Dealership Messed Up My Truck!

I took my Tundra in for its 15k mile service. Guy at counter tells me tire rotate and top off fluids, but no oil change. He supports his argument by also showing me that at my 5k service, no oil change was performed either.

OMG. My 5.7 FFV needs an oil change very 5k miles!

Back when I had 5k on the ODO, I specifically told them to change my oil because that's what Toyota recommends and I had a long road trip coming up. He says okay. Turns out they just topped off fluids and rotated tires. So up until now, I thought I completed that entire trip with new oil, but was not the case.

I towed my 4500lb travel trailer up and down mountains at elevations up to 5500ft and in 100+ degree weather for 3.5 weeks. I ended up putting 5000 miles on it.

I tell the supervising manager all about this. I'm concerned about my engine not getting the required oil change it needed. And the fact that I drove it hard after I thought I got the oil change. I have no idea what this is going to do to the engine. You'd be concerned too, right? He goes through the motion of hearing me out and saying how he understands, but he responds by saying that there's nothing he can do. All he'll do is give me a free oil change when I'm at 30k miles.

So he's giving me what I didn't get. Obviously he has to do that, but he's acting like he's doing me a favor. But the fact that they failed to give me the oil change in the first place could have very negative consequences and they are not addressing that issue.

I asked for an extension on my powertrain warranty. He said no.

What can I do? I'm pissed off they screwed up, not even acting like they care, and not being responsive. (Typical dealership crap.) This place has essentially voided my warranty if you want be technical. They are totally responsible.

Anyway, what course of action should I take next? I'd really like an extension on the warranty, or free x-number of oil changes equal to the price of a warranty extension.

Corporate told me I'd have to work it out with the dealership.

Do I contact the CEO? Email him? Try talking to corporate again? What else?

Do you guys even tow/haul for over 5k miles before changing the oil? Should I be concerned?

I get it though, my transmission went at 2,3xx miles. I was livid, first new vehicle ever, right away I get a remanufactured transmission in it that may have towed a 5th wheel for all I know. Just my luck, right? Then a loose heat shield rattle they couldn't find after multiple trips to the dealership, which I found/fixed within 30 seconds of crawling under the truck.

If they suck go elsewhere.

Maybe ask to speak with customer service at the dealership and explain the situation, maybe they can get you a free one sooner than 30k, etc?

I'm just concerned because I just bought this truck earlier this year, and I'm gonna try to keep it for a long time and want to take good care of it. The fact that the first oil change at 4000 miles was missed and I towed heavily until mile 9,500 concerns me.

 

lol..I think you'll be ok. If you tow a lot you should start doing your own maintenance. So that you know for sure it was done..and right.
keep the dealership for major maintenance or warranty work.
if you can find a local trustworthy mechanic, it's even better.

I always double check dealership work. called their game multiple times where they said something was done but it wasn't.

 

Thanks. They do suck. I had to educate them before with my Tacoma and how it needed conventional every 5k. They kept saying synthetic every 10k. Smh.

I bought the truck new so I get 2yr/25k free maintenance.

No but I almost did when I was out west during the road trip. Don’t have e85 here in Chicago. Thank goodness I didn’t cuz if I did, I’d really be freaking out.

 

Well I have similar plans with keeping my truck for a long time. I don't drive it a ton, I only have 13,XXX miles now and it's a 14'. I calmly called Toyota and articulated my concerns, they were able to extend my warranty out further to cover the transmission a bit more.

My transmission was obviously defective, it had nothing to do with wear and tear. I believe our transmissions are quite bulletproof. I'm not a tech, but I am OCD with my stuff, try not to stress about it.

Fortunately I haven't had any other issues since.

 

You may be running on Synthetic. If that’s the case, I wouldn’t worry

 

It is a waist of money to change synthetic at 5000 mile intervals. Your truck will be fine

You are running synthetic. Toyota Care on Tundras only covers oil changes every 10k which is what is in the manual. I would not worry about it. It was only one oil change. There are Syns made that go 15k and might even be some to 20k. Next time you go on a long trip change it yourself or take it to someone else. If you told dealer that you were paying for then I understand being pissed off. Confusion on Gen 2 Tacomas was because the 4 banger had Syn while the 6 had conventional. Sales guy told me that my Tacoma had Syn and first change would be at 10k. I had to correct him and then he admitted he was wrong. Not unusual for an educated consumer to know more than some people at dealership. I had a Ford sales manager comment once that I knew more about truck than his sales people. I expect the sales staff to be uneducated but service should know better.

