Goodbye to my 01' DC

New member here but a longtime lurker.

I'd like to start off by thanking everyone for the wealth of information that's been shared on this site. I've been apart of numerous automotive forums over the years but this one ranks among the very best.

I said goodbye to my 2001 Tundra with 320k miles last week but stayed in the family with a very clean 2012 that l couldn't pass up.

It was a bittersweet goodbye. The truck was still in great mechanical condition but developed a few drivetrain leaks (rear & front differential) that I couldn't justify fixing entirely. I managed to "stop" the leaks but ultimately it was time to move on.

I plan to monitor both sides (1st & 2nd gen) to hopefully help others & offer any insight that I've gained. These trucks really are a different breed from the rest & it's easy to see why they have such a great reputation. Keep them alive as long as you can. I certainly miss my 01'!

 

What did you do with it? Sell it, give it to a family member or donate it?

 

Hey Jack, I ended up trading it in for a 2012 Double Cab. Dealer said it'll go to auction. I hope it end ups in a good home!

 

This is similar to my dilemma. My 2006 is going strong, but I'm tempted to get into a 2/2.5 gen DC while they're still out there. I'm afraid if I wait til my FGT finally dies, all that will be available is 3rd Gens.

 

I've got to say, I didn't expect the 2nd gen to be such an upgrade. Mine is very basic with cloth seats, column shifter, etc. But it's extremely spacious & rides great. Night & day difference in terms of isolation & ride quality. It still retains some of that old school feel but with a lot modern conveniences. Good luck on your search, you'll know when it's time.

 

Please offer for sale in the FGT forum first. Dealers give you shit and like will end up in a crusher. Lots of us would rather buy a good FGT than a new truck.

 

I picked up a 2007 5.7L in 2017 and I'm still driving the 2002 4.7L that I bought in 2003, both are great regular cab trucks and I hope I never have to choose one over the other.

I have an SR5 dc with the 4.6, so similar to yours.

I love it, it lumbers a bit compared to my old Colorado, but I am getting used to a nice full-size truck again.

Sometimes we assume folks know the initialization lingo on the forum. I often have to search up things I read here.

 

The 2UZ-FE has been and always will be a 4.7 liter V8.

The best engine ever ever was not offered in the 2019 model year, in which the truck listed on my profile at the top of all of my posts clearly shows.

Not arguing. But you do realize you're posting in the 1st Gen forum, which because I didn't read your profile, just your post, I had to assume you either A: didn't know what the hell you're talking about, or B: it was a typo.

 

Did you realize the op (original poster) said he was new here and sold his best engine evar ever truck and bought a gen 2 truck very similar to mine?

4th gens will be getting old before your 1st gen wears out.

True. Especially since I just passed a whopping 103K miles.

 

I have also thought about getting a 2nd Gen. Largely for the 3,000 pounds more towing capacity but also if I could get the 8 foot bed.

I'd have to come across a really sweat deal though. Our 2006 DC is doing all we are likely to ask of it and if we need anything able to pull really heavy, might get a diesel F350 or FSuperduty then.

 

That was my situation too. My '00 1st gen was going strong w/200K miles and never gave me any trouble... loved that truck and LOVED not having a payment, but I wanted to get me a 5.7 while I could.

1at gen did all I asked it to, but man what a difference!

Especially when towing. 245 HP vs. 381. 315 Ft/lb. vs. 401 is pretty huge.

Hmmm, that's weird. When I read it, I just figured he had an SR5 dc with the 4.6

I’ve never quite understood this “unwritten rule” that only 1st gen owners can post in the 1st gen subforum. I completely get the frustration when someone jumps in with irrelevant, misleading, or flat-out wrong information about our trucks—but that’s not the same as shutting out anyone who doesn’t currently own a 2000–2006 Tundra.

At the end of the day, this is an enthusiast forum. Enthusiasts share knowledge, stories, and experiences across generations. A member doesn’t have to have a 1st gen in their driveway right this second to bring something useful to the conversation. Maybe they owned one in the past, maybe they’re considering buying one, or maybe they’ve just spent too many hours geeking out on Toyota history. All of those voices can add value here.

I’ve chimed in on plenty of threads in other generation subforums and never once got hit with a dramatic “THIS IS TURD GEN!” moment. In fact, I even started a thread in the 3rd gen section and had great conversations with the folks there. The way I see it, all of us—no matter what generation we drive—have something we can offer one another. Knowledge, perspective, or even just a laugh once in a while.

So yeah, I don’t think the gate needs to be as narrow as “own one or stay out.” We’re all here because we love Tundras, and that’s more than enough common ground.

One of the reasons I am driving a Tundra today was my seeing the first generation trucks in my area.

