DOUBLE CAB TO CREWMAX (REGRETS?)

Hi guys, I have a 14 Double Cab and I’m going to trade her in. Was thinking about a Tacoma because I kinda always wanted one but feels a bit small and way underpowered. So just curious if there is any of you that have gone from a Double Cab to a CrewMax and regret it. There are times I use the box to its max but thought I could drop the tailgate if need be. Just wish they would offer a CrewMax with a 6-1/2 box.

 

The reclining rear window makes up for a lot.

 

I do use the truck a lot. I’m in construction (drywall,framing,T-bar) but most of my material is delivered. It’s just my dailey driver, I do use the box quite a bit but think if need be I could just drop the gate down. I use it for mostly running errands and delivering misc things, couple of bundles of studs or some T-bar or some baker scaffolds. Any amount of drywall that I have to pick up I use my 16 GMC HD with an enclosed trailer. I swore I would never get anything smaller than a 6-1/2 box but my kids are teenagers now and sometimes my wife takes one of my trucks with the kids and goes camping. Thought I couldn’t justify haveing 2 full size trucks but really don’t think I could get by with replacing one with a Tacoma. The CrewMax is huge!

 

None here, went from 15’ DC to a 17’ CM for more car seat room. Interior space, rear window and larger fuel tank have been great upgrades.

 

In the winter almost every weekend 1-3 of my kids and myself go on a 4-4 1/2 hr trip to the mountains to do some boarding. I’m the summer my youngest son and I have our dirt bikes in the back. With my 14 dbl Cab I have a RollnLock so the gate is down with the bikes so that wouldn’t change with the crewmax.

 

Had a new 2010 Tundra 5.7 DC traded it after 6 years and got a 2016 Tacoma then I felt like a sardine in a can with mice under the engine and missed my Tundra!

Months later I traded for my 2017 Tundra 4X4 CM and never looked back, I too used my DC for heavy work from Bed full of dirt, sand, rock, all types of lumber.

So to make up for it I got something like this and solved the problem with trips to H/D!

Trust me once you go CM you'll never look back, my family still are at awe of all the room inside the cab!

I forgot about those extenders, thanks! I’m leaning towards crewmax, more space, more options. DC looks better but the inside is way nicer with the CM. Worse come to worse the I can always trade her in. Also glad to hear some feedback about downsizing to a Tacoma only to go back.

I have PLENTY of room in my DC......and a 6.5 foot bed

Yes there is a decent amount of room with the DC and a 6.5 bed. I know this because I have a 14.

 

That’s huge! I had a dually with a 8’bed and it’s awesome but I beat it up too much because of the size of the bed. Guys don’t care when loading/unloading material,,,, “Oh sorry man” which is why smaller boxes are nice because it forces you to use trailers more.

 

I have found that in most cases if it won't fit in CM bed it probably won't fit in the DC bed either. Either way you leave the tailgate down and use straps or you put the tailgate up and have it angled upwards over the tailgate itself(long pieces of wood etc) and use straps horizontally to keep it in the bed. If professional drywall and framing guys from other countries can get all that material to a job site in a 1989 Tacoma or something similar (even minivans fit drywall and plywood) then you can figure out a way in your CM. All while still providing ample room for more biznitches.

 

I'm confused. You have a double cab Tundra, and you are asking if you should trade it in on either an overall smaller Tacoma, or another Tundra with more cab space and less bed space. The Tundra you have now fits right in the middle of those two options.

Originally I was going to buy it out as it’s a lease and I’m way over the Km’s. I have a 155000kms on her and my lease was for 80 or 88000. Misc dings on her plus a windshield that is full of cracks. If I get a new truck then the km’s are a wash & I don’t pay for them. I have another truck as well, a 16 GMC 3500 SRW HD Duramax that I use for my trailers. Which is why I was thinking about a Tacoma, a smaller truck for all my running around, dirt biking, snow board trips etc. But after taking one out and sitting in one at the dealership, it’s too small & also gutless compared to what I’m use to. So I am now convinced another Tundra fits my needs better. So I was just curious if there were any Tundra owners that have gone from a DC to CM and have any regrets.