 

with synthetic you are fine. find something else to worry about ... lol
fyi, my co-worker took his car in for an oil change when it had about 6500 miles and dealer told him 1 year or 10K and didn't change it.

 

This is what I use just in case I go over my 5K ...But I Do Change every 5k.. Also my Toyota Dealer let me use all my Free Oil Changes Every 5k..

 

Don't let Them Stress You...Just If there is one near you try to start going to another Toyota Dealer..I have 2 with in 20 min of each other.

 

Your truck oil change intervals are every 10,000 miles. Your truck will be fine. I understand that you're upset that you asked him to change it up 5000 and they did it which they should have. The issue is more they didn't change your oil at the time you asked them too not they messed up your truck. If you're that worried about it I would say try to get them to document they did not change your oil when you requested them to. Also if you need to have any type of factory warranty work done on it and they look at them see that you got your oil changed every 10,000 miles it's gonna be perfectly fine.

 

That's what frustrates me. They should know better, but I understand they can't. But when an actual owner who really cares about his investment did the research and knows a lot about his truck, is telling the service advisor what his truck's scheduled service requires, they stand there and think you're still wrong and they know better.

I had a 2015 4.0L V6 Tacoma. I had to go out of my way to teach them that they needed to change out my oil at my 25k service. When they realized they were wrong, they were about to put in the wrong (syn) oil in. Had to educated them about that one too.

Also, if you have a Flex Fuel engine, and you bought your truck new, you're SUPPOSED to get free oil changes until 2yr/25k under No Cost Toyota Care.

Dealership can't argue with that.

I appreciate all the replies I got to this original post, but this message actually sounds like the best suggestion. I got my oil replaced yesterday, so I'll take a sample after 5k miles.

 

Exactly right. 2500k interval if E85 was used. Actually saw a few gas stations that had that stuff when I was out on my road trip. That stuff was much cheaper, but I put in good ol' regular gas. I would be flipping my lid if did use that garbage and found out dealership didn't change the oil.

 

I'd be annoyed, but I doubt they "messed up your truck." I was fighting for the 5k change on my non-flex and they woulden't budge. Oil is pretty damn good these days - unless you ran it with low oil for a while, I'm sure your motor is just as good as it was before the headache.

Always check the sheet they give you, if for no other reason than a good laugh. The last two times they have marked my spare tire pressure settings, but I don't have a spare tire. Huh? They pencil whip those forms.

 

My truck also has the Flex Fuel engine ad I know they don't mention the required 5K oil change in either the owner's manual or the maintenance guide. I found the Toyota document mentioned in post #21 some time ago and printed it off and saved the link on my phone. When I drop my truck off for the first service I will talk to the service advisor and I will also put a small paint mark on my oil filter. My oil and filter will get changed.

 

Who cares more about your truck? The service mechanic or you?

If you want things done right do it your self. Mistakes are less likely to happen that way.

 

You are fine.
If you are really concerned, spend the cash to send in an oil analysis.

I'd have it documented in writing that the dealership failed to preform the oil change at your 5k service.

 

Yeah it’s pretty annoying that the dealers don’t know the flex fuels are 5000/6 mos. I went in at my 6 months and gave up after arguing a bit. But only because I was only at 2500 miles and thought it wasn’t worth pissing off the dealer on my first visit. If I were at 5000 miles, you better believe I would’ve gotten my oil changed. You do have the right to be upset but like others said... your truck will be okay.

 

Isn't the first oil change at 5k miles the most important? I know my owners manual says every 5k miles oil change. I'd be pretty upset myself. I've went into the Toyota dealer to get a Prius services and tire rotation, they ended up doing the rotation and completely forgot to do the oil change. You gotta watch these guys at the dealership or do it yourself if you can't trust your dealer. I personally feel like the whole 3K, 5K oil change is a racket to sell more services and oil. I think you can go about 10k between oil changes. I had a Porsche Cayenne that had service intervals every 10K miles. What makes it any better than any other car engine. Same oil being used for the most part.

When I was in the Army, they used to have a Auto shop garage on post where you could rent space to work on your car. Wish there was something like that in the civilian world.

 

It really only needs to be changed every 10000 with synthetic, unless you are doing a lot of towing or off roading Anything more is kind of money down the drain

 

Good reason to never buy a flex fuel truck.
