I have done some research into gear oils, particularly on the "75W" requirement for the transfer case. I am about to acquire my third Tundra, a 2017 4WD. On my previous Tundras, a 2006 and a 2011, I used Amsoil 75W-90 in all three gear compartments (front and rear diff, as well as transfer case). The 2011 actually spec'd a 75W-85 in the rear diff, but I checked with Amsoil - they still recommend their 75W-90. Redline makes a 75W-85, so naturally they recommend it for the rear diff.

When I saw the 75W requirement for the transfer case in the 2017, I had some concerns about simply using 75W-90 as I have been before. This requirement became effective with the 2014 model year, the year Toyota did a "refresh" on the Tundra. Prior to that, the recommendation was for 75W-90.

I contacted BOTH Amsoil and Redline for their recommendation for a 75W transfer case oil. Both have NO recommendation for this compartment. Amsoil still recommends their 75W-90, stating it will offer a bit more protection than a 75W-85. I actually spoke to Redline's technical support line. They stated the reason they have no recommendation for the transfer case is that Toyota has not released the specifications for this 75W oil. He also stated that transfer cases have been known to have parts in them that require very specific frictional characteristics of its lubricant. Since they (Redline) doesn't know what those characteristics might be, they cannot formulate an oil, or determine if an existing product they have would be suitable. I suspect this is the case with Amsoil as well.

I also checked the viscosity ratings. Take a look at the following chart:
    Automotive20Gear20Lubricant20Viscosity20_d986ca764b07a4071b55adc8a57681e7673bfde4.jpg
As you can see, the minimum viscosity of a 75W at 100 degrees Centigrade (Operating temperature, or perhaps a bit above) is only 4.1 cSt. But the minimum viscosity of a 90 weight oil at the same temperature is 13.5 cSt.

This means if you put a 75W-90 in your transfer case, its viscosity will be over 3 times as thick as what is recommended. And we still do not know whether a regular 75W-90 gear oil has the proper frictional characteristics, as the person at Redline pointed out.

Now, here is an image of the product Toyota recommends for the Transfer Case:
    Toyota_75W_zpsrmkmuos9_30ca0838a5fd969f46b026ec4c70be4b3f8aa09a.jpg
Note that the image states the product is specifically for the Transfer Case - not for manual transmissions or differentials, but for transfer cases. It is also VERY expensive - the cheapest I have heard for this product is over $31 per quart. So this could be a very special oil - it is certainly much thinner than regular 75W-90 at operating temperature.

Now, here is my SPECULATION: I doubt the design of the transfer case changed in the 2014 model year and beyond. I suspect they reduced the viscosity to improve and/or maintain the Tundra's miles per gallon rating. Thus I suspect, but cannot prove (or find an authoritative statement from Toyota) that 75W-90 is OK for the transfer case. So, put 75W-90 in the transfer case at your own risk. I have heard anecdotal comments on this and other forums that dealers are still using 75W-90.

As for me, I still haven't decided what to use. I like to change fluids earlier on new vehicles. I will be taking delivery of my 2017 Tundra in early March (it's on order) so I have about 6-8 weeks to make up my mind.

What are others using in their transfer cases in their 2014 and newer Tundras? Have you experienced any issues using 75W-90?

I am at 30k. I just changed out the rear diff and need to do the T-case and front diff. I was planning to uses 75W-90 but obviously some more research is needed.
I did add a 3.8ish quart drain and fill for the trans at 30k. The fluid looked pretty good coming out but I like knowing :)

After digging further, I have discovered that the supplier for the transfer case in the 4WD Tundra, beginning with the 2014 model year, changed from a Japanese supplier to Borg-Warner. So, this means the change in the required lubricant coincided with the change in the supplier of the transfer case. Here is where I found this information:

I am pretty sure if you take it in for service Toyota replaces with you 75W-90. Might want to call a dealership to ask.

My dealer told me that is what they use. So it would be good to know if that is an OK thing or does the special oil have an additive for the special clutch?

According the the article posted above:
"BorgWarner’s transfer case uses an electromagnetic-based synchronization system to synchronize the front and rear axle speeds before locking them together. Unlike conventional mechanical synchronization systems, BorgWarner’s electromagnetic-based system provides a smooth, quiet and consistent transition from two-wheel to four-wheel drive,” according to a BorgWarner press release."

I am betting that the synchronization system has a clutch pack of sorts incorporated.

I would love to know how it works.