First generation Tundras are the best looking in my opinion, and they got me looking at a Tundra to replace my old truck.

I am glad it happened that way.

 

Another +1 here. Should be crossing 200k on my '06 in the next 4-6 months and no major issues or complaints, other than I still hate drum brakes, still wish it turned better and still wish it packed a bigger towing punch. All of which a nice 5.7L 2nd gen would cross off the list for relatively minimal cost - other than saying goodbye to the truck that is older than my marriage and my child.

Mirrors my thoughts on the matter but I haven't had much coffee yet, so I probably would've said something more like "I had one, and unless admins tell me otherwise Im'ma post wherever the #%@! I want!"

If it helps, though I do miss my '00 and it will always have a place in my heart, I can tell you from experience that bigger more disky brakes, more gears, more room, and GOBS more HP & TQ will help heal that sense of loss pretty quickly.

I think the 1st gen has a more aesthetically pleasing look, and I pestered my father in law for YEARS to sell me his truck.

The 4.7L, 4spd (really only 3 when towing) and fade-tastic brakes did everything I asked of it and never let me down...















It didn't take very long for the performance and room of the '19 5.7 to heal my broken heart.

Night and day difference.

And the towing experience is just so much more relaxing. The 4.7 did it's job completely adequately, and I had no complaints... but it, and sometimes me, was working.
Now it's just kinda' going for a drive... with a little house behind us.







Besides, the AC would've been a little cramped now that we have a 3 dog pack.

 

Oh and I completely forgot to mention my '06 is only 2wd. And while I've only ever "needed" 4wd twice in 15 years, I've wished for it on far more occasions.

Speaking of '19s, my brother has toyed with selling his but he puts tons of miles on vehicles, want to say that one is over 100k already. Not something to necessarily be worried about I don't think, but if upgrading I typically do try to find a lower mileage example. Though his would have the benefit of knowing the history as he's the only owner since new. Maybe I need to drive it and force my own hand.

 

Depending on when it was bought, a 19 could technically be almost 8 years old now.
Doing 20,000 miles a year is childs play for some people and 100,000 miles in 7ish years is nothing really. Sure it may seem high to you but "high" mileage for a 2019 would be more like 180,000-200,000

 

Yep, don't disagree with any of that, just my usual MO is if I'm shopping for a vehicle I'm going to be selective and choose the lesser mile ones 9 times out of 10. But a single owned vehicle in the family might be that 1 out of 10.

 

With Toyota, "High Miles" is a very different number than it is with big 3 for example.

My credit union made an exception to their (unemotional dollars and cents) rule about not loaning money for anything over 100K miles when I was buying a 4Runner w/111K miles from my wife's cousin, specifically because it was a Toyota.

By the time I finally convinced my FIL to sell me his Tundra it had 155K on the clock.

Because I knew him and it's history, I had no qualms whatsoever about the "high miles".

Bud worked in the aircraft industry and loved nothing more than service intervals, log books, maintenance records, etc. He literally handed me not only the STACK of maintenance records from the day he drove it off the lot in 1999, but he had a notebook of EVERY SINGLE tank of gas he put in it from day one. Odometer reading, MPG's, gallons filled, price he paid, etc.
And I had only half-jokingly told my friends that he would.

So yeah, maintenance trumps miles on these - (to a point of course) If you approve of how your brother takes care of it and it wasn't a work truck loaded heavy and beat on it's whole life, 100K on a Toyota is barely broken in.

Friend of mines wife drives all over to these rodeos and women sales where they sell fancy pottery and jewelry ect. She stays in the road a pretty good bit and had a 2017 or 2018 Escalade with 260,000 miles on it. His FB marketplace ad went like this (this was just a few weeks ago)
:Escalade, fully loaded, every option, 260,000 miles, second engine, third trans, needs a trans. $6,500
It was exclusively driven by her, had stock Goodyear tires on it every day of its life, and just ran her all over the south being pretty. Gulf Shores beach one weekend, Dallas the next weekend, Ole Miss football game the next weekend. Thats pretty much what she did all its life.
The moral of the story, it was $76,000 new in 2018 and had around $30,000 (minimum) of maintenance put into it to keep it going. This is not including the front end it likely had replaced, two sets of front wheel bearings, drivers front seat, who knows what sort of electrical gremlins it had after complete disassembly multiple times.
Meanwhile my 2008 4Runner i bought used for $8,000 in 2017 with 100,000 miles now has 265,000 miles on it and i have done absolute nothing to it.
U-joints, brakes, tires, evaporator, spark plugs, PCV valve, a set of shocks, and oil changes. Thats absolutely it. Funny thing is, my 4Runner is now worth around $9,000-$10,000 private party in its condition.
BIG difference in the GM product.
