2015 Tundra 5000km later... Mouse damage somewhere in engine.

I just took my 2015 crewmax to the dealer due to an engine light being on. The dealer looked at the engine and found that there are mice footprints on it. He informed me that if there is mouse damage then it is not covered under warranty.

So why would Toyota leave the engine open for critters to camp? I also read that soy is use in some of the materials thus the mice chewing for it.

Please help me, this may come out to be a huge bill and I am not inclined to pay for it.

 

I always clean the mouse footprints off before I take my vehicle in...

 

No possible way for them to close up the entire engine bay. Mice will find their way into anything.

 

Sometimes insurance will cover rodent damage, certainly worth a phone call to your insurance company to check. Good luck.

 

It's very unfortunate, but it's not Toyota's fault. This happens a lot with cars, seriously think about how you would completely seal the engine bay, and what manufactures do that?

This happened to a friend of mine on his 2012 RW, there was minor damage from the mice chewing the wires. They fixed it and it wasn't too expensive. Hopefully yours won't be too bad.

 

Not to mention if the engine bay was enclosed, imagine how hot it would be in there...

 

Most of the vehicles I've seen with rodent damage are driven very infrequently.

Apparently they don't like car rides as much as my dogs.

 

Sorry to hear man, they got me a few months ago. They chewed through my windshield wiper fluid lines. They also got in my VW but thankfully only chewed alittle firewall. Supposivly you can buy a light that flashes under the hood and keeps them away. I just check it once every two weeks now.

 

Check your cabin air filter also as that is one of their favorite places to hang out! I had one get in there on my G35. Started feeding them those nice little "food bricks" and the problem resolved itself!

It's my daily driver! I was gone for just over two weeks on vacation and came back to that. They actually built another one a few days later within 48 hours. Supposivly once you have them, you have to spray the bay out really good because the smell of their urine keeps them coming back.

 

On a side note, I had left my Corolla in a parking lot in a rural area for a week in the summer while I was away. A few days later I started to smell something. I sent through the car and found that I had an unzippered cooler on the floor in the back seat with a Cliff bar in it. Something had chewed through the sealed foil wrapper. I checked the car for a nest and saw in the trunk the foam under the carpet near the spare had been all chewed up and there was a small nest at the bottom of the area for the spare. The little shit died somewhere in the dash, I never found it. Dealt with the smell until it went away. No clue how it got inside the car, maybe the firewall?

 

Next time you are out of town, lay out a bunch mouse traps with trail cam. heh heh

 

Haha yeah man. I accidently solved the problem I think. A month or so ago I was running my outboard in a trash can filled with water while working on it. Smelled decamp a few days later and noticed 3 of the bastards fell in the trash can and couldn't get out. No signs of any since.

 

Apparently, mice do not like the smell of moth ball, fabric softener, and peppermint oil. I don't like moth ball smell, and I don't like the idea of fabric softener in the engine bay. So I use peppermint oil. I just rub it on different places in the engine bay (the most common target for rodents). You do have to reapply them every now and then.

 

Forget where I read it but Irish Spring soap is supposed to repell the little darlings too. I keep a few left-over 'slivers' under the hood and inside.
