How do you Brake Hold

Tundra and F150 with 5.0 have near identical 0-60 times

 

Even if it did work in reverse, I'm wondering how well it would work at the boat ramp. Generally when I'm backing down I don't use the gas pedal at all since gravity is working in my favor. So if I come to a complete stop while in reverse and the brakes stay engaged, I'd have to hit the gas to disengage then be right back on the brake. Might try it next time I'm at the ramp, but doubtful I'd like it even if it does work. I do like the auto parking brake feature at the ramp. Use it every time.

 

I'm thinking when you back down the ramp in reverse, then come to a complete stop, if the brake hold engages in reverse and allows you to shift to drive, all you'd have to do is push the throttle to pull out of the ramp. You wouldn't have that awkward moment where you have to hold the brake while shifting into Drive, then quickly release the brake and get on the throttle. No roll back, or tricky pedal maneuvers.

I usually 2-foot that maneuver, using my left foot on the brake, kinda like slipping a clutch. But if the brake hold works as I hope, it would eliminate that maneuver.

 

I pretty much do the same as you and use the two foot method so could see the advantage to brake hold there. I guess if worry about being the guy who forgets to put the truck in park only to watch his truck gurgling under water. In other words, if I break my 40+ year habits at the launch, will something bad happen? Maybe I worry too much.....

 

oh you guys are talkin about the In n Out button. yup love that button. loved that toyota included a button specifically for In n Out lines. that was mighty thoughtful of them.

 

I see your point, if you are launching solo, and have to get out of your truck.

I'm usually with a buddy. So, one of us is at the helm, and the other is in the truck. We unhook the boat from the trailer before backing down the ramp. My buddy's boat is big and heavy, so it usually requires a little sudden stiff "braking assist" to get it moving off the trailer, if you know what I mean. My little skiff is a breeze to launch. She floats off the trailer before the trailer wheels are fully submerged.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying this feature out the next time I get on the water.

 

Has anyone else ever had clicking with the hold?

There is one loud click under the hood when I hit the gas from a stop. Does it most everytime for past year except at the dealer when I take it in. It all works but semi embarrassing because other stoppers gotta hear it

 

I love it. I only wish I didn’t need to turn it on every time I start the truck.

 

Last year when I had a loaner f-150, which i hated, I cant lie, it was quick as hell for a truck, and it actually hooked. If I dump it to the floor in my Tundra I am just wasting rubber.

Not to mention, if anyone thinks they look cool as they launch it from a light thinking its a race and the other person is oblivious, you just look like a douche.

So, I answered my own question about brake hold working in reverse, today. It doesn't. So, it won't be any help at a boat ramp.

Bummer. Another swing and a miss for Toyota engineers.

 

One other thing I have noted using brake hold is the acceleration is always smooth as butter from a stop, it’s perfect every time with no hesitation. Occasionally I will get a jerky start from stop when not using. I love my truck but have thought from day one that acceleration input from pedal to throttle needs to be fine tuned more

 

Anyone know if there brake lights stay on when the truck is holding itself? I assume they do, like when the radar cruise applies the brakes.

My wife’s explorer has the hold feature and it was a great discovery prior to getting my truck. As others have mentioned, it’s a real bummer that it needs to be turned on every start. The Explorer is a one and done, turned on when we bought it and never thought about it again.

Would absolutely love if someone could replicates the auto start stop bypass for the brake hold. Assuming it would work the same way but I’m not an electrical engineer to confirm lol

 

Almost a full 2 years and never used this. Be using this at the costco gas lines. Unpopular opinion: like there is a on/off button and that it doesn't stay on.

 

2.5 years of not knowing this existed, and started using it this weekend. It's actually pretty nice, I am just forgetting to turn it on each time. As someone previously mentioned, it's really smooth when you accelerate after the brake hold. Nice little feature.

 

Good point. The acceleration coming off a hold is always better. I’m just so used to it I never thought of that.

 

Well I went from 2019 to last week being able to but not knowing how this worked.
I have since helped inform nearly a dozen others; none of us were aware of its function.
I now use it frequently, thank you!

 

What other nifty features are present that many may not be aware???? Like using your remote to open the windows is one I use at the golf course to let the heat out while we unload the carts.

Locking your truck from the tailgate, starting your truck w/o holding the brake pedal, programming your iPhone to lock your truck every night ( or be sure it’s locked) at a certain time.

Nice. That's a new one on me.

I assume the FOB has to be out of the truck to do this? I hope so, because I often leave my FOB in the truck when I'm working around our property. I'd hate to inadvertently hit that button and lock my FOB inside.

You got the secret tailgate button diagram. Starting w/o Brake - On any push button start Toyota, as long as the Fob is inside the vehicle if you just hold the Start button down for 15 secs the vehicle will start w/o the brake pedal depressed.

 

Can you explain the purpose of this? Why would i want to spend 15 extra seconds holding a button to start my truck when I could just hit the break pedal?

 

Wondered the same thing. Maybe he doesn't have any legs?
