oil gauge fluctuate

    I recently had an oil change at a local Toyota dealership and to make a long story short they forgot to install the gasket to the filter. After several miles driving i had a huge oil leak which caused my engine to knock. The dealership had it towed in and said no damaged was done however they wanted to do another oil change after a 100 miles. When the change was done they found shavings in the oil but not the filter, it was taken back after another 100 mile and i was told no shavings was found in the oil or filter. Now my oil gauge fluctuates from a little less than half to 3/4 and the knocking sound is gone. Is it normal for my gauge to fluctuate? Should i be concerned with this? Will damage occur in the near future due to this problem?

    First off...the gasket is attached to the filter and it's not removable. Pretty sure they are full of shit and never snugged the filter. Losing all the oil in 100 miles is indicative of a massive fucking leak.
    Second of all, shavings in the metal like you are describing is not normal.
    Third, rod knock, even for a minute, is detrimental. There is no way to tell that the rods, sleeves, seals, etc are fine without tearing down and inspecting. Just because there is no new shavings with your new oil change doesn't mean jack shit.
    Fourth, oil pressure fluctuation is normal as has already been pointed out.

    Your dealer to your engine has effectively been the equivalent of a mother snorting massive amounts of meth while pregnant.

    Pretty sure he's talking about the o ring type gasket that goes around the plastic filter housing. When you buy a new filter it comes with two new gaskets. One for the OD of the filter housing and a smaller one for the drain plug on the housing.

    Exactly why I'm not taking Toyota up on their free maintenance. I'll do it myself and know it's done right. Wish I had some one like @LOTSOFTOYS to work on my truck when I took it to the dealer. Seems he really enjoys working on tundras.

    You don't have to be afraid of the dealer? In all reality the best technicians to work on Toyotas are at the dealer. Who else works on more Toyotas and knows them better?

    I completely understand and any major work I can't do myself, it will go to the dealer. I just know usually the ones doing oil changes are the younger guys that are forgetful or don't really care about someone else's vehicle.
