I still want to bring the boat, otherwise I'd definitely just build a small trailer. Currently i'm thinking 1/5" plywood on a 2x4 frame and a few coats of fiberglass resin and latex paint. But I'm afraid it will be close to the 1500lb mark.

If I lived out west I would consider finding a used 3/4 ton and keeping the camper, but I just need something better than a tent here in FL. :D

Can you do small boat or kayaks and put on the truck? That's my method. Another option is two vehicles which isn't terrible if mostly close to home.

I think wood will weigh too much as well. What about aluminum framing rails?

My onboard camper starts with these toolboxes as sideboards and gets built up from there ending with a Soft Topper camper shell up top. Light, strong, secure, versatile...Screenshot_20250726-085747.png

Why not just throw a tent, stove and box of equipment in the bed of your truck and go?

He said he needs more than a tent, maybe rain is a factor. For me, I need the truck bed for food and beverage coolers, suitcases, dog bed, etc. Basically, the last minute stuff that doesn't live in the trailers year round goes in the truck bed and it pretty much fills it up. I do not ever go shopping when I go camping though, if we don't have, we adapt to do without.

But you obviously have a trailer...

The only tent I've ever had where rain was a concern was the 50-year-old one we borrowed from my wife's parents.

Come to think of it, OP is in Florida, so maybe gators. I'm not doing a simple nylon tent in gator land, so maybe he isn't either. Now, perhaps he could do a rooftop tent and pack some lighter gear in the boat and the heavy brew coolers and so on in the bed under the tent rack.

Strut is retarded expensive. I can weld aluminum (poorly) but even some 2" square aluminum tube would be pretty expensive. Aluminum also stress cracks easily depending how its built. I don't think the frame itself in wood would be that heavy, it's the siding and roofing that adds up. The travel lite camper has aluminum siding which is light weight and easy to install, but pricey when you add up the square footage.

I've realized also it doesn't have to be that strong. It can be rather flimsy for most situations. Which explains why many of them are built so cheesy.

Cause tenting sucks. It downpours in Florida during the summer and they leak. Last time I tented I woke up at 3am to an ankle deep puddle in the tent. Putting them up and down sucks. Can't tent at a rest stop for the night. We have car camped for years it is just getting tight. I liked the extra room from the truck camper and the setup and takedown time is a matter of minutes.

    Payload nancy's look away.

Here is about 3500 pounds of Ipe i saved from the dumpster several years ago. Not all of it was in this load, but I built a small screened lanai, redecked a 16ft pontoon boat, and built about 165ft of privacy fencing with it.

Ironically my other tundra went into limp mode this week for the air pumps and i think it has a bad left rear wheel bearing. My hewitt kit showed up today and I'm going to order 4 new bearings for next weekend.

Some of the fencing rotted. I made the mistake of cutting the fence pickets and stacking them in the weeds getting wet for almost 2 years. I'm no wood scientist, but i guess even Ipe is not immune to rot. It seemed almost indestructable when i stacked it.
