Am I insane for considering paying 23K for a 05 DC?

here's something fr CL - OC.; if its honest and I needed a 4WD-DC, I'd offer $15k max.
On 1st glance, he may be OrigOwner, but in person meeting would tell more. Ive seen a few 'Licensed Dealers' [CA] who personally buy on the cheap and flipping. IE: No actual sales lot.
Re-reading the AD tells me he's likely a re-seller [priv or licensed].

    That sumbish is clean
    seat bases have been changed
wonder how somebody got that, has cleaned it up and put some work into it, and is selling at $12,900..... Must have got it dirt cheap somehow... Makes you wonder its story and history. That truck would be listed at $16,000+ anywhere else in the entire country, and in some places even more. If it was 4wd it would be listed at $20,000 or more
Either way, its nice lookin from the outside.

wow.. the 'jhorts' thing and even if AI'd, those are relatively recent pics. I risk getting flamed here, but this is one of those times Im embarrased for my age group.
Not quite in their age group [at least not by hair color], but I recall that even in my poorest college days ['Nam era] the 'better-off' kids on campus would sport the 'hippie-peasant' look while I was embarrased my Levi's were just thin at the knees.
Now a worn-torn thru knee is a merit badge. Not much has changed.

    ...anyways, back to FGTs...

Agreed, I wonder too. If it werent for size when parking, I could use a DC.
More could be ascertained w/a VIN and a CARFAX...at least you could see where [city-state] it spent its life..wouldnt touch it w/out a doc like Carfax.

Dirt cheap? Maybe lo KellyBook + his 'commision',...but gotta remember, 87 octane is $4/gal in CA, [if youre at Costco or cashpay at a few random stations] and lots of peeps might be seniors or empty-nesters, getting ready for retirement or anybody who drives so much theyre looking for hybrid rigs.
Cant blame them, 90% of my driving is a Corolla H-bk @41mpg, but its not worth a f--k towing a boat [however, I can get a half dozen trolling rods in it].
Also, So Cal is a huge automotive population and market. Then Add in Las Vegas and Phoenix areas and you have a mega-market SW US. If you cant find what you want here, it probly doesnt exist.

When I was looking for mine I looked at some of the used car lots and everything I saw was overprice
The starfish wheels are alloys and were an upgrade. Base models are the only ones I've seen that got the steel wheels and look the same as the spare.

yeah, I guess it depends on the local market; like I said, SoCal or SW cor of US: huge inventory.
Tho I cant prove it [someone else probly already has: AAA, NADA...], ⁸ 'Used Car Lot' biz is going thru the roof, especially w/new pricing and tariffs. Of course for 15-17mpg trucks like ours, I still think its a buyers market outhere; no matter what some of these re-sellers believe, sooner or later theyre gonna want these lo-mpg rigs gone. Only way their price hopes hold up is if we see a construction boom and small contractors want trucks w/out locking in to a lease or pricey loans.
BTW: Didnt know 'Starfish' are alloys and always thot they were the Base Level wheel.

EDIT: Used Car' biz [priv & dlr's] is going thru the roof...
I get solicitations every other week fr/2 local Toyota dealers inquiring about my '20 Corolla; also likely thats bait to get people to come in and browse their new cars...

23K seems quite high to me for this truck, but I did not research the market.

There is a place in the hollywood region of LA that specializes in import toyotas, they have hilux and land cruisers and stuff. I cant remember the name of it, they are off the road and tucked in behind something else. I was at another shop that happened to be next to them and saw all the land cruisers and 4door hilux behind their fence. I asked a local and they didnt even seem to know or care what it was but i suspect that place is getting them and turning them around to locals in the states.

Don't know... really don't care... point was the used truck market is pricey at this point and the cost of a well-maintained truck in very good shape is going to be much higher today than most of us are used to.

Most 'used car lots' are a different niche though... they are catering to a buyer 'in need' and generally don't have the cash or credit ability to be selective in their purchasing...

I tend to agree w/this...but doesnt mean you wont find a good subject, but price negotiabilty could be an obstacle. Private sellers likely more flexible on price since their interest is to get'er sold.
BTW: It looks like the above AD is fr/Fbook. Just my personal experience, but it always feels like Wild-Wild-West of a car shopping resource. A lot of useless info, with some very important info completely missing. Makes a simple shopping task feel like applying for a mortgage or employment. I almost tend to trust Fleabay more than Fbook, if for no other reason than a minimum of standard information required, like CL, a minimum standard is a rule.

Agree NJ is not to far in how expensive everything is. I have my Tundra and I commute mostly in a CRV I brought to save on fuel

The wheels, lift and stereo system that goes with it typically must be 90% of the selling price of the truck.

That lifted truck is in the hoooood, I know that area and it ain't good. The white truck isn't too bad for the money, it is 4x4 which hold more value. The red AC I posted is a pretty good deal considering mileage and condition. Ultimately, 23k for a 20 year old tundra is excessive and the 1st gen doesn't hold as much value as the taco's. 10-14k for a really clean 1st gen is realistic

Feeling better and better concerning my Tundra's price (and repair costs). :)

About $15,000 into her price and repairs. 2006 Double Cab with 4wd and 201,000 miles when bought last July from a mowing client who died 2 weeks later. 204,350 miles now.
