Sway bar install question

I just purchased a TRD sway bar and was thinking about doing the install pretty soon. I have seen several posts talking about the installation and was looking for some opinions. I know the recommended installation is with the brackets on the bottom of the axle, but I have seen some that were installed on the top of the axle as well. I have also been told that you can mount it to the back of the axle 90° from the typical position.

It seems like the factory installation would be the most effective set up, but it does hang lower and limit your clearance. I know the sway bar is not great for off-road anyways so that may be a moot point. Any input is greatly appreciated.

 

This has been discussed in other relative threads, dig around some.

 

Think some members have found an easy way to remove it when going offroad. Seems like that would be your best option.

 

Looks good! I had read they function the same regardless of mounting location, but I have also heard that changing the location changes the angles and reduces the effectiveness. Thanks for the input and pics!

 

The angle of the dangle depends on how much you've lifted the rear of your truck. Here's mine with OME/Dakars and CB+1:

 

Mine is stock in the rear, it is leveled in the front.

 

I like jberry setup. Mine installed the way Toyota has it but it does hang a bit lower than jberry setup

You want to have the end links positioned as close to vertical as possible.

 

isn't your spare supposed to be the other way to gain a bit more clearance ? just wondering. Mine is positioned the same way the poster above you.

 

Is the consensus that you can mount the sway bar up 90 degrees, on the rear of the axle, as to not lose ground clearance?

 

It's above the scrub line, so it's good to go.

Well after putting way too much thought into this, I decided to do the install today. I began the process thinking I would mount it to the rear of the axle, but I did have a change of heart halfway through. My thinking was the engineers at Toyota know a lot more about this stuff than I do... Though I did lose a very small amount of clearance, I do like the idea of having the end links close to vertical. At the very least, it can’t hurt! I could see it being beneficial to mount it to the back of the axle if you have a lift.

Looks great, mine is arriving this Tuesday, and couldn’t decide in which way i wanted to install it, after reading your post im going to install it per instructions.

 

1. Bottom of axle = standard installation location.
   
2. Top of axle = when would you do this, and why?
   
3. Rear of axle = installation location when the rear is lowered.

 

Mine is stock, so your saying #3 is ok to install. Thanks

one of the best mods I did. I had a flat on a loaded dump trailer and this literally helped me stay on the road in time to pull over and change the flat....so glad I added this to my tundra
