    2014 Tundra TRD
Recently I was doing a little maintenance on my 2014 Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L. Had to go to the dealer to get a few hoses and had an interesting conversation with the guy at the parts counter. He had 25 brand new engines sitting in the shop waiting to be swapped out with failed engines in the new generation Tundras. Several were getting their second engine replaced. Holy fuck what happened Toyota!!!?

I've seen the numbers and get the new generation has more torque and hp. That doesn't mean shit if the motor isn't holding up. As for gas mileage, it's not that great. A co-worker has a 2023 Tundra and he only gets 1 mpg better than my 2014. It's much worse when he tows his 24' pontoon boat. That is nothing to write home and brag about. He's already had his engine replaced once.

Tundra and Tacoma sales have taken a hit and the resale/trade-in values are taking a pretty substantial hit which is something Toyota has never faced. Tundra's and Tacoma's from the previous generation are holding their values pretty well. There is a lot of misinformation out there about emissions essentially forcing auto manufacturers to build smaller displacement engines. That is nonsense. What is really going on is the government has been giving cash incentives to auto manufacturers to build smaller displacement engines so in other words the auto manufacturers have been getting handouts from the government. Those incentives have recently stopped and the auto industry now has way more supply than demand. Prices still remain insanely high.

I was about to pull the trigger on a new Tundra until finding all of this out and it makes me sick. If I wanted to drive a piece of junk I would have bought a Volvo. Look at the legendary Land Cruiser....they ruined it! It's a pos turbo four cylinder. There is no way they will last near as long as the previous generation Land Cruisers.

For those that don't want an overly complicated platform stuffed to the gills with unnecessary technology you can still get a Nissan Frontier which has a naturally aspirated V6. They are not bad expensive and arguably a much better vehicle than the current generation Tacoma. Another possible option is the Honda Ridgeline which has a naturally aspirated V6. Ford, Chevy, and Dodge still make naturally aspirated V8's. The Chevy Silverado 2500 has a naturally aspirated V8 without the bs AFM and is not priced to the moon.

Dealers were taking advantage of their customers during the pandemic and now they have an abundance of metal they cannot move. Since when has Toyota slashed their prices and had Tundra's and Tacoma's sitting on their lots for six plus months? Add insult to injury they moved production to Mexico to slash labor costs by 80% and did not pass the savings onto the customer. You are now paying way over what the vehicle is worth for a substantially lower quality vehicle than the previous generation. For those that did pull the trigger on the new generation Tundra and Tacoma I hope you do not experience any engine and transmission failures.

He'd been building up to it for 2-1/2 years based on his joined date.
Epic rant though, gotta admit. o_O

Luckily we all have CHOICES. But do Not say Toyota is the only one with metal engine debris in the last few years. Think Kia Hyundai (replacing Theta II engines for free for over a decade now) and GM (plenty of 5.3 are shot right now which will take lots of time to correct them all).

To me it is more a symptom of poor training and Oversight. This is what Toyota used to be very very good at - not deviating from a process whatsoever. Luck all and Enjoy them Yotas.

He's all over the place in that post. He had Tacomas mentioned in the same sentence which are made in Mexico.
Also states prices remain insanely high, but later on says prices are slashed and dealers can't move inventory.

I pulled inventory numbers for the Tucson dealerships - 150 new Tundras and Tacomas sitting at Precision - another 100 at Desert Toyota. I see more discounts in the future.

Maybe time to upgrade to a Gen 3, or would that be a downgrade?

Looking at the topic, I thought this thread was going to be about my 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe.
With it's 2.3-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, it was like a motorcycle engine in a full-sized vehicle.
My one and only FORD purchase of my lifetime.

That is a lot for a city the size of Tucson. Are those actually on the lot? Or does that include"in production" orders?

I don't know, I only kept it for a year and traded it in for a 1988 GMC stepside pickup.

Looks like that's for every phase of vehicles allocated - in stock, in transit, and in production.

historically when I've looked there would be about 1/3 this amount in normal times, less when vehicles were scarce.

College buddy had the same Turbo T-Bird. That thing moved quite well.
He sold it with 150K on it, still running strong.

I had an '89 GMC 2WD shortbed 350/ 5 speed that I bought new. Great truck.
