did I do ok- on 2005 ?

I'm dealing with 2 of the 6 rusted bed bolts. got 4 out no problem. I got issues trying to get tank straps replaced due to rusted bolts/pins. And after buying see one leaf spring is broke. It has the 4.7. runs great. tail pipe is so clean don't even get anything on finger rubbing the inside. i also see the dust shields by brakes looking bit corroded. but- the actual frame looks pretty good. it has 137,000 for miles and just very minor spot of rust by one rear flare- rest body clean. It is a 2005 double cab. I paid $3200 for it. good or bad?

 

If you have the motivation and basic automotive knowledge to do most of your own work, it's definitely a good deal for that price. Throw a few thousand in parts and you'll have a great truck. Even the first gens that are priced $8k and up are usually going to need some mechanical restoration/TLC.

 

Sounds like you did.

 

For $3200 something doesn’t smell right. Is the body beat up or peeling clearcoat? Normally you’d expect the price to be 2-3x more.

No.. body is decent. No clear coat peeling at all. few paint chips and couple scratches from the guys work. 10 footer you don't see. It had a ladder rack on it when I bought it. Bumpers are great. The back seat is gone as he kept tool box there. its a DC so kind of tight seating anyway. I will build a nice platform back there just for hauling whatever. The only issues I'm seeing is one very small bubbling by one rear flair. I guess also one of the bumper extenders fell off ( plastic). then.. gas tank straps are bad ( got 2 new in shop waiting to get old off)- Also one broke leaf spring. No dash lights on. I bought it due to I thought 137,000 miles seem decent for that year Tundra. To be honest I wasn't a Toyota guy..maybe now though..lol. Had a new Toyota Celica in 1983 ( yes im old) and loved the 22R engine though. I wanted a 2000- 2005 3/4 chevy when started looking for a truck but..this popped up here on Marketplace

 

Did you look at the Toyota service history and the mileage for that service? Is anything out of the ordinary? It just seems weird you’d have one sold that cheap to you.

 

Can’t tell you if you did any good without seeing the frame for ourselves. The amount of rusty components you’re reporting is suspicious.

 

my grandson looked it up on carfax but never got back to me. I can't do pics except to messenger to friends on FB. I will try to get my grandson to help me load up on here. He is 22. The basic frame looks pretty good. couple rusted areas on the cross over part. mainly where the front 2 bed bolts go into ( those tube area) it had been undercoated at some point or by someone. lot of it is peeling off now. I did notice the exhaust pipe has a tin wrapped around one spot.. no biggie though when time permits I'll get a sleeve there.

 

Can Toyota tell me anything done to it on their wesite by using vin? I forgot it had a new radiator put in in July of this year. either new or re-cored I think. Has markings of date on it. unless maybe just flushed and painted at a radiator shop.

ya? its the one right nest to the overload spring at bottom of stack. pretty close to u-bolt too. no idea.

The original owner ( as I'm told) sold it to the friend of his.. actually think it was a labor trade off. The guy I got it from only wanted it to use for couple moves. The original owner was in home remodeling or something like that. that is why it had ladder rack on it. I took that off right away. Im betting he overloaded it with shingles thats why leaf broke. hit rr tracks or something. It makes sense it being a work truck so mileage reflects not a lot of Interstate driving or long distances.

 

Exceptional price then. Mine cost $3K, In 2020....but with twice the miles.

 

Congratulations on your new to you Toyota, I’m surprised you haven’t got the shifty welcome and advice on the stickies posts. There’s a lot of information you should read. We’re good sports about help by a big margin in forum land, but certain easily searched questions can bring ire from some. Rusty frames are the tundra/taco killer so that’s first on the is it ok list. Them lower ball joints and on down the list. Pictures post by hitting the upload file button next to post reply. You aren't confusing the access cab with the double cab are you? The access cab seats are big enough for kids only; double cab is four complete doors for full size adults sitting in back. Either way, it's still a phenomenal price for a 2005 Tundra 4x4 v8.

 

All I know is this: the two smaller doors in back can't open unless you open the front door. then they swing open apposite direction. The back doors have no handles either. Did Toyota call it extended cab?

 

That would be an access cab, and they should have handles on the inside and outside, just can't open the doors unless the front doors are open.

Well.. As mentioned. It is a access cab. the main door and the smaller door behind it that swings open the opposite direction than front door. But was mentioned the back doors should have outer handles too besides insides? They do not have outer handles.. only just open if the front door is open. I drilled a hole in the tube that the front bed bolts go down through so I could get PB blaster into the tubes to soak the bolt threads. will leave a couple days then retry the air impact to break loose. Im thinking to risky to heat those tube up esspecually the one by the tank. I may get tank out then use heat.I got the compressor set at 140 lbs. I want the bed off regardless so can access the rust better and get at stuff.

We would need a photo or photos to understand better what you mean about the handles. Possibly someone customized? Hard to imagine that but you have us curious.

With your mechanical skills I’m baffled by the inability to upload photos. There are zero teenagers in your orbit to help?

 

I'm a 72+ yo widow. My grandson who is 22 got married in March and since they have their own place.He works a lot. I'm in the country so no teens in area.. He will do it for me when he gets time. I already asked him. He would have done it tomorrow but I'm out of town this weekend. BUT.. My big mistake! I'm old so be easy on me.. I just looked out at the truck and I will be- it DOES have handles on the back doors! I was going on memory which obviously has faded. I've only had this truck 2 weeks.

There are handles, but still have to open the front door to use the handles to open the back door

 

Maybe use an inductive heater to localize heat? That's if you can fit the heater openly over the bottom of the bolt/tube where the threads are located.
