the bed. A.k.a. snow gear sleds and ice chest. I have gone with zero in the bed and not had any issues with traction.

I would say... 1 to 2 average build dead bodies would be perfect.

I have a single sled deck that weight 200 lb or so? Makes a huge difference in traction with 2wd. Have seen people use a steel plate, takes up almost 0 space.

Thanks for the info. All my past pickups were 2WD and needed the weight. Tundra is my first 4x4 truck, but have had a couple jeeps. Looks like I will give it a shot with nothing in the bed.
I do know anything back there becomes a projectile in a crash, I used to strap down scrap steel over the axle with more straps than necessary. Thanks for the heads up tho @nodak67.

Sand bags if you’re not running snow tires helps but 4x4 helps more

200 lbs is what I used to put back there

How much does a cubic foot of snow weigh?

Whatever doesn’t blow out of the bed, and tie down straps is about it.

Between 200 & 300lbs I have currently use four 70lb sand bags. It's more of a precaution then a necessity. I've been caught before without weight and haven't had any trouble. It's that wet heavy snow you gotta watch out for. Powder is easy.

300 lbs of secured weight, Iowa can be a bitch in the winter and most county plows go home when the sun goes down.

Firestone Airbags; remote starter; replaced stock mirrors with larger, pull-out mirrors for towing; hard plastic sectional cover for bed.
x2.....don't need any if you have 4x4, and about 200 pounds if you don't. (Home Depot usually has sand bags that weigh about 100 pounds.) Some use concrete bags placed inside Home Depot buckets, too.
