Got the battery recharged and tested so it’s still good for the Impala. No AC is my big concern.

Is it typical of 17 year old GM cars to lose refrigerant at 88k miles when sitting idle for 9 months? I remember it was working fine last year. I’ll have to hook up a gauge on the low pressure port to check.

Absolutely talking shoes. I'm old enough to remember when that's pretty much the only thing trucks came with in the rear. To your question about why I'm messing with them, well, dumbass award for me again. They were going on 7 years front and back and silly me just figured it was about time rather than actually LOOKING. What a novel idea. I did all of this prior to discovering this lovely forum and purchased the whole works from, you guessed it, Amazon! I bought Bendix which used to be a quality brand. Went nuts and bought the whole works - new rotors and pads along with shoes and drums. From what I'm seeing, it's hardly worth turning a drum or rotor anymore. Am I mistaken? I went with Bendix Priority1 CFC976 Ceramic pads up front and Bendix Premium 764 organic in the rear. Probably should have gone ceramic all the way around, but, hey, I'm rusty as hell.

I'm going to have to open up the rears again. The driver side rear was absent the little metal tab that fits into the adjuster. Yes, another dumbass award. I looked right at it, said "shit", and put it back together anyhow. Now, not surprisingly, the shoes are not auto-adjusting and the emergency brake is just almost to the floor. Since I'm opening it up again, guessing a definite YES on the Toyota shoes?

Thanks. Some of us are slow learners. Have to shoot ourselves in the foot a few times before we get it.

p.s. TOTALLY agree with hassle factor. Looking at Toyota gear just didn't occur to me....

I would. I definitely won't buy A/M shoes again due to the hassle that I went through.

If I was billing by labor hours while doing my own shoes, I would have paid more in labor by having to replace the shoes twice than what I "saved" by buying aftermarket. Time is money.

My truck had to sit like this for a day after the A/C Delco issues as Toyota didn't have them in stock. Thankfully they came in the next day so I got the project done by 6pm the next day.

Did you grease the adjuster when installing?

I replaced my shoes and hardware with Power Stop and only went OEM on the drums. I had no issues.

    Answering your Q's:

Turning drums, if OEM and not rusted to shit, and if they actually need it, is totally viable, and a good money-saver.

It kills me how many people are, like, "Ok, I'm replacing the shoes, gotta replace the drums!". NO! You don't need to.
    • Unless there is physical damage to the drum, you DO NOT need to replace the drum, you'll be better off with that old OEM drum than a new aftermarket.
    • Unless there is clear sign of runout/warpage to the drum (there are basic tools to test this!), you DO NOT need to have the drums turned.
A lot of folks make this out to be a bigger time and $$ expense than it need be.

It doesn't need to be this hard. Look at the shoes: Do is the wear mostly-even, with slightly less material at the leading edge of where the shoe breaks? If yes, GREAT! Is the thinnest/leading edge showing more than 2mm of material? If yes, GREAT, you don't need to replace the shoes. I know we all want to strive for the perfect braking experience, but let's be real: Discs will always brake better, but drums are intended to function better, last longer, on vehicles that typically carry loads.

You're going to get better experiences out of your drums by properly bleeding (starting with the LSPV if present, using vacuum or pressure bleeding), by ensuring the star adjuster is working properly and lubed, and maybe most importantly, ensuring you setup the bellcranks properly b/c the OEM tolerance is very tiny. There's a reason THIS THREAD EXISTS. It's not rocket science, but it's not entirely intuitive either.

But yes, if you ABSOLUTELY NEED TO DO NEW SHOES, just go with OEM. Like TBM said, PowerStop has been a pretty good alternative, but I don't think the price point is truly that different. I swear I had OEMs loaded up in my cart during the last July 4th sale and it came out to $25/pair. $50 to redo the shoes with brand new OEM is not bad. But you must understand, we have some people on here, like KNABORES, who are like 250k miles in on the original factory shoes, and they still don't need replacement. They genuinely last a really f'n long time if they're properly adjusted and maintained.

I actually did the power stop kit with rotors. Kept what I think were the OEM drums, with power stop rear pads.
Limited miles for me, but I am happy with them. (after new bellcranks and PB adjustments....)
Power Stop rotors and pads all the way around on the Ferd Edge as well, and good results.
Put on the Civic I had too....

Same here on originals over 250k miles and
have a pair of OEM shoes from the last sale in the shop ready to install. @ 247K miles the slimmest part were still about 3 mm (.012") and drum IDs were stout at 295.32-295.35 mm well within spec.

Yes. There seem to be more options available online (Ebay) for the AC than there are for the double cab. The slot that limits the range of movement for the armrest is on the top for the AC and on the bottom for the DC. I may have that backwards but they are not interchangeable. Not sure if other models would work, but potentially the sienna or camry could work.

Those are deffo not the part numbers I tried to order prior for my 2006 AC / dual captain / dk grey leather. Can you actually get those, like ... 00016-34115-65 ? I do realize it's a SET offering based on the number, not a Toyota offering, hence my curiosity. I guess SET ported my truck to leather or something, if I go by Toyota's logged info.

I'd tried to order a leather replacement from Serra back in 2021 and we came up with p/n 728200C140B1, or possibly 728200C140B3 but they weren't willing to purchase the part to inspect it and potentially send back, so they cancelled the order. That was a long time ago, dealing with their much shittier Decatur AL location versus the Birmingham loc. On one of the next orders I placed w/Decatur, their parts manager boned me on some splash aprons and wouldn't make it right, so I wrote them off.

He informed me back then, "Both are cloth. If port did it, its no longer available, if the dealer did it, they might be able to still help".

Both come up in the system as MED GREY though, and I see B3 has been discontinued, only B1 is available now.

I dunno. I've just been rolling with a crusty armrest and making do. I may swing over to Banister's in East Point one of these days and see if they'll stitch something matching together. I've used them for other upholstery stuff in the past. More of a hot-rod focused shop, but they'll take on jobs like this. I know they're going to charge me probably $150 to perfectly match the armrest, and likely $200-250 each for both the upper and the lower, if I get lucky. And that's just to stitch in the panels. Entire seat would probably be $1k-1.2k

Damn, that cost. I would've looooved to've gotten one at that price. FML.

It's the one thing I've never been happy with on my truck, the driver's seat. The original owner really didn't take care of the leather. Almost as little attention as he paid to oil change interval standards.

Yeah, same here. My arm rests are super cracked up and I have a nasty cig burn hole and tear on my driver front seat. I had my grandma in law whip me up some arm rest covers in the meantime.

72 and scattered showers all day here. I can not complain. We haven't even broken 100º yet this year, but we still have a couple more months for it to get stupidly hot.
