Just pulled the trigger on a full replacement of the crappy “premium” stock stereo. It will be installed the second week of December. I will be utilizing a kenwood head unit, hertz Mille front stage components, 2 hertz amplifiers and a pair of Rockford Fosgate 10’s in a custom enclosure behind the seat in my CM. Will also be getting the remote start installed then as well....luckily it hasn’t been too cold around here yet!

List of stuff going in the truck.....

Kenwood DNX994S Head Unit w/ Maestro module
    Hertz Mille Components MLK1650.3
    Hertz HPD4 Amplifier
    Hertz HPD1 Sub Amplifier
Rockford Fosgate P3 shallow mount 10" subwoofers (2)
    Remote Start
Fair amount of sound deader on the back wall and doors.

I’m no audiophile but the JBL in my Platinum sounds like crap. Not even close to a premium system IMO. Debating what to do and will wait to see how the others make out here.

I had three Siennas and now a Tundra CM SR5 with JBL 6 disc stock systems. All sound great to me with CDs playing. I am also an Audiophile with my home systems. Not judging you. Everyone has different ears and tastes. Good luck. D

2008 and 2014+ sound system are totally different. They really messed up the newer JBL. I drive around with it set at 53+ out of 60. If the windows are down and you are driving 55 you have a hard time hearing the radio. Very little mids and no bass coming from the subwoffer. Mine is working just not producing much sound. Everything is coming from the dash for the most part. You are not engulfed in sound.

What year do you have? if its pre 2014 that is why. While the 2018 JBL is ok with the windows up and set at 53 its missing most the frequencies and everything is coming from the dash other then the front doors rattle to try an make some bass which the subwoffer should be doing. It does not surround you with sound. My 2006 taco was better.

Im in the process of getting the parts to replace mine. Once i do i am going to make a comparison video.

I have a 2017 Platinum and agree with the above, mine is complete garbage. All of the lows come from the door speakers, most of everything else comes from the dash speakers, the highs are muddy, and the sub does nothing. You have to really crank it up to even hear it. I will eventually replace every bit of this crap.

I wish that was the case but it’s not. I have had B&O and Bose systems in my other cars (were only about an $800 option) and they sounded fantastic. My wife’s MDX sounds much better than mine. So far I have experienced the same as @Cuzican explains above. Most likely will just bite the bullet and replace it all at some point.

I have a 2016 platinum and the stereo is really good imho. And I’m a music guy, always playing loud rock. I find I need to turn bass down a bit or things rattle and shake a bit.

I had Bose in my Yukon Denali 2008. The Toyota is a bit better stereo but I hate the Toyota nav screen compared to Denali.

I went from a '13 CM Limited to an '18 CM Limited....both JBL Premium...night and day difference. I contacted Toyota, and had it at my dealer; I was told it's "functioning as designed". The first time I went to crank it up, I thought there was a setting I was missing....nope...it was Toyota that missed! Not even close to the sound in my '13.

Perhaps we should make some youtube vids for comparison? I don't doubt at all that yours doesn't sound right. In my Yukon, every once in a while a couple or few speakers would stop working due to the computer system needing some sort of reset. When it did that, you could instantly tell how crappy it sounded. Again, mine is the 2016 Platinum Crew Cab yada yada.

I really wish Toyota would have kept this system as stand-alone vs including it in the Limited Premium package. I wanted all the other features in that package so I was left with paying the additional premium (no pun intended) for the JBL. For the same $’s I know I can easily beat it with aftermarket. Never liked paying for an upgraded stereo from the factory. Oh well.

From much of what I’ve read, I am thinking the system may be short-lived for me. However, I am not buying the replacement just yet. Going with the “wait and see” approach.

Ok, so here is my test. I raised the bass and after doing so, my hand could feel the sub woofer pulsing, but at the standard setting I didn't. My stereo works great, sounds good to me. I'd be awful pissed if I bought a truck for big bucks and the sound system wasn't working or sounded bad.

Warning, music for hard core metal audiences only...

I’m glad it is good for you. A lot cheaper that way.

A sub should not need for you to put your hand there to tell it’s working. Even with only a small sub you should feel it when it hits. It does not have to rattle the windows to tell it’s there.

I have installed aftermarket Kenwood 694s and only what else I have remote starter and alarm that is aftermarket. This morning after one week without starting my tundra at cold Chicago area my tundra won't start due to drained battery (not completely dead) but probably half way down.
Truck is 2 years and two months old. Is that normal to OEM batteries go bad after two years?

Would like to mention that I have Viper remote and alarm from day one never had issues until I installed last Sunday my Kenwood unit with maestro module and harnesses.

    Please advise.

No it's just straight replacement of the unit. I have use iDataLink Maestro with their harness and that's all.

I was very much into audiophile equipment and setups, until I had to make the room more kid friendly, now its kind of a media center theater room...anyway I'm with you on the JBL Premium system. It sucks. I wonder if better speakers by themselves might make some improvement... Our older Lexus has the Mark Levinson system in it which is pretty good so this the Tundra is a big disappointment.

Not sure. It still sounds like an open power wire unless your battery is going bad. Go have it tested to see if its the battery or it just getting drained by something
