I’ve had two. Both 2018 Outback Tourings. What’s up?

Did you like them? I was looking at the newer generation '20-'25.
What kind of gas mileage were you getting?
Any trouble? I know they a have a huge following.

I don't like to advertise myself as a Subaru Technician (because I don't like to work when I'm not working) but I'll tell you what issues / concerns we see a lot of out of these...

Audio unit / Bluetooth / CarPlay connectivity (Reprogramming files available)
Chain Slip, Judder, Shudder, & Hesitation Concerns (CVT)
Seat Ventilation Blower Unit (If applicable)
Air Conditioning Performance (because 1234YF sucks)
Power Rear Gate Malfunctions (There's a reprogramming TSB available)
Front Door Window Regulator Failure (2020 only, design change in 21)
900 series batteries / Auto Stop/Start 650CCA 84-amp hours (They eat a lot of batteries)
The 2.4 Turbos have an issue with carbon build up if you use inferior fuels. The Manual says you can use 87, but you really should use 93.
DTC P2682 & P26Ax** / Thermo Control Valve (we replace A LOT of these. Good money makers. Design change in 2024)

Other than that, they're pretty stout vehicles. I like the 2.4 Turbo over the 2.5. I think the lumbar portion of the seat back is uncomfortable. I personally like the Ascents better, but that's just my opinion. They are obviously the best selling Subaru of all time for good reason.

Can't get a better report than that, thank you!

What's the cost to replace the thermo control valve?

No clue. That's for service advisors to worry about. The TSB for the currently warranty extension is for an additional 114 months and 114k miles from the 3/36 new car warranty. Basically, it's covered for a total of 12.5 years or 150k miles (whichever comes first)

I have had a few. Don’t expect Toyota reliability from a Subaru. If you don’t go into it expecting Toyota reliability you’ll be fine.

Yeah, they’re good little wagons when you want a car but don’t want to be sitting on the ground. They can get you to MTB trailheads with ease if you’re into that sort of things. The first one was my daily and the second one is currently my other half’s daily driver. For the first one, I hated the eyesight when I lived in Phoenix because it tried to throw me into a concrete barrier a time or two. It did not like the road construction there. Ended up trading it for my inferno tundra. We’ve tried the new WRX, Crosstreks, Imprezas and Foresters as well in recent years. The Outback has the least amount of road noise. The Impreza and crosstreks are ridiculously loud but cheap so it’s to be expected. We noticed a difference between the 2018 and 2024 seats in the Outback. Made it an easy choice to buy the 2018. Plus the new ones are insanely priced, while used ones are affordable. One quick sit in the newer one and we were like “NOPE”. Ended up buying another used touring that day. Everyone is different but we are very particular. My other half is completely deaf in one ear and I’m hard of hearing in one ear so a quiet cabin was at the top of the list. The brown leather and low profile roof rack bars are the top features of the touring for us. Haven’t had any eyesight issues with this one. First 2018 radio shit the bed, had to get it replaced, it was only temporary and replaced under warranty. It was the only issue we’ve had with Subaru. Get a Fumoto valve if you do your own maintenance.

Here’s our real world MPGs at 5900’ of elevation with regular trips down to 3000’-ish and back.

    Awesome, thank you!

If I go this route, it'll be my daily driver. About 100 miles per day. So, gas mileage, comfort, and reliability will be high priority. The elevation will be very similar to what you were doing.

@BillyB You do realize that if you go through with this, we will have to revoke your man card.

Haha, the Tundra isn't going anywhere. Does that make a difference?

    It helps. A little.

If you're going to do this, with the daily mileage you are planning to drive, I'd look into something like a PHEV Rav4.

Yeah, I've been looking at everything. A little. Won't be a brand new vehicle. But not too used.
