The Great HU Install of 2023

Question for the group. I have a Kenwood DMX and when it was fully extended the L brackets had to be installed. I have since recessed the screen fully and to do that you remove the L brackets.

Do yall notice a screen vibration? Like a shimmer effect? Is there a fix or a step I missed?

 

Guys I hate to revive this but I need to pull the trigger on a new HU. I have a DDX9906XR and I need to either move to the 7 or the
DMX1057XR. My question about these big 9-10 inch panels to those that have them... Do the mounts for them ever go over time? I had a Dasaita and it vibrated and the screen stayed shaking and it drove me insane.. Here are my 2 Toyotas for FYI (its been a while since I posted)

 

I had the same question. I clicked with JBL, then filled my cart. Continued shopping, clicked without JBL for same head unit and installation parts and added to my cart. Comparing the two ‘options’ —> exact same installation part list!

Off the top of my head, not sure. Would have to go back and dig through the wiring diagrams…

 

The JBL System is more speakers (10) with center and sub. The amp under the passenger seat feeds them all. So, if you leave the factory Amp alone I believe your speakers will all be fine as well.
I don't believe any after-Mfg makes an Amp to replace it with more power.
You would need a bunch of Amps to feed all the factory locations (2 x 4-channel, plus mono-sub, plus mono-center).
Might as well re-wire the entire sound system while you're at it and use 'real' speaker wire!

 

Several manufacturers make 8-channel amps that could be used. The JBL system has a woofer in lower door, and the door sail and side dash speakers are set up on a crossover for mid/high (so they are a single channel from the amp). That's how you end up with 12 speakers on an 8-channel system (the rear door is also a crossover with woofer/tweeter).

 

Looking for suggestions in this world, so with so many experts on these systems on here, figured I would ask to see if there is anything I am missing. I would like to add a rear camera to my truck camper, but the ONLY one that I can find that seems to be plug & play with the OEM Toyota plug at the rear of my truck is this honking thing from Camera Source:

It is definitely the easiest solution to allow me to unplug the stock tailgate cam and plug in this thing when I have the camper loaded. I can't believe it's the only plug & play solution, but maybe it is. It's ugly & almost as much money as the damn Alpine camera (which I assume is better quality), but if I go to the Alpine, then I need to run a whole new cable to the head unit and buy a second camera for the OEM one in the tailgate as well to be able to swap between them as load & unload the camper. Just want to make sure I am exhausting all options. Any suggestions or input is appreciated.

 

(You have a catch-22 problem) OEM camera operates at 6V+, while aftermarket cameras typically operate at 12V+
If you can find a 6V aftermarket camera that mounts to the license bracket on your cab-over... problem solved (almost)
Snake it to the same location as the tail-gate camera plugs into the harness and make the plugs match, so you can switch them at will.

 

I am apparently an idiot and can’t figure out how to do the over the air update on the alpine ilx-f511. Does anyone have a step by step for dummies? I have tried connecting to the internet at the house and it says server connection failed. I can’t get my phone to connect as a hot spot…..I am positive it’s use error and the ota update is 6.0….sominwant to do that if possible.

 

So I AM an idiot, my firmware is up to date. Has anyone else had any issues with the head into freezing and not connecting to CarPlay? Mine has been acting up lately and was hoping a firmware would help but that’s obviously not the case

I am running into a issue with my Alpine. I just recently installed the unit after it sitting in my room for the last 2 years, installation went fine with the Maestro and the radio was working fine for the last month and half.

However in the last week, the radio doesn't turn on after it sits overnight, I am able to get it back on by moving the screen either up or down and it works as usual throughout the day. The radio comes on after it sitting for hours during my work but for some reason, it doesn't turn back on after sitting overnight.

I was thinking of the issue being a loose connection but it wouldn't explain the radio working after sitting for hours during my work and it able to power on on the drive home.

Not sure if if my Maestro or Alpine is the culprit or something else.

Let me know if you have run across this issue and if it has been resolved.

If you have to move your screen, it is likely a loose connection somewhere. The first thing I would start with is the connection from the actual unit to the screen - there are a lot of connections there and if not properly seated it can cause issues. Also, there is a plastic cover / shroud that screws in to the rear of the screen......make sure that connection is tight as well. I think without this the unit will not power up.....may be that that connection is loose.

 

This is what I was going to suggest^^

@Iilac, there's a plastic piece with two prongs that you NEED to install. If it's not seated correctly, or is broken or missing, it will have power issues or not start at all. It's a safety feature to make sure you attach the screen the right way.

 

I have to check on that again, I remember the plastic piece with the 2 prongs but I don't the shroud.

 

I know that piece, is it supposed to click into place? Mine is just sitting in there and it's loosely held.

 

It is loose, yes, but glad you have it in there at least. I'd do what Shawn mentioned and make sure you have all the bolts and whatnot in place to secure the screen to the chassis

 

I started the truck this morning around 7 AM and got back into the truck today around 7 pm. Radio started back up fine.

We will see if the radio starts tmrw morning.

Radio started up fine this morning. Not sure if the duration of the radio being off has anything to do with the issue. Will still look into loose cables or pins when I get an opportunity to dive in.

 

I am having issues as well with my Alpine F511 - as in I cannot get it to connect at all, wired or wireless. I originally installed this head unit into a 2021 and everything worked great. That truck was totaled and I swapped the HU to a 2020. When i try to connect wired, I get a message that the GPS antenna is not connected. Why I would need that for the wired connection is annoying. When i try wireless, just sends me a message that its unable to connect.

I was using the adapter Rainman suggested to connect to the OEM Navigation port, but i think im going to have to order a 3rd party antenna to install for the GPS to get carplay working

 

check to make sure you plugged into the gps adapter in the back of the head unit…..it fits in both ports on the back. If you have it plugged into the wrong one it will go haywire

 

Id have to pull it again, but assuming im in the right port if the SXM functionality is working, yes?

Had this same issue. Turns out that the center pin for GPS receptacle in the back of the head unit was missing. Sent in to Alpine, and they sent me back a new HU.

Plug the RCA into the jack labeled "front camera".

Your camera should have a separate power wire. I minimized wiring behind the HU because there is already 10lbs of shit in a 5lb sack back there. I sourced power in the engine compartment.
