Fix it or give up??,

2001 limited, 4wd access cab. Picked it up from family 8 years ago for cheap.
Truck has spent its whole life in the sun without a bath so hood and roof of cab are rusty. Was kept up mechanically but neglected ascetically but still a decent interior. Frame is solid and other than regular everyday driving has only seen central Florida’s sand and clay logging roads so a good film of red clay to preserve.
Anyway, transmission when out and from looking around could be as much as 4 grand to repair.
Motor still seems strong but from time to time gives me a p1126 which seems to only happen when we travel and use cruise control a lot. But codes are still clears itself after about a week. And it still gets fairly regular oil changes.
Having thoughts of fixing but hard to fathom sinking as much in it as I paid in the first place.

As for replacing vehical, would only have the funds to replace tranny plus whatever I could get for the truck with bad trans.

 

If you do go with repair, make sure the planetary gears are upgraded. That was a weak point in these transmissions up until 2003 when a stronger planetary gearset was put into it.

 

I paid $1800 OTD on a used unit, shipped to my shop with a full parts and labor warranty.

So, fix it or give up? Fix it. Or give up and I'll take it off your hands. I can be in FL by morning.

 

If you replace the trans, get one from a reputable source that will give you some warranty or help if there's a problem. Don't go with a parts truck. The job is too expensive to cut corners like that. I wouldn't do it unless the truck is otherwise in really nice shape and is in good repair (i.e., you do not have a laundry list of repairs and maintenance still waiting for you). At thsi age, this wont' be your last expensive repair.

 

It’s a tough call, this is the truck I drive during the summer because it has a/c and we also use it to go see our grandkids or family gatherings in the woods. My back up and hunting truck is the 95.5 taco that either it or I need a frontal lobotomy at this time.

 

Most repairs and maintenance I can do myself with a little guidance from sources like this forum until it comes to pulling major units as have neither the facilities nor the youth to do it. If I could get someone to pull it and get it on a stand, I could likely do it but have no knowledge about automatics (first one I have owned as my vehicle) and not very likely to find anything that meets my needs for the 4 grand plus 3 more if im lucky that I could get out of this one as is.

Do you only drive it in the summer? If so, that gives you some time to save for the repair.

If you have to replace this vehicle if you dont repair it, you wont be buying much of a vehicle for the equivalent cost of repair.

Whats the mileage on the tundra?

 

What was the nature and cause of the transmission failure? Do you tow with it?

 

Did you tow in OD?

 

Yes but biggest loads on highway were only around 1500 # and that was several years ago

 

That looks like your typical crud. Are there metallic particles in the crud? What exactly is the failure? Slipping? Will not shift into gear? Does it show a code - will need to use a code reader that reads transmission codes. These codes do not usually trigger an idiot light on the dash.
