    Hi,

I was going to do a coolant drain and fill and I'm wondering what you guys are using for coolant.

And I'm going to just drain the radiator and fill it instead of messing with the drains on the engine block, because I don't know if they have ever been used, and just don't want to mess with them. I'll just do the radiator thing more often.

Does anyone know how much coolant I'll get out of just the radiator?

    Thanks!

I use Toyota red, it takes most of 3 quarts edit, I meant GALLONS to fill an empty system, most of the coolant is in the block/heater & just draining the radiator is like taking a bath in a tub you washed your dog in & ladled 20 cups out of before adding water.

    According to the Haynes manual

2uz-FE total coolant capacity is 10.3 QTs
    3ur-FE total coolant capacity
    With tow pkg 13.7 Qts
    Without tow pkg. 12.8. QTs

The vast majority of the capacity is the radiator

my owners manual says the same quantities

I use this same method just a radiator drain and fill about every 3 yrs and I use Amsoil coolant. IMO Toyota fluids are vastly over rated

That's funny, I just read my owner's manual and it said that for my 4.6L it was these amounts that you posted. I guess I have the tow package because I have a hitch and a button on the end of the shifter that is for towing.

I just did the flush. I just opened the radiator cap, and the drain petcock and I got 6.5 quarts out.

    It was very clean.

I just filled it back up. I went with Prestone Max red.

I was really happy to get that much changed out. After how easy it was and how much I got out, I can't imagine ever wanting to pull a wheel, remove a plastic shield, buy a tube, and hope that I don't damage something. And keep another tube around that has to dry out before storing it, etc. This was so easy I could do it multiple times a year and be really happy no problem.

    Thanks for posting the numbers!

Thanks. This was not my experience. I just did the radiator only and got 6.5 quarts out. Not sure how yours only has 3 quarts in both the radiator and block drain.

Others have posted that the majority is in the radiator. My experience is that about half of the total capacity is in the radiator.

I get what you are saying about the dog bath, but an average bath is probably 20-30 gallons and 20 cups is about 1.25 gallons. So that's only about 5%. So I think that is just a little bit exaggerated of a statement. And there's not a dirty dog in my coolant system. In fact, what I took out was very clean.

The radiator method achieves about 50%. Which means, it's about 10x more than the dog bath scenario percentage wise :)

How much do you get out of the block?

I am not surprised that the 4.6L has the same coolant capacity as the 5.7L since the 4.6L is based on the 5.7L

Yes, surprisingly a lot is the same. I have not seen anything different yet.

I just replaced my motor with a newly built motor, it took 90% of 3 gallon bottles.

I don't know what the block alone took but the heater output hose came off & as it was off because it's 1000 degrees in Phoenix, all that was lost was what was in the core. It took more than a gallon so there's alot in there.

I mean when you do your drain and fill, how much comes out of the block drain?

When I drained it, it went into a bucket & I disposed of it, I did not need to measure what came out, the fills have always been most of 3 gallons (and a 12oz bottle of water wetter).

    This is on a 2010 5.7 Crew Max Tundra & a 2013 5.7 Sequoia.

OK thanks. Some other guy on a youtube video said about 2 quarts come out of the block drain.
