I'm assuming the box isn't being used for electric. Imagine trying to figure out which is line and which is neutral on the other end.

The cup-up positioning of the nuts, allowing them to hold water, really vexed my OCD but I opted to just STFU.

Chill out guys. It’s the power feed for a submersible fountain / LED light thing for a kiddie pool for all the neighbors kids that wanna come over and swim.

Seen way worse in residential wiring. I have a friend that's a tattoo artist, and he always "knows a guy." Unfortunately "that guy" is always someone that's saying they can do the work in exchange for free or discounted tattoo work, when they actually have no fucking idea of how to do that work. I redid a bunch of the wiring in a garage for him, apparently "that guy" didn't believe in running ground wires to anything or putting covers over junction boxes.

Despite the color code OCD snafu, this is all properly wired to the panel and grounded. This is a makeshift junction box outside that feeds the shop building outback. Provides 30 amp service. I may upgrade to 60amp if we keep the place.

Shit, I just replaced my grandmas ceiling fan yesterday and found out that someone used speaker wire to connect from the house to the old fan, for whatever reason.

They probably used what was once referred to as "lamp wire", which looks identical to speaker wire, same clear casing, copper stranded wire inside, sometimes had a goldish hue to the clear casing, same figure-8 shape to the sheath which could be split in the middle.

But who knows, I know some folks who'd do anything to get a buck and would've actually used speaker wire in a pinch.

It might have been exactly that. It looked like what you described and her house is pretty old. That ceiling fan was installed in the early 00's if I had to guess.

I've also seen extension cord ran as speaker wire when I installed home theaters.

I've recovered stolen motorcycles from tweakers, it's amazing how they can decide that a perfectly good wiring harness will be better with sections of extension cord and speaker wire spliced in with electrical tape.

Inspection found at least one outlet with open ground in this house we're looking at. It's a new outlet, so unclear if someone didn't properly secure ground at rear of receptacle, or if because it's 1-conductor wire (cloth) to the outlet. There was no mention of open neutrals, so not sure what to think.

They've disclosed multiple times there's no cloth after professional sparky came through and rewired everything. I confirmed by pulling permit from late last summer, there ws a full elec rewire of the place. It's apparent there's none coming off the only elec panel in the house. Also, definitely a couple of 2-prong vintage outlets to deal with.

    Oh, the joys of electricity.

Just wanted to say thank you for the wise wisdom. I just got my truck back after replacing the water pump kit, and both belts(timing & serpentine) were shot.
Thank you guys for the continuous warnings about the timing belt etc.

Buy yourself a good wire tracer/tone generator before ripping that horsehair plaster off the lath or poking holes and breaking out the borescope.

Already have one. I'll need it because I'll definitely be testing every outlet, and retrofitting standard outlets (with white faceplates, it's a mix of almond, yellowed, and white) and switches when we get the place. Sending up a care box in advance with all my dupe/spare tools, and quite a few low voltage/cabling tools so I can wire up the place and smarthome the shit outta it while I'm up there. I'll have 8 days to overhaul the entire place and have it fully prepared for winter, automation, alerts, power and internet failover, etc. Should be a fun challenege.
