What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Been trying to find a 'pop' on turns so might give her some grease too

Started out with just the truck....realized we'd have to come back the next day but wife suggested "I'll work here, you go and get the trailer." Worked great....EXCEPT....wife forgot all about how the client wanted this one tree trimmed.....CUT OFF WAY TOO MUCH.

But....everyone loves my wife....so the client wasn't upset at all. Now had that been me over trimming.....she'd probably have been upset!



Pulled the short trailer to the landfill with Tuesday's tree trimmings.

Hooked up the 2-axle and did two yards. Truck drove fine BUT noticed some low volume "whine" type of noise. It's intermittent.....we kinda think it's an insect of some sort trapped in the backseat area. I'll try to hear it next time I take the Tundra out.

Trailer lights not consistently working. I'll try and trouble shoot that when I get the chance.

12 miles to the gallon on fill up this morning. We've pulled the trailer nearly every time we've driven since the trip to the cookout where we got 19 mpg.

 

If you have oversized A/T tires, make sure you're not grabbing the mud flaps a the pinch welds, or the pinch welds themselves. It may not be obvious at first, but ... it happens.

That’s a sweet setup. The trailer definitely ups the amount of gear you can take with you. Also gives that homebase action so you can adventure without being overloaded with gear. I could have a ton of fun with a setup like that. If this pesky job wasn’t in the way

I was behind a large tow truck that wouldn't move over out of the pass lane which then kicked up a rock while on my Tuesday morning commute. It sounded/felt like a gunshot inside the cab. I talked to an autoglass shop who said it couldn't be repaired, just replaced. The damage is low on the driver side. I don't care if it totally disappears but I am hoping to stop the star from spreading. I decided to try a DIY repair with the Permatex kit. Waiting for it to set now.

 

Yeah, you're not gonna pull enough suction or apply enough pressure to push the adhesive any more than 1/4" past the edges of the suction cup. The only way to stop the actual crack is to either drill or fill the tip of the crack. Just the tip(s).

Sorry about your luck, do you have a dashcam so you can go after the company?

 

Too many long cracks. If it was a simple bullseye that kit would work but those cracks will, at some point, spread. Only fix is replacement, unfortunately.

 

Yep, didn't work. In fact, the longest crack extending towards the passenger side doubled in size. Maybe applying resin to the center of the star will slow the water and dirt intrusion and crack expansion.....probably not .

That's a really good cost on a replacement. Just be careful who you trust on replacing the windshield, and avoid Safelite. Always trust mom & pop shops, ideally with a 4.5+ rating or higher on Yelp and Google reviews.

 

Last weekend I finally got around to installing the first of two aluminum molle panels I bought last year. I also added 3/4 inch rubber spacers.
These molle panels are sold and advertised as mounts for sun visors. I want to mount a radio and maybe a few tools for quick access and I think this will work.

 

Will do. I found a guy after I went through this with my wife's GX a few weeks ago. It's unfortunate that I'll eventually be parting ways with my real Toyota glass.

 

With thanks to @shifty` the Tundra got a new head unit and the back up camera connected. It's nice to have newer tech than the OEM unit and have wireless android auto. I still have the GTA bluetooth kit for anyone that is still rocking the OEM head unit. It'll just cost you shipping.

Also thanks to @Kimosabe I was able to get the new grille and have it installed. It looks great. Kudos to him on the packaging.

I almost opted for the GTA kit but decided to modernize a little bit as well with a carplay HU and master tailgaters camera. Which cam did you go with?

 

I also have the master tailgaters handle. I picked up the metal one with the camera built in

 

I actually meant to take some photos of how we wired up the camera thru the tailgate, and totally spaced on it.

Long story short, in case anyone's interested, the Master Tailgaters backup cam has a white one-off plug and about 18" of cable between that plug and the camera. The wires are pre-sleeved, which is nice. The cable that plugs into that one-off white plug has two cable runs: One with the yellow RCA video cable and a green trigger wire, and another shorter run with power (red), ground (black) and turn-on trigger wire (green). Both of those run separately, and both are sleeved with a durable outer casing, too.

At the tailgate end...

• We zip-tied the short 18" portion of the camera pigtail to the interior support structure of the tailgate so the wire doesn't flop around.
• The tailgate has several round holes in the bottom which I think were roughly 1/2" ID, but all I had was a 9/16 grommet on hand in my Dorman assortment pack, so we cut 1/16" out of the grommet and installed it to the hole so the wires don't get rubbed thru. Really gave the tailgate an OEM+ look.
• Routed the longer end of the harness up into the hole, and attached the video/power harness to the camera pigtail (both white connectors)

From there, we sent the power/ground wires up into the driver tail light housing, twisted the red and green Positap off the reverse light (+) wire, and black wire to the reverse light (-) wire. You can guess which is which b/c most grounds in our trucks are white with a black stripe, and the reverse light only has two wires going into it, so ... no-brainer. Posi-tap the ground to the white/black stripe wire, and power (red+green) to the other.

With the video feed, we traced the tail light/trailering harness up to the cab and zip-tied the cable to it. I used a small 2mm holepunch to pop a hole in the rubber floor hole cover at an angle, near the edge of the rubber floor plug, then slit the edge of the plug so we could slide the wire into the hole. This made for a seamless install, and the angle of the hole in the plug naturally slants the wire forward so it sits indetectably flat to the floor. From there, it was just a matter of fishing it up to the head unit, and attaching the green turn-on lead to the ATOTO pink "Camera power" wire, and attaching the RCA. Easy peasy. Lots of work, but the install is super clean looking.

And the image was a little grainy, but I think that was more a byproduct of the screen resolution on the ATOTO unit.

 

Yeah, I'm going to break down and polish my original Toyota glass in the future. I need it cleaned up, very fine hazy wiper drag marks on the window. I want to keep the original glass as long as possible.

I wish you could still get OEM quality glass, from Toyota. But the last person I know who ordered from them for our trucks got Fuyao glass. I dunno if it's because the dealer went to the local windshield shop, or if that's just what Toyota of America ships out?
