Deciding on running boards

I had pretty good steps on my rock rails. They were the very first thing that got wrecked on the ricks on my first off road adventure. Those got stripped off and I cut the steps off of them and put them back on. I bought a collapsing step for the wife to be able to get in the cab and told her that she had to either use that or learn how to climb into the cab another way. If she needs steps to get in the truck, then she is in the wrong truck.

 

What rims are those? They are pretty sweet!

 

Vossen HF6-4 22x9.5 with 200mm offset in Terra Bronze. Not going to lie though, they are a bit pricey.

 

A similar look is 4Play 4P83 but -44 offset, lots of poke. I initially ordered those but once I understood the amount of poke I changed it up, glad I did, very happy with the Vossens. The plus side to the 4Plays is $250 less per wheel. I like the openness of the Vossen spokes.

 

Just installed some cheap one from Amazon. They look good and seem like they should hold up good too.

I’ve been happy with my Go Rhinos. Ended up going with D1 extreme to get a little lower step because I have small kids and plans(maybe more like dreams) for more lift. Have had any issues in the dirt and the wife and kids appreciate the ease of getting in and out.

 

I went with the RB 20 slims standard coating and had my local Line-X dealer coat them on both sides including mounting brackets. If I lived in a warmer climate with no snow or ice I probably would have gone with power running boards. I can just see people who have the power running boards freeze up and fail over time in such climates. Who needs those headaches. The Toyota OEM TRD boards are nice but look a little too bulky to me.

 

I'm gonna go with the slims. Now just trying to decide if I want to get them with the bed liner coating or just get them Line-X'd. I'm waiting on some quotes back for getting them done.

 

I heard the bed liner type coating that can be ordered on the Go Rhino running boards is not that great. I also am pretty sure the underside as well as the mounting brackets are not even coated with the bed liner stuff. That's why I just went with their standard coating and had Line-X do it. Line-X charged me $300 CDN which is approximately $222 US.

 

You should consider Westcott sliders.

 

So I’ve just put down a deposit on a ‘25 Platinum TRD OR 6.5’ w/ factory lift and want to get the automatic running boards. In the online configurator, you can’t select the auto running boards with the TRD Or package. I asked my sales guy about them and I think all he did was confirm for me what the configurator already told me.

Can anyone confirm if they can be added after-the-fact? Seems crazy that they couldn’t. TIA!

UPDATE: I found my answer in other threads that the wiring harness for the automatic running boards is NOT installed with the TRD OR package. The dealer quoted me a price of ~ $1,950 to get them installed.

 

I just upgraded to the TRD running boards and they are much more suited for my needs, I also like the look alot better.

 

My truck came with the factory lift and I had purchased the Go Rhino Dominator D6 running boards before picking up the truck. As expected, getting in and out was doable but difficult for me (at 6' tall) and a serious challenge for my wife (5'6"). I installed the running boards the first good weather day after I bought my truck. I LOVE them and they are SOLID. I wanted power running boards, but decided against them because they were significantly more expensive and more difficult to install and I wanted more protection. I have a steep paved driveway at my cabin and snow is not uncommon. Twice I've slid backwards in my '07 Tundra 2wd and hit a large rock in the drainage ditch which scratched and dented my OEM running boards. They certainly protected the truck body and I wanted something similar on this new truck.

 

Do you know if these can serve as rock sliders as well? I got these when I bought my Tundra as well, just curious on the functionality of them working for that...

 

I have some NFAB ones I had on my 2018 Tundra, and I really like the style. i know this is old but figured id post anyways.

I've always removed my running boards.
But then I used to offroad my trucks a lot.
Not so much these days since I'm approaching Geezerhood.

 

No. Those cannot be used as rock sliders. Crawl under your truck and look where they mount. Rock sliders have to be mounted to the frame, and very very securely so.

 

I have the OEM silver tubes. Like the look, but hate the function. They have tucked them so far under they are worthless as a step

 

Can I ask why?

 

I looked at them as well. They seemed very small, not great for a step to actually use. Did like the look, but I wanted a better step. Also have 4 kids so need that

 

Ah.....I thought He was referring to the Truck in general.

 

He might have Been talking about some of the trim camo (some people hate it) but I assumed he meant the TRD predator steps

 

I assumed it was the TRD Aluminum boards. I think they are the only ones that are actually TRD, or are the Predator steps also tagged as TRD officially?

 

I don’t know my dealership had them as TRD predator steps. I’m not sure dealership is probably wrong

Enough room to fit a side of a foot in or ball of foot on.
Haven’t slipped yet.
I wanted something to protect the sides and be low profile. These worked great.
