Assembled Bilstein 6112s - great all around buy for the leveler in us all?

    Hey fellas,

Just continuing to clutter the suspension forum with my thoughts. Are the 6112s, assembled, the best all around buy for someone looking to level, fit bigger tires, and cruise the malls in style?

Hear me out. 5100s look fine, but are a bitch to install, else $$$ to get someone to do it. Nearly all reviews state it firms up the ride, some for the better, some worse. At the end of the day, they are just a cheap strut thats raising the truck a bit.

New Toytec/Bilstein non-adjustable 3in coils for around $450 are great for a 3/1in lift, but then you are locked into also having to do the rear, and likely the UCAs for alignment.

6112s, assembled, can be had for $700 to your door, provide 1.9in lift at next to highest setting (TRD Pro stance), and can be installed in the driveway with a few tools and a few hours. At 2in of lift, you get level, likely don't even need to diff drop, and can get in alignment without UCAs. Plus, they are a beastly setup at 60mm body. Worst case you want to go bigger later, you could shim the front, or take them off and adjust to next clip for 2.5in lift.

Seems like a no brainer for me now. I think I've finally settled on a suspension mod. Done rambling!

***Edit - images of the 6112's installed. 1.9in setting (one clip from top)***

    Sounds legit.

I was hoping toytec would announce some numbers on the lowest setting of their new toytec/eibach coilovers soon since that would be doing about the same thing at a bit lower cost than the 6112's.

Been harassing them about it since I first saw the thing and heard it had different settings even though it is marketed as a 3 inch non adjustable. Rumor has it the lowest setting is around the 2" mark but haven't been able to confirm.

Even then, the Eibach option is still the lesser of the two. Literally, costs less, but is also a lower quality setup. If they would sell the Eibach assembled at a 2in lift, it would kind of fill the gap for sure. Then you have from bottom to top - spacer, 5100, Toytec/Eibach, 6112/BOSS/ICON. From my reading and questions, I think the 6112s ride and build quality is great, they are just non-adjustable without taking them off which is when the Toytec BOSS and ICON setups start to shine.

My ratings relative of course, I'm talking about in the peasant world where we just want level trucks to look cool and maybe feel better on unmaintained gravel roads ;)

From the perspective of a budget lifter, my gripe with a 3in non adjustable setup isn't the looks - its the snowball effect that comes with it. In my mind, 3in the front is like tier 2 suspension mods. Instead of direct swap and a trip to any ol' alignment shop, you get into the whole shebang - lift rear, diff drop, off road specific shops for alignment, bad alignment, UCAs, big tires so you don't look like a Richard, etc. Not that its impossible stuff, its just extra hassle for someone who drives down paved roads every day.

They're not hard to assemble just rent a spring compressor if don't have one. I've got 6112s on 3rd setting. I like the setup. They don't ride plush but the truck feels alot more controlled. It's a good setup. 16k on them with no problems.

I like the stance of yours. What's your setup if you don't mind me asking? Obviously 6112 up front. What's in the rear?

Thanks, The rear I've got 5160s with 1.5 inch lift shackles and airbags. I had some pretty bad sag on 3rd setting due to all the gear I carry with me and my worn leafs. So I had to lift the rear. I maintained some slight rake but it goes away as soon as I hook up a trailer. I've got a slight sag on the drivers side a shim would fix that. I wanted to avoid touching the Uca hence why I'm not higher.
My tires are 275/70r18 bfg ko2s on stock trd offorad wheels. I still consider going higher but then I remember I need to keep the truck reasonable.

Yeah, I'm with you on keeping it reasonable. That height is good. My truck came with 20" rims, so I'm running on 285/55R-20 BFG KO2's. Wondering how it would look if I raised it up 2-3 inches or just wait until I need new tires and then do the lift and bigger tires? I was considering the Deaver springs in the back with the 5160's.

I seem to keep reading different opinions on those. You say they don't ride plush but how is the ride compared to the factory Blistien 4600's? Smoother, rougher, etc.?

    Thanks

Just when I thought the 5100's were the way to go. :annoyed::boom:

Well, since this is down the road for me, I have time to figure it out, read opinions, etc.

What size tires can you fit with this setup with let's say the icon six speed 17 inch wheel?

Went ahead and ordered them, assembled to 1.9inches... I don't want to mess with the UCAs, or even risk it.

Will post a pic once installed!

I'd really like to hear how the ride is compared to the TRD-OR suspension once installed? Some say they ride better but some people like a rougher, more "truck" like ride so I'm never really sure what "better" means?

Sure, I'll post up my thoughts. Although, my review will likely be from 100% pavement riding :)

One of my first mods was the 6112s at 1.9". Install was easy and I could do it right in my driveway. On the alignment mine only took a slight toe adjustment. Kind of wish I had gone with the top setting but truck is level and I tow a 5000 lb boat that probably has a tongue weight of 500. Not the best pic because of the angle. Pic in profile is before the 6112s. Ride is fine. I did not have the stockers long enough to compare.

What makes you want the top setting? I'm not too late to change!

Part of my reasoning is alignment, but I also hesrd some like doing 1.9 then adding a .5in shim, so the spring isn't compressed as much.

Just the way the truck looks and pics of others set at 2.5". Plus the fact that if i want to go 2.5 I will have remove and get a spring compressor. If I did not like the rake at 2.5 I could easily raise the rear. Now that I have them installed I think just a 1/2" spacer would be best.

I would wait for tires till yours are toasted unless you really want to go for it. I burn through a set of tires every year so I don't have to wait as long as most people. I waited till I hit near 100k to do my lift. I did my first set of ko2s at 54k. Then my second around 102k. From what I've read here the deavers are softer. But if you don't haul much it might be a good option for you.
If I didn't drive my truck as much as I do and tow as much as I do I would of done a way bigger lift and tires. But it's already a pita to reach to the middle of my tool box or the middle of the bed for something.

Pretty sure this thread just convinced me, I'm going 6112's at 1.9" and 5100s in the rear. Been back and forth for a long time on how to balance practicality and aggressive stance and this seems like the ticket. Thanks all!

I have a 3/2 level. I added the 2inch coach shackels. Whats a good shock to improve smoothness and not mess with height?

I think so. I'm also going to add 5100s to the rear. My wife, unsolicited, said "the truck feels firmer but smoother" now, which is a good way to describe the 6112 ride. They are a little less forgiving in parking lot bumps, but much smoother in the overall ride, especially at highway speed. My rear feels softer than the front now, going to add 5100 soon!
