Anyone ever drive away in their Tundra without the key FOB? Left the truck running and went inside the house. I somehow left the FOB inside and then went to run an errand.
I got a few houses away and realized I didn't have my FOB. Ford and I think dodge won't let you drive away with no keys.. dam Toyota and their trickery .

I took my friends Silverado, got about 3 miles away and he called me and said he forgot to take the fob out of his pocket and leave it in the truck, I turned around and went back and got the fob.:notsure:

My Ridgeline wouldn't let you. I wondered if this has anything to do with automatically shutting off the engine when the door is opened (remote start).

Nothing to do with remote start. I'll have my fishing partners park my truck at the boat launch while I still have the FOB. In those cases, remote start wasn't used.

Wife's Telluride is the same, start car with fob, leave fob in house, drive to work about 7 miles no problem. Call husband when car won't start after work, husband sees fob sitting on shelf and drives to wife's work. I too was surprised at this behavior and thought the car would only stay running for several hundred feet without the fob. Nope, joy riders get to drive around until they run out of gas or turn the car off. Seems silly and very poor programming for such high tech pieces of wonder.

LOL - yup, this past week, I had my son go with me in my Tundra to get my Bandit motorcycle that was at the shop for fluid changes maint, so I could drive it back from the shop - about 30 miles away... I jumped on the bike, and took off, and he followed me, but was a half mile behind me. I got about 3 miles down the road, when I realized I still had the fob in my pocket. I pulled over, and handed it to him... but he had no issues as he hadn't stopped the motor at that point. ;) He probably would have been fine all the way back to my place.

Thank you not so very much Toyota. This new tech stuff is not being tested very well.

The MID should tell you that the key is not detected.

They do this because if the battery is dead in the fob, you can still start the truck by placing it next to the start button. There is enough energy from the start button to energize the chip in the key fob.

So this isn't really on Toyota as much as you may be implying.

Ours does say "Key not detected" but it says that whenever you get out of the car with it running, to grab something from the house etc. Where it came to light for us, was we both drove in the Telluride to dinner, using the key in my pocket, drove back to work and I jumped out of the car and drove my truck home, while my wife simply switched sides and drove home, with no key!

I get it could possibly be a safety thing in that you wouldn't want the car just shutting off on you while on a busy road, but honestly it comes on with a "key not detected" warning, how hard to program it so it says "car will turn off in XX minutes" with increasing intensity like the irritating seat belt warning, more than enough time to realize you forgot your key, turn around and go back home, or pull over safely. If the fob battery is dead, as you mentioned there is the ability to still start the car, but that's because it knows the fob is present. But to just let the car be driven without a key till it's turned off is irresponsible. Keyless ignition should act just like a good old fashioned key, period.

The OP left the truck running to go inside the house to grab something. The MID would've said that as soon as it was put in gear.

The truck also turns off after an hour. You can tell it not to, but it will shut off.

The fob is no longer detected after you start the truck with it pressed to the start button. The battery is too low for it to be detected by the antennas in the truck.

They've done WAY more testing that anyone could possibly imagine, so there is ZERO excuse to drive off without the key.

    It's that simple.

My point isn't an owner driving off, that's on the owner, agreed. It's allowing a thief to drive off without the key present.

Apparently not consumer tested. As why there is so many complaints about some designs. So, you've never left something behind???

This issue is all software based and personally I believe a lot of programmers do not live in the real world, nor actually use what they write, and why we have such unfriendly, hard to use systems, when so often it is bloody obvious how to make something better, simpler, easier to use.

PS I am so not a software developer but have built a fair few database systems in my time with a degree of programming and logic required, plus my brother is a "system analyst" aka programmer so sort of have direct experience in this.

It seems pretty simple to me. If you're in an area where theft is likely, don't leave your truck unattended while it's running.

Ha, I leave mine running when in the field for the safety strobe light. I want a removable light especially for night work. I just need to find a fuse or a way to have the 12v work while truck is off

Be careful what you ask for. Do you really want a truck that shuts down when it cant detect the key FOB? What about when the battery fails in the FOB?

So the message on the display saying that "no key detected" isnt enough?

In the early '90's when the phenomenon of "car jacking" became a thing, I designed and manufactured a microprocessor controlled alarm/anti-theft anti car-jacking device that would sense a car jacking. The device would allow the car-jacker to steal the car and drive it a safe distance away from the victim, and then shut down the engine. It worked exactly as intended. It warned before shutting down. I couldn't care less where it shut down as long as it allowed the victim to give up the car and avoid further violence to himself. But investors did worry about potential liability so the project was not successful, litigious society.

My Jeep GC will annoyingly beep at you as soon as you step out of the SUV with the key in your pocket if it's still running. Even for a second. Drives my wife nuts. Start the Jeep, run back in the house for sunglasses etc. It beeps the whole time that the key has left the Jeep. I could see it doing that once you try to select a drive gear, but come on, it's parked!

Be realistic. How often do you look at the display as you take off. I watch it while I'm driving. It's like leaving the house and forgetting to button one button on your button up shirt. How do you think I knew only a few house down from my house did I realize I forgot my key. Duh!!!!

With modern technology and convenience, your brain is still required…
Today I grab my fob and stick it in my pocket, I don’t even have to look at it again because as long as it’s with me I can start my vehicle, unlock or lock the doors, drop the tailgate, etc.
Twenty years ago I would grab my key before leaving the house, stick my key in the truck door and unlock it. Then put the key in the ignition to start it… my tailgate had a lock, so if I wanted to I could keep it locked or unlocked.
Either with a key or fob I would never get out of my vehicle unattended and leave it running. That’s just a common sense thing for me. Nor would I leave my vehicle unattended and unlocked.

He didn't say in the video. Not sure if this device is like using relay boxes.

I think the device is a Flipper Zero. My research shows that it can detect the data to unlock a vehicle, and it can be used to start a small number of older vehicles. But it cannot be used to start modern vehicles that use encryption and rolling codes for their FOBs.

So if the vehicle was running from a remote start and the signal was caught the day before...wonder if it could be driven off after unlocking?
