That sucks, I get that there needs to be some kind of structure in place and a certain level of regulation but to flat out deny people the right to tap into God's given water is bull! If someone has the property and wants to tap a well and they have the money to hire a licensed person then why do they need to fight for permits to get water to survive! I know there is alot I dont know from this situation and dont have a horse in the race but from the far outside looking in it sounds flat out stupid! I will do the least that I can and pray for this situation to come to some resolve!

The San Luis Valley is 8,000 sq miles. Only 50K population. Alamosa is just under 10K. The valley is mostly big ass farms and ranches that are privately owned by families that settled here quite some time ago. A good thing of course. This also means that they have old water rights which is also deserved. The San Luis valley has the largest aquifier in the country. The water table is dropping. Last year lots of snow pack in the surrounding mountains. Normal spring temps for a normal runoff. Not this year. Lower snow pack combined with a warmer spring screwed things up. I have a 1/4 acre on the Rio Grande about 35 minutes south of me a few miles north of the New Mexico border. I stopped by there first this morning to check a crawdad trap. The water level is less than 50% of normal! I didn't check the trap. My grandson was going to check the trap, but where he walks down a ledge to get to the river...a rattlesnake! I went to throw a large lava rock at it, but skedattled away . Going back this Friday with my 10-22. Ha!. The problem is water for people that live off grid here that can't afford a well. The county will issue a restricted well permit which is beyond most off gridders budget. The alternative is to go into town and buy water. This was normal for prolly 45 years. It was suddenly cut off LAST WEEK with no notice by two local towns. Game changer. Doesn't affect me, but it does cause an immediate problem for a lot of people. Any reasonable person would realize that this is not fair. Pretty much sums up the situation. I'm not a fan of the governor here in CO, but if he gets wind of this, I'm sure action will be taken. He is a decent man. There are folks here on both sides of the political fence that are being screwed. A plus for him to fix this. He has future political endeavors ahead with governor term limits.

Ok, thanks for summing it up for me. All it takes is one crooked king to screw up a house of cards and that's what I'm gathering. As far as the rattlesnake would it be wrong if it somehow found its way to a certain couple people's door steps........:monocle:, yeah that's probably wrong to think that way:rolleyes:. Glad your grandson seen it in time. Maybe you'll find it and have a custom shifter boot made with its skin!

Never tried it, but they say with the right amount of smoke, seasoning and sauce anything can taste like chicken

I should quantify what off gridders are here. Sure there are a few survivalist nuts and many preppers. I'm a prepper. BFD. Most are folks with kids. They are off grid, but 10 minutes from Ft Garland. Brand new school. K-12. Brand new. My Ft Garland property is only 2 miles from a power pole. Not exactly in the middle of nowhere.

Both of my properties are somewhat remote from the local hospital here in Alamosa. I have Eagle Air Med. $300 for a 5 year plan. Shit hits the fan for me....a helicopter picks me up. Free.
