Just put this up top and am questioning a mounting decision. Can someone with an engineering mind weigh in? I have it mounted to the prinsu with one mount on the cap, and one mount on the cab rack. I’m wondering if this is limiting flex of the bed and back half and potentially putting unnecessary stress by basically mounting these two pieces of the truck together. Or am I just overthinking it?

You aren’t wrong, the cab and bed are meant to flex independently of each other, it probably won’t cause any issues on the bed or cab, but it will put more stress on the tent and camper shell

    (also the truck looks great)

I would not be mounting the tent to the cab and the bed. I think it will break or bend something.

You could always add bed stiffeners to support the bed walls better.

Rubber strap type tie downs at the rear might be a good option with it sort of floating on pads mounted to the shell rack.

    Lots of stuff!
Looks like a good start but it might not be good for the tent or the canopy. Can you slide the tent back and add another cross bar to the canopy? Is it designed to carry that much plus weight?

I have been dealing with a leaky tent and it seems that any little tweak will allow the gasket to let water in. If you can avoid it, I would recommend keeping the tent as flat and stiff as possible.

Mount to one or the other, cab or bed. Mounting to both is going to break something when your bed flexes. Look at the gif and imagine all that torsion going into the tent mounts, tent frame, and all the mounting point of the truck.

Thanks for the advice! I have room to move the forward bracket to the cap. I was originally thinking it would give it more stability, but as I was driving today I starting thinking maybe that wasn’t ideal. Just didn’t want to move it till you all weighed in in case I was over thinking. Appreciate you all.

Most commercial racks rear mount is as far back on the bed as possible, and as far forward on the bed for the forward mount. The hangover above the cab is cantilever back to the bed.

Thanks all, re mounted one bar back and fully on the cap now. Much better, doesn’t feel as tight as before! Thanks for the quick responses all!

Got here late. I’ve had RTT for over a decade. Definitely over the cap on back and as far forward as you can will work best.
