This is the first ad I've put together for the studio in a long time. In the past, my return on print ads has never been good but I got a screaming deal on a small space and I need to start taking some steps forward. What is your initial gut reaction to this?

    Nutcracker Program Ad.jpg
Does it make you go to the website? Would it get you to pick up the phone?

Yes, I know the site does not have any images like this on it and I realize that could be a potential issue. I'm trying to change that but if you've seen my IG account lately, you know I'm all over the place. Like, literally, all over the place. That being said, if you went to the website, does the imagery there do anything for you?

The ad will be 2.5" x 4". It will go on the bottom right of a right hand page in a theater program. The goal is to stay simple and clean but create an impact. If everyone picks up a program, it should be viewed by 500 people, maybe more.

I'm not sure what you started out with, but could you make the dress/skirt thing look less rigid looking, or is that how its supposed to be? It has a little bit of a flying saucer look to it.

I thought it was a dance/ballet studio from the ad. Throw the word photography somewhere in the ad...otherwise very nice. And I did check out your site, very clean look! But the landing page (front page) needs an indicator that you do photography as well.

Yea, the tutu was built that way.

Interesting comment. What if I did something like this in the ad?

Definitely needs the word Photography in there, I automatically thought dance studio too. The picture is a great one, however my eyes find it a tad dark..Your work is incredible!

Yea, I never changed the number when we moved. Appreciate any words you're willing to spread.

Does this work better for wording?

Yeah, what they said... Definitely needs the word Photography and it looks a tad dark. Is 949 not a Denver area code? It always confuses me when a business doesn't have a local area code. But otherwise, looks amazing. Like the logo, clean font. Is that your daughter? What a great dance pose.

No, 949 is Orange County. Kept the number when we moved as I still had Southern California clients that were getting in touch. Does the number even need to be there?

Yep, that's our middle daughter. Bolshoi offered her another full scholarship for next summer. This will be her job.

How 'bout this version? Creating catchy buzz words has never been a strong point.

Are you going to lighten up the picture? Is the program going to be in color or B/W? Keep in mind it's usually really dark in theaters and most people probably won't even take home their programs. You may only have one shot for them to see your ad.

Can't. I lit it as a silhouette. Did it that way to highlight the shapes and lines.

Is it just for ballet stuff? Can you try placing your web address in bold to see if it stands out?
The photo, to me- makes me think it’s just for ballet services

Perhaps add your last name at the top, above the photo?

I agree with Sean; people's brains will quickly think it is for a ballet studio and the ones not interested in putting their daughters in ballet will quickly dismiss it without looking at words. The brain picks up the word "studios" faster than anything else. Couple that with the picture and my brain thinks ballet.

It definitely helped to put "photographic" in there. But the bell of the ball and show stopper is your fantastic picture of your daughter, which will throw off the impulsive on-lookers.

Yeah, the problem is the word Studio coupled with a dance picture. If you had a dance studio, I would enroll my daughters right away! I think the word Photography has to be more pronounced.

web site is in bold now.

i've had more dance and headshot clients recently than anyone else. ideally, where i want to be is high end portraits and commercial work. weddings were fun but the market is really over saturated and my price point for them is on the high side.

I do like it and understand why you picked the photo. Like the others have said I initially thought something about dance/ballet and adding the photographic services helps a lot. I don't mind the silhouetting of the image. Adds to the mystery for me. My question is do you want to make the image be the part that stands out or your graphics/text? I'm thinking if you make the graphics/text part be the primary thing you see, you can then change out the image once in a while to keep it fresh. Oh, and since your getting a lot of input from a bunch of guys, I'd ask some women too.

BTW I am enjoying reading your photography lessons. Thanks!

If photography is the only service - maybe "Slavin Photography" or "Slavin Pictures "would be in your logo sans "studios". The URL can stay if you like those ideas.

it isn't the only service. at some point in the near future, there will be video. plus, with the idea of migrating to more commercial orientated work, the services are expanded.

I believe Sean has the word "studio" because he has a location where people go to for pics. I'm assuming that is the thinking. At first I thought the same thing, that it was a dance studio, but adding photography clears it for me.
