    UPDATE:
I Passed on the purchase because of the smoke even though it was an excellent deal.

    Thanks for the help fellas!!
Looking at a used Tundra and the previous owner was smoker. I can’t stand cigarette smoke.

Have bought it yet...is it doable??

    1. What is my success rate in removing smell?

    2. If you were successful what worked and what didn’t.

    3. Anyone unable to remove the smell

Thanks for your thoughts and help

detailing shops can get it out . Vacuum/shampoo the whole inside then they used some kind of ionizer smell removal.

Can full of charcoal and a bunch of dryer sheets after a good cleaning and carpet shampoo should work.

A portable air purifier or air scrubber will take out the smell. Not a cheap fix but it works

I used to use Febreze spray for work cars I had to share, it seemed to work OK. I used it for cigarette smoke and the dude's cheap cologne, either one was bad but the combo was horrible. It would give me a headache. The Febreze seemed to work OK, but it wasn't my own car so I would have to spray it over after unfortunately having to get in that car after him again and again. Couldn't really say if it makes it go away for good as that was a weird circumstance....

My old Tacoma had been smoked in. It was pretty strong.
I cleaned the seats, floor, plastics, and headliners as best as I could. Loaded up with odor absorbing fresheners, and fabrezed the crap out of it.

I thought it was gone but I think I just got used to it because my passengers always said they still smelled it. Also anytime it was hot you could smell it.

Without replacing everything inside the car I'd say your chances of eliminating it are slim to none.

I made a ozone generator out of an ammo box. My buddy bought a mustang that had been smoked in a looooong time. he shampooed it a few times, pulled the head liner etc/ Finally we were talking about it and put the ozone machine in there. After all that, he said that it did the trick. You can over do the ozone, so short sessions and a big air out. Ozone is bad for you and bad for plastics.

I have used the can of charcoal briquette method several times. has always worked for me without having to pay someone to remove the odor.

Better be a sweeeeeeet friggin deal. I've been in a lot of cars that used to be smoked in. The owners think it's gone... it's not.

I'd be damned impressed if it ever actually worked.

I was in the same boat as you when I bought my tundra.

ZEP makes an odor remover spray (didn't work that well)
Bring it to the dealership or to someone that has one of those ozone machines.

What helped me was Mequire's spray. It's a tiny can that you put on the console, start truck with recirculated air on full blast and lock spray cap on "spray" and let sit. Did that about 3 times over a few months and it was gone.

Or ask the owner if you can try a can, worst case they say no or it doesn't work and you're out $10.

    Everything. Literally.
Last truck I had was owned by a smoker before I bought it. Shampooed the shit out of the seats and carpets, pulled the vents and sprayed ionizing air freshener into the ducts, and changed the cabin filters. Didn’t smell anymore.

I'm a smoker, I smoke in My platinum Tundra all the time. Get something with leather, it doesn't hold the smell. I have had my truck over a year(27,xxx miles). Passengers are always surprised to hear that I smoke in it.

Any clothe interior will hold odors. Smoke, BO, fast food, old food.

Biggest key is to always crack one window and occasionally just let the truck sit with windows wide open. I like the full rear slider because you can really air the truck out. Much better than just side windows. I also practice odor control with Febreeze and dryer sheets.

I bought a Scion xB that'd been smoked in. I too can't stand the smell of cig cmoke but it was a good deal so i jumped on it anyways. I shampoo'd the hell out of it, scrubbed down all the plastic and re-did the headliner and it went a away within a month or so.

also if i had to do it now I'd get one of those odor bombs that you run with the AC on overnight. they're supposed to work really well.

If you leave it long enough, a large amount of that stank will dissipate.

I vote along with this guy. If you're not super sensitive to cigarette smoke, there's some great options listed, that'd maybe satisfy you. But if you live somewhere it gets really hot, you'll get back in on a scorcher day, and the smell will be back. I'm allergic so I wouldn't do it.

Well I'm not convinced it's totally removable but you can get to a point where it's not as bothersome. My last truck I had for 10years and when it would get hot inside you could still smell it. I have a chair thats been in a smoke free environment for probably 20 year with the same results.

My vote is no. I've been in cars that have gone through the ringer before and it's ever present. Hot and humid day here in Virginia... Smoke cant be hidden, ever.
