If you're on the recall list and experience a failure - you cut in line. You only get a short block if you're not on the list.

It would be nice to see the paperwork from the oil-change itself. Was it a Toyota dealership oil change or somewhere else. I've seen reports where both dealerships and oil change places have not filled the engine up, filled it up but left the oil pan plug out, etc.

The good news is it seems to be covered under warranty and you're getting a new short block as a replacement.

He got a full long block because the motor failed with considerable damage to the block and head. The motor was not salvageable at that point. You get a short block if you simply come in for the recall but haven’t experienced a failure. Anyway. He’s lawyering up because he’s done with the truck. Not sure what he intends to do. Truck is still at the dealership awaiting full tear down. But the same scenario as the first occured, leaving him completely dead on side the road heading home from work

I don't think that is correct Danman, I think you get a full long block because the oil contaminates may have reached anything that uses the oil.

I could be wrong, someone on here who knows for sure will correct me but the whole reason the recall is going in phases is because complete long blocks are needed for all recalled engines whether they have failed or not.

Yes, if you're in the recall, you get a long block.

Possibly regarding that. Either way, the motor failed. It was replaced with a whole new motor. That motor failed too. Whether getting a long or short block seems irrelevant at this point lol. The only reason he got a tundra was because he loved my 18 and got a hell of a deal on his 23. I’m at 104k on my 18 with just general maintenance. I feel bad for him because this is nothing but time, money and aggravation to him. And I don’t blame him.

New(er) Toyotas have oil level sensor (part #89491-50081 - https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/sensor-engine-oil-level-8949150082). V35A, A25A, T24A - all come with oil level sensor. It informs the ECU about oil level being below certain level and displays "Low Oil Level" message / alarm on the screen. Oil pressure sensor is part #83520-60070 - https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/gage-assy-oil-press-8352060070.
You should inform yourself before making categoric statements.

Actually they do. After my last oil change i received a message on the infotainment screen my oil level was low. Turned around right back to the dealer. 2 quarts low.

2.5 gen here and NOT here to troll…..I don’t care what side of the fence you’re on, this is concerning. Sure we can all explain it away by saying the incidence is a much lower percentage than perceived. I agree with that. I guess the real reason it’s such a big deal to any of us was the historical Toyota reliability. They started having issues and took a huge stance to rebuild / replace engines under a recall campaign. One of the only automakers to do something that extreme. That’s good and shows that they care about their customers.

However, now that there are some examples of the rebuilt / replacement motors failing????? That’s a HUGE red flag for me and tells me that Toyota hasn’t figured out the entire list of problems with this engine……will definitely think twice about getting a third gen for those reasons. I am SURE they will have it figured out by the time I am in the market again, but regardless this is concerning:

Let's be real - the ONLY reason there is a recall is the fear of being penalized / fined by NHTSA if it was later found out they knew and did not take action. If Toyota gave a shit about their customers - everyone that ponied up money for a hybrid wouldn't be left out.

I watched this week's edition of Motorweek with the Lexus LX hybrid. John Davis sounded like he was reading off the Toyota sales literature about keeping physical starter so the engine can operate without the hybrid blah blah blah. Wait for it. And the hybrid can solo "get you off the trail in case of engine failure". Last part is a direct quote from the show about a $125k vehicle

Yep that is where Toyota is with the 3.4. Get a hybrid one so you don't get killed sitting in the middle of the road when the engine fails. Selling hybrid as engine failure aid feature.

It’s like those airplanes that come with a built-in parachute. Personally, I’d prefer a plane that didn’t need a parachute.

Yeah, but hasn't that been "proven" false in multiple instances of ICE engine failure? The hybrid portion shuts down also.
Maybe it has just been in certain failures and not all?
Theory/spitballing here: IF it is a non-catastophic failure, that is, engine can still turn over, Hybrid motor will provide motive power. If engine says nope, I ain't turning, all bets are off, and Hybrid does squat.

FWIW, this is my understanding, as well, from multiple reports. NotRyan also confirmed there is no "motive power" when the hybrid's ICE engine main bearings fail.

If this is true, Toyota has some explaining to do.

Not sure the "hybrid engine failure safety feature" would save me in Metro Atlanta. Everybody is going 110. I need an afterburner not a battery to get to the median safety.

#197 2021 Tundra TRD Pro Double Cab ordered in it's final model year. You could only get a TRD Pro double cab in 2021 buy ordering one. I ordered five weeks before Toyota closed down orders for that year. I would argue my TRD Pro is one of the rarest Tundra's ever made. 285/70/18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. RCI rock sliders Leer Tonneau Cover NSV Hood Mounted Lightbar. Genuine Cooling Systems Transmission Cooler (FU Toyota for taking the coolers off in the 1st place WTF) Suspension air bags for better towing.

Toyota is as bad as Ford at this point. With respect to the OP only a effing fool would buy a Tundra at this point. I wouldn't trust that tiny turbo over anything. Hell, I would buy a 5.0 L Coyote F-150 in a heart beat....hell a Ecoboost F-150 before I even touched a Tundra. That's coming from a Toyota superfan...former Superfan.

Nah! I am just so disappointed in Toyota it makes me sick. I have a brother that had an engine go out in a 2022 Tundra, and my neighbor three doors down had a beautiful (minus the front end) 1794 2023 blow its engine with 9,000 miles on it. It sat in his driveway for three months while he waited for a new engine. The quality overall has dropped so bad it is just beyond disappointing. As for me it will take years and years for Toyota to win me back.

I will never ever sell my 2021 TRD Pro double cab. That's my daily commuter right now. The 2024 4Runner, 2023 GX 460, the 2021 Tundra, and the 2022 Sequoia, are the end of the Toyota era IMHO. All these tiny over stressed turbos and hybrids will never meet the quality that was once Toyota. The fit and finish is terrible too.

I am actually adding a transmission cooler to it on the 20th of August and some air bags on the back for better towing. My parents are retiring from the camping life and I am buying their trailer and getting the truck ready to tow better than it does. I have towed it a dozen times already when I took the kiddos camping, but because of the Fox Shox suspension it sinks quite a bit in the back, so having some air bags should help level it out nicely.

GWaldo....Any way to learn where Toyota is in the recall process. Mfg Year /Month. Am somewhat surprised that they do not keep us informed about a general timeline. In other words we are currently working on trucks with a Mfg date of July 2022......August 2022 will start in another 4 weeks. This would be helpful. Kid