Ah, thank you very much. I have a pre-14, so my reading didn't quite extend to that article.

yep bank account is running low from it..
Borg Warner is used by euro cars mainly. ( I think Ford uses them too in transfer case I believe don't hold me to that or they changed suppliers again)

Very useful information (regarding the clutch). This implies to me that frictional characteristics ARE important, which further implies the proper fluid is important. For people that actually installed 75W-90, I wonder how often they use 4WD. If 75W-90 is problematic, the issue would show up during attempted engagement of the 4WD. I further suspect the problem would tend to manifest itself most in very cold weather, since 75W-90 is so much thicker. Engagement of 4WD during very cold weather is a time when people engage 4WD - when there is snow and ice on the road.

But it will only manifest itself if you are engaging 4WD while one axle is spinning faster than the other. I suspect that most of us will never see this because for the most part we don't throw it in 4WD while spinning. Most of us will let off the gas first.

I am on the quest for a suitable alternative to the $60 per quart fluid.

    All,

For those that are curious, I just posted a Virgin/Unused oil analysis of this 75W Transfer Case Oil. There is no doubt, this additive package is VERY different from every normal 75W-90 Gear Lube I have seen. I have committed to using only this OEM fluid in my 2017 Tundra. See the analysis and subsequent discussion here.

Wow great information here!! Thank you for sharing. I will be doing my differential oils as well as transfer case soon at 15k. I will definitely be looking into the OEM Toyota brand now. I would have just bought the synthetic 75w on the shelf... I'm curious what other people have used in their 14+?

Just going to add this for others reading this thread.
I changed all my differentials with the same Mobile 1 75w-90 gear oil at 15k miles. Stock oil came out pretty clean but the drain plug magnets were pretty dirty.
Also used the same Mobile 1 75w-90 for my Transfer case. I’ve driven offroad a few times (using4wd) and put 5k since the oil change and truck still switches into 4x4 perfectly normal. I personally could not find this fancy expensive Toyota gear oil (neither could any local dealers) so I opted to try the normal stuff and have no issues. Going to change all my differentials every 15-30k

Research from a other forum, "I" is not myself.

"Has anyone used RAVENOL J1C1003 SAE 75W Manual Transmission Fluid - MTF-3 Full Synthetic in place of the OEM 75W transfer case oil #08885-81080 ? The Ravenol is supposed to be the equivalent to Toyota 08885-81081, which is supposedly the same as 08885-81080, but packaged for Euro/Asian markets according to some Tacoma and 4Runner forums. The Ravenol is $15 on Amazon, as opposed to $55 for the Toyota fluid. Amazon reviews claim it is an exact match for 2014+ Tundra transfer case fluid.

Apparently there are a couple postings in Russian forums showing that 08885-81081 is actually a can of 08885-81080 with a new label slapped on for Toyota Motor Europe.

The Ravenol application guide on their website recommends their SAE 75W Manual Transmission Fluid - MTF-3 for 2014+ 5.7L (3UR-FBE) transfer case. Oil Guide - Ravenol"

"I spoke to a rep at Ravenol America and he said 08885-81080 and 08885-81081 are the same fluid. Therefore, the Ravenol should be a suitable substitute for 08885-81080. Obviously all I have to go off of is his word. But the Toyota manual seems less adamant about using the OEM fluid in the transfer case as opposed to the transmission. I purchased a couple quarts and will give it a shot soon"

That was my post on the other forum. I've had the Ravenol in for a week now. The OEM fluid I replaced was a bit low and filthy. Transfer case has been performing as expected for the last week. Prior to changing, it would sometimes take awhile for the vehicle to shift in and out of 4HI while driving. Seems to be much quicker now.

Borg Warner makes the velvet drive in my ski boat. It was built in 1993 using that tech and it is still as smooth as any brand new transmission. It uses 10wt tractor oil and switching to the new dextron 3 recommended by the dealer caused it to shift rough.

I went back to 10wt and she's butter smooth again.

Borg loves single weights in their designs, and they love weird oil weights. My experience tells me to use what they recommend for smooth operation.

The brand didn't matter, but like I had many options for 10wt tractor oil not from tractor supply...and not in a 5 gallon pail...

Thanks to Borg for a reliable trans (ridiculously reliable) and thanks to the internet for taking my money to buy single quarts of weird weight oil.

Hello, I have purchased the Ravenol 75wt as mentioned above. I will send it off for a virgin oil analysis. Please anybody speak up if it has already been done to compare to btanchors virgin sample. Thanks

For me, not a great thing that Toyota went this route on T-cases. Making the wheel a square is not helping forward movement.

Just flipped through the owners manual of my new Taco and saw it uses the same goofy oil weight for it's transfer case. Sonofabitch.

It looks like Ravenol has a fluid recommendation for the Tcase on their vehicle search.

We all should pool in a few dollers and have some of these oddball fluids tested. Maybe Roman has the resources and could get the fluids tested.
