Tundra fuel economy 5.7

I’m sure it’s worth every penny

 

Not sure why he would be confused. I am a member of several forums and everyone on them seems to know that people do not buy Tundras for the MPGs. On the Texas Fishing Forum there are a bunch off Ford nuts. Every time a truck discussion comes come you see the comments like "buy a Tundra and you will not be passing many gas stations". Of course there are several of us that jump in with "buy a Ford or Chevy and you will not be passing anything because it will be in the shop". I paid less upfront for my Tundra than I would have a Ford and while I may get lower MPGs I will make it up in total cost of ownership. Brother has a 2017 5.0 Ford and he gets about the same MPGs as I do.

 

Muscle cars are never worth every penny, they are just big money pits. They are a lot of fun though and are a good conversation piece everywhere you stop and get out of the car.

 

I get about 11.8 but don't do much on the highway and everywhere I go I seem to be driving up a hill. Used to get about 8 in my old Chevy with a 454 so this doesn't hurt as bad as that did.

You must have a really heavy foot.

 

I may or may not had a Prius years ago. I'd get 50 MPG out of it easy. I don't understand how some Tundra guys are getting over 15 MPG. I don't push mine hard at all.

I have a buddy with the same truck, his tires already got replaced cause he drove them bald... but he still gets 15 MPG.

 

Maybe the type of driving you do, like mostly city or stop and go traffic. I get pretty good mileage but have really not a lot of stop and go traffic except when I get to the gate of the Army base where I work. When I had the F-150 EB I hardly ever got below 20 mpg, there are members on the F-150 forum that would average 5 to 6 mpg less. Everybody drives differently.

 

I'm averaging between 15 and 16mpg. That's about right. I didn't buy it for gas mileage. If that was the case I'd buy what everybody else down here is driving (F150 ecoboost). Enjoy standing out from the crowd. I've experimented with different octane gas. I get about 1mgp better if I go to 89 and nothing with 93 octane. I'll stick with the 87.

 

I had three ecoboost F-150s and they get good gas mileage IF you drive sensible. I towed a car trailer (around 6000 pounds) a few times and mileage drops to 11 mpg. The 3.5 EB gives you two choices, either eco or boost; you can't have both of them at the same time!

 

This is for a 133 mile round trip from Eugene to Florence ( on the Oregon coast for those of you out of staters ) two lane road over the Coast Range on a rainy day. Average speed about 55 MPH... stock TRD tires and wheels... meh... not bad...

 

I'm down to 12.7 mpg now that it's cold out and pumping winter fuel. I don't do much highway driving at all. I got around 15 in the summer. Stock suspension, 33" Michelin defenders.
Compare that to my tacoma 4.0, I'd get about 17 in summer and 14 in winter. So it's not much different than the V6 I had.

 

Pretty crazy huh... my tacoma 4.0 would get about 18-19 on the highway with stock everything (thats if I was going under 70 mph). My 18 tundra gets a little over 17 highway with the same winter blend going the same speeds. What a damn joke I am so glad I traded up to a Tundra. The 4.0 is seriously a marvel and a turd at the same time.

 

Simple. You have to mix highway travel in as well. I would guess very few are getting that kind of mileage on strictly city stop/go driving.

 

here is the mpg since we picked it up. the 15-16 dec we drove ~500 miles one way to go pickup a new GSP puppy from ND to SD (75mph speed limit in ND and 80mph speed limit in SD)

 

Im with you on Tacoma vs Tundra gas mileage. The absolute best my 2000 V6 Tacoma would get was 17 mpg. The 2010 Tundra 5.7 I have now gets between 14-17; mostly in the 16mpg range. I now have a whole lot more truck with about the same gas mileage. I must admit, I do miss the simplicity of my older Tacoma though.

 

I drive kinda a mix. Back roads and city roads, but the back roads are 55mph and not much stopping so that helps.

I will say this is better than my 2004 GMC got on the same route.

 

I was getting 13-14 consistently w my 3” sparer lift and 33” tires. I got Toytec radflo’s, rotated my tires and got a new alignment. Now I’m avg 10-13! What the hell happened!

Also what are you guys getting avg 80–85mph on the fwy? I did that for about 100 miles and got 10mpg....

 

I got 19-20 in my 4.0 Tacoma unless I ran 75+. Then it started dropping off in a hurry. Tundra is not bad on the hwy but I can see how people are getting low MPGs in town. Tundras seem to guzzle gas at idle and accelerating. Traffic jams kill my MPGs.

 

I agree. I do mainly short trips and mostly lower speed suburban roads and am getting just over 12 mpg with 285/65/18 KO2's and winter fuel blend. I also use my remote start a lot which doesn't help. The only way I see people getting real good mileage seems to be on the highway doing 55-65 or so. I did a 200+ trip at mostly 70-75mph and got just over 17 mpg.

 

With a 38 gallon tank I really do not worry. Instead of toyota increasing mpg since 2007 they just gave it a larger glass to drink from

 

In my 14 I was doing 20 with Hypertech interceptor and calibrator, and Volant Intake, TRD dual's. Amsoil Signature in engine and Amsoil in all diffs and transfer. Picked my 18 up in November, and it felt so tight compared to my 14. However, it had better low end and still does. Don't see myself ever modding the intake or exhaust again. Will dump oil at 1000 miles, and drop in Amsoil. Drop again at 5K, and thereafter. The Amsoil really makes the engine smooth and loose.

 

Did you not like the trd dual exhaust or did it impact mpg

 

And I paid $2.18 per G for 87 gas with my Kroger gas points. MPGs?? What's that??

 

Ha its actually feet per gallon. But I didnt buy another tundra for the gas mileage I bought her to be used what she was bred for a damn good hauler

 

I love these fuel mileage discussions. I know people that have ecoboost Ford's (6 cylinder) and flex fuel Chevys. I have a 18 tundra, We all get between 14-18 pending on driving habits and obviously towing it goes way down. I had a 17 Tacoma and that got 17-18 all day long, so hence I'm glad I upgraded to the tundra.
So my opinion, any truck out there is not getting great gas mileage, whether it' ecoboost, flex fuel, or I force. Unless they launch a hybrid or all electric truck, they have been and always will be mileage wise not that great.
When someone asks me how is it on mileage, I laugh and say it's a truck.

Meter Per Gallon???

 

No I loved it. But, it did take away a little low end, but gained it about 4K. However, having a complete bone stock 2018, I prefer the stock set up now. Just more responsive.
