To each his own. I wanted to push the replacement off as long as possible as well but changed my mind when reports of the new engines started coming in. Didn’t want to miss out on a revised design and potentially better fuel economy. Also figured 125000kms for free was a good deal. Made sense to get it replaced while I had the time in stead of it letting go in winter and SOL. Also figured I’d I had a failure on a motor with a known issue that would be on me but if the replacement failed, then I did my due diligence and I can blame someone else.

Edit: There should also be a sweet spot where the dealer techs did enough replacements so they know what they’re doing but not so many where it starts to be too easy and they lose focus. Mine was around #20 at my dealership.

Or he must not drive through the middle of nowhere Alabama 1000 miles from home with wife, dog, and tons of gear. But hey, if you drive only 5 miles from home by all means delay as long as possible.

I've seen no evidence the replacement engines are immune to the same bearing failures. So the "what ifs" are really no different, IMO.

If my truck was on the recall list, I'd milk the bonus miles as long as possible. If I made it to 100K miles without failure, I might consider getting my new engine then.

He's not kidding! Not fun in ATL. And thinking possible failure - not good

Its a 1% failure rate. I will take those odds. You probably have at least the same odds they screw something up on the install.

Why is the engine primarily failing in the Tundra? I know it has failed in the Lexus LS to some degree, but seems to perform better in the GX, and has been around longer than both. Right? What is special about the Tundra tuning? Is it simply that the Tundra is produced in larger numbers and therefore is discussed more? Are Tundras put under greater duress?

I live in Metro ATL as well.

    Engine failure could be fatal.

Frankly if I have a failure and survive the first call I make after get truck back with new engine is Carvana. Thankfully I am in a position I dont have to wait and find out if Toyota fixed the problem

With all the 3rd gen’s dropping like flies on busy freeways, I would expect ambulance sirens blaring and headline news on primetime tv.

To each his own is the point which you missed.

If you do happen to live in an area where 2/3 of the people think wide open is a safe speed, you quickly realize how poor an arbitir of risk the general population is.

In terms of big crash ups I invite you to watch the Atlanta news. Like most big cities they report the ones where people die or close the interstate for hours if it's a slow day and there are not 6 murders or an active shooter situation that takes the air time

This forum. I don't have time to search for you.

We road-trip cross country typically 2 times a year, and I can confirm that Atlanta drivers are the worst of any place we've been. I try to time our route so we are traveling thru that shit-hole in the middle of the night.

My only experience with Toyota roadside assistance was 15 years ago with 1-800 Lexus. Back then and I think now Toyota subbed it out to AAA whose service is just awful. They throw you tow request on the tow truck service queue and never check it gets fulfilled. AAA pays so little every operator takes other jobs first. I spent 5 hours on the side of the road for that one .

My truck is mainly local. But occasionally I do a 4 hr round trip to a work site. Everytime I leave it enter my mind is this the day I am going to camp out for 6 hours on the side of the road in 100 degrees heat? I find myself just saying screw it and take the wife's vehicle.

I sure see a lot of 3rd gens safely and happily cruising the nations highways. If you read some of the opinions on here you'd swear someone found a cheap and simple way to retrofit the boat anchor 5.7 in place of the ittly bitty 3.4.

On some of my road trips to FL I pass through ATL. So I get to do the Capital Beltway and other DC Metro nightmares like I-270 and I-95 AND the ATL mess in the same day. LOL. Fun, fun fun. Fatone is correct, if your truck dies on any of these you are in a world of hurt. And we do not know that the failure rate is 1% since Toyota never said that or told us anything. And for a high consequence result, a 1% probability is a lot. Heck, if the lottery was 1% chance to win, I'd play every day. Unlike the extremely low odds reality where I haven't played ever.

We also had very bad service from AAA when our daughters Santa Fe engine exploded on a busy freeway (sound familiar?). We switched to Coachnet and have had to use it twice and have had excellent service both times, with them checking in with expected arrival times and follow up call to make sure they did arrive etc. Highly recommended.

I ask because I’ve been monitoring this forum - I’ve yet to see a report of a long block replacement failing.

Unless I’m missing it, which I could be, I don’t see anything that highlights long block replacement failures.

I’m trying to play Toyota PR boy here, I’m genuinely curious as I haven’t seen anything pointing to long block failures.

Here's a couple of "Possibles" ... of course could be a dealer install issues.

In reference to the spreadsheet I would assume the first replacement engine was a long block as per recall... a second failure would be said long block? Or am I confused?

Unless the motor was replaced under the recall, it only got a short block rebuild(most likely)

So no evidence of a long block failing...just speculation on our part so far

Both engines were replaced under recall so one would assume long block

all three were 22' non hybrids on the spreadsheet... ? So they would have received long blocks?

As long as it was done during the recall window and not prior to the recall, yes
