Had mine a few days, now.

Checking fluid levels and find ATF in the transfer case? Just seems wrong.

You must be new (to 4x4s, and transfer cases, in general).

    Why does it seem wrong?

IIRC Jeep used ATF in transfer cases years ago and there are a number of manual transmissions that use ATF instead of your typical "gear oil", so it would seem logical that, if designed for it, the transfer case could use ATF instead of 75W or similar

Wait until you hear what some manufactures use in their power steering systems...

Seemed to me that gear cases needed higher viscosity.

Just checking with the experts, here.

Depends on the design of the "gear cases". Certain designs have smaller lubrication passageways, and synchronizers, which the specific properties of ATF are better for. It also dissipates heat better.

I had a Jeep CJ with a manual T-5 transmission that required ATF in the 1980's.
