Dang, seems to be very tire dependent. What size would you go with if you did it again today?

I'm also somewhat considering upgrading to bilstein 5100s because I'm still on the old stock bilsteins. A little rub might help motivate me to action.

Weird, I've got Cooper Discover AT3 LTs in 265/75/R16 and never had any rub at all, in fact I keep thinking about going bigger because they're not even close to my fenders/mud flaps. I have to park in a really small parking garage pretty regularly and that always involves having the steering at full lock. Maybe dependent on how the front alignment was setup?

 

I didn't realize there was plastic in there. Have you tried spraying the mechanism with WD-40 or something similar already?

 

90% of the time i run little 215/85-16 E load tires. That’s a great size for cutting (more like crashing) cross country through the middle of the woods where there are no roads or trails. Backed up with 4.10 gears and it does fantastic both on the highway, towing, and offroad. Now if i lived in an apartment complex, drove on easy gravel roads, or got my coffee at starbucks, then i’d definitely require a larger tire and a lift kit. My truck plays double duty as a work truck, so i don’t want a bed that high up in the air since i have to reach into the bed. Nor do i want to hop up to get into the cab. FYI, i have a jeep CJ7 with 37” Boggers on it, so i’m not opposed to oversized tires. But for me i keep my CJ lifted and keep every thing else flying under the radar at stock high with stock sized tires.

 

Alignment might be the culprit. I take my truck off road, so my tire might get stuffed into the wheel well further.

Also there’s no set spec on just how tall a 31” tire actually is. One manufacturer might build theirs at 29.5” tall, while another at 31.5”.

 

True that on the tire sizes. Also why I want to go narrower if I go bigger.
Mine mainly just sees forestry roads and somehow I’m really good at finding every dirt road that’s washboarded.
This is how far forward mine sit. Slightly compressed because half on the curb.

 

I've been running LT265/75R16 tires on both my 2004 and 2006 RCLB and they never rub. They are Les Schwab Open Range all terrain 6 ply tires.
No lift.

I ran 265/75/16s for 20 years. On my first set of 285/75/16s. Not going back.

 

As soon as I can get out and go mountain biking this week I'll take some photos.

 

Getting ready to do some valve cover gaskets for the first time. Is a gasket scraper worth the money or does a pocket knife work just as well? Thanks

 

I’m wondering how necessary replacing those half moon things are for the job. I need to do it myself.

 

I used a razor scraper

Might as well once you are in there. It'll add about 30 more minutes to a job that you know will be done right.

 

I’m not convinced they’ll ever leak only because it’s not a smooth surface the way it fits in like a puzzle piece and oil thrown against it isn’t going to easily migrate its way out. I could be wrong but I’m willing to bet they won’t.


Plus it’s at the back of a the valve cover out of view, so who’s going to see a few drips?
