So why doesn't everyone wear hard contact lenses? What's the downside of them?

    my opinion:

There is WAYYY more money in selling you soft lenses.

    simple as that.

    It's akin to SAAS sales.

you have to keep buying them, because you can only use them for a short time.

I spend ~$150 year for gas perm hard lenses.

my kids spend ~$800 a year for soft.

and I have no idea why my kids use soft lenses....I think they were raised wrong.

yes, at first, they are a wee bit uncomfortable. but you acclimate in about 2 weeks.

if you wear soft....please go try hard lenses....and confirm how good you can see with them.

it's like the difference between cheap Bushnell binoculars & a nice set of Swarovski's

I wore eye glasses as a kid. Switched to soft contacts at 25. Sucked. Went back to glasses until 2005. My lasik doctor was highly regarded in Denver. Top. I was 49. Best decision I've ever made. Life changing. Glasses suck. Was finally free of them. 69 and 20/15.

so, your Rx never changed in all that time?

man, look here.....my Rx changes every year.

    I worked up to a -8.5 @ 40yrs old

and every year I'm getting better.

    I'm a -6.25 now.

that amount of change is not conducive to Lasik.

Everyone is different. Astigmatism or no. I go to the eye doc every year. The only thing that has changed since I got lasik is my reading glasses script. Of my 4 siblings, only myself needed glasses early on. Mild distance correction script. Some people aren't a good candidate for lasik. Luck of the draw.

I also can't poke myself in the eye so I make do with glasses.

I doubt I could convince my wife to make the switch.

It's great fun, but not always the workout I want. As with everything as I get older I can't quite hang in all aspects with the young guys. It's an adult league so anyone over 18. Every season there is a team that is all college kids and those games are rough. I've found I can't change directions as quick as these kids anymore so I get dropped if they can move quickly. Straight line sprinting I can still hang with them, and it's cool because it amazes a few of them. I'll get the random, "you're pretty quick for an old guy" comment.

This is interesting, I will ask about the hard contacts!!!

I also didn’t know they could do readers in contacts, and also in implanted lenses.

Most of my life I wore contacts every day. The reader part has complicated that.

I learned that the hard way! At this point after having 2 Achilles surgeries, I don't think I will every be as fast or be able to cut like I once was able to. Mainly because I never want to go through the surgery and recovery process again.

Totally understand that. About 9 years ago i had a complete outer ankle ligament tear. I thought my sports days were over, but modern medicine saved my butt. I just have a plate and screws in my ankle now.

I had never had a vision exam until about a year ago. I've had to start using 1.25 readers over the last few years and my wife really wanted me to get my eyes checked out. She used to be the laser tech for a Lasik company so shes know a bit about eye stuff. I go get the exam and the eye doc says I should be using 1.25 readers as needed. That's all. I've noticed over the last 6 months I'm wearing them more and more. Pretty much all day at work while I'm using the computer. Then last week I was off for vacation for the whole week. So 10 days of no screens. I haven't had to put my readers on once since coming back to work.

Been wearing glasses since Junior High.
Tried contacts for a few years in my 20's and never could get used to them. Didn't help that I was working in a dusty environment at the time.

Once I hit 55 I started having trouble with up close reading.
Made the switch to progressive style "no-line" lenses.
    All good now.

Wife has had contacts most of her adult life.
One is for near vision, one is for distance.
How the brain can make sense of that and give you a clear picture amazes me.
