I noticed that for alot of the "chrome" grill owners, they've either embraced their love of chrome, or have switched to the color matched hood bulge/grill surround. I've also noticed a couple tundra's with some cheap approach to getting rid of the chrome, bedliner/plasti dip. Those of you that have gone the plasti-dip/bedliner look, how has it held up? Would you go that route again?

Also....if you rock a MGM tundra, and have gone the black grill route I'd love to see what it looks like on the gray.

    Thanks

Right on...I think with the black ends and grill its a different look than everyone running around with their color matched

I only have the grille insert plastidipped. I'm sick of it. It's always dirty and I peeled a small section with my powerwasher. I'm on a mission to get rid of all the dip. I already got rid of the dipped wheels and the center emblem. I think I'm going to try bedliner or rattle can next on the grille.

I rattle canned mine with automotive spray paint. It hasn't held up as well as I would have liked. Its starting to sparkle where the chrome is showing through from rock chips/bug hits/trees/etc.

I sanded all of the chrome/plastic, cleaned with acetone, 3 coats of flat black and 3 of clear coat. I probably should have waxed it, too, but I ran out of time and subsequently forgot about it. If you're going this route, be very careful with how you spray the paint on or it will not dry evenly.

I plan on having the front bedlined with a smooth liner to hopefully eliminate the pitting.

i have a buddy that did bedliner on his bumpers and mirror caps and it worked out fine. the biggest drawback to me is that every time i see bedliner anywhere on a truck that isn't the box it's actual draws my eyes to it instead of seamlessly blending.

On my 2016 I had mine sprayed in scorpian liner and hood bulge for $50 from a shop.

Before that I painted it, sand and sand, no shiney plastic. Adhesion promoter very lightly sprayed, and gave 10-15 min to tack up before I sprayed. Never had an issue

The bed liner will always fade and look like crap requiring some sort of shine product. The rough finish will also look like crap close up. Bite the bullet and buy the grill, surround, and bulge color you want.

    Wife, kids, $1500 vs $250 diy on a used surround/bulge I bought.

I'll try DIY first before I spend their much coin on a cosmetic plastic grill.

I've see what it look like on other trucks and don't mind the rough look. Point taken though.

This is what I paid for the TRD Sport color matched grill, insert, and bulge.

USA prices, need TSS, inflated prices up here, I can't get it for anywhere close to that. The Cavalry Blue color match from most places is a lot more too, so I will likely end up with Black in any circumstance, which I actually prefer over color match on my truck anyways.

I'm not saying I won't end up going that route in the future or just buying a standard non TRD in black, but I'm going to try the DIY route first. Many have done it and appears to suit their needs.

I was able to get a used chrome hood & bulge locally for $75. So $75 in parts, $75 in paint and chemicals, I figured it was worth a shot.

We are spraying today. If it doesn't turn out, it was a fun project to do with my 13y old son and learn a few things about assembly and disassembly of the grille, surround, headlights etc, along the way. If it does turn out, we can be proud we did it ourselves and saved a bunch of money for other mods...plus a little something different than every other blacked out surround driving around our town.

I've got a raptor liner kit sitting in my garage for this exact project. So did you use etching primer on the chrome or just clean and spray away? Dreading taking it all apart but that looks superb and worth the time.

    Update.

Mine is holding strong, not a single chip or flaw.

About $50-75 in sprays, adhesives, including the rattle can dispenser attachment.

Added Bumpershellz in TPO to complete the look.
