2025 Tundra Engine is down!

Wallstreet has been pondering for 20 years why Ford can't solve their $5B a year in warranty work

I have made a lot of money on Ford over the years. Huge, embarrassing recall and other bad news drops to $8. People forget back to $12. Rinse and repeat. They never seem to get past the quality bugaboo

I am not pumping up Ford vehicles. Last Ford I had was 30 years ago that had the frequent brake issues. Which ever brand has issues I could get over it. What I could not get over was the Senior VP of Ford over customer engagement who was making 7 figures per the stock report in 1995 personally calling me to tell me to F off and Ford did not need my business anymore. He somehow was even able to find my unpublished work number for me that I never gave out to anyone which took some detective work.

But giving a legit warranty for major repair is what all makers should do no doubt

Look, I know y'all 3rd gen guys hate the message, and certainly the "messenger" in this thread, but the "get off my lawn" posts aren't as endearing as you think they are.

 

I was close to buying a third Ridgeline, a 2025 Black Edition (in white.) But 3 Ridgelines in a row? I didn't really leave Ridgeline behind. I just wanted to try a Tundra. I could wax on about all the virtues of the Ridgeline. It is a superb, balanced truck that overachieves in every meaningful way except emotional after 8 years of driving Ridgelines. If you are considering one, by all means do it. In all the years, only 2 minor annoyances, doesn't have a built-in trailer brake controller, and the headlights are so bright people flash their brights at you. Really, that's it. It is so clever in all the other ways, the trunk storage under the bed, the 2 way swing-out tailgate, the 9 speed ZF tranny with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, the dashboard design and center console, spacious interior, storage, true 4 wheel independent suspension, corners flat like a sports car. In truth it carries as much meaningful payload and passengers as Tundra, only half the tow rating but has no struggles with it, the transverse mounted engine is smooth, powerful and fuel efficient. The Tundra is quieter, has a more insulated feel from road noise, quieter passenger compartment, more refined/sophisticated in some details but far more bouncy over rough roads, washboard. Tundra may be slightly quicker, can't say with certainty but I wouldn't bet against the Ridgeline AWD taking it off the line and holding past its jump. Ridgeline tops electronically at 111 mph too. The Tundra has the panoramic sunroof, great for passenger touring, (mountains are tall afterall), and the full width opening rear glass is the cat's meow.

if you tow, forget about the Ridgeline

 

Its a unibody car with a bed, its literally a Pilot with a bed stuck on the back like an El Camino. All of the current model Hondas are WAY LOUDER than they should be, the road noise is terrible on most all of their cars for the past few years. The Accord Touring hybrid must have different sound deadening from a standard Accord, there is a significant and measurable difference between the two. But any standard Civic, Accord, CRV, ect, are all loud as crap. The road noise / tire noise is borderline deafening in comparison to what they used to be. When did that become acceptable?

Depends, the wife's CRV touring with its Michelins is very quiet but yeah agreed they are loud road noise for the most part.

 

Wonder if the rumored Nissan truck in Honda camo ends the Ridgeline. Honda could never get the looks right to be anything but a niche vehicle

I don't think Honda can sell enough of both.

I test drove a higher mid trim Pilot last year. Loud. The Pathfinder Platinum was cheaper and so much more peaceful.

 

I assume the "touring" models get different sound deadening. The Accord Touring is "virtually silent" compared to a standard Accord. The standard Accord is 75-78 decibels at 75mph on the highway. Its nuts loud.

 

Not sure, the Touring models are Honda's high-end trims similar to Acura. I am sure they care more about them since they come standard with BOSE speakers and more sound deadening. The BOSE system in the wife's CRV is loads better than the JBL and HK systems I have heard. BOSE systems have historically been hit and miss in maker branded vehicles.

 

Honda generally have always been crazy loud on the road in low or medium trims.

My mother in law has a late 2000s accord. It literally has no real gaskets in the rear door from the factory. The dealer said yep that is an LX for you. It is as loud as riding in a cement mixer at speed

 

Good thing we are making them on a 3rd generation board where they are a little more endearing...

Other than the few very low mile failures that were reported, has there been any failures of the recall swapped new engines, with the same main bearings going out? Time may be needed to accumulate miles I would think.

Until such engines start systematically failing, I say the problem is resolved. If they do start failing, it will suggest a design issue after all.

 

due to the complexity of the repair, I would say that info would be hard to determine, for the short blocks anyways.

the long blocks would be better to see that and Im not sure I remember a long block confirmed to have another bearing go out, but its early in the game.

2025s have failed.

The Recall Engine Assembly has not been reported to have failed at this point. The reason for mentioning 2025s is that they would be following the same procedure as the Recall Engine Assembly.

Take those pieces of information as you will.

Four possibilities: they improved it (lasts more miles still ultimately more fails than average), they fixed it, they neither fixed or improved it or they made it worse.

What if the new engine also comes with a new updated ECU reflash that changes timing and fuel trims that are actually the root cause of the problem?

 

Seems they would replace and/or reflash if that were the case, not replace 100k engines

 

For those of us interested in (and capable of comprehending) the shades of gray and not just black and white here: “Design Flaw” doesn’t guarantee 100% product failure. This is not a new concept. Plenty of adjunct components and other aspects of the design in general that can compensate for and overcome a design flaw.
What some of us are searching for is a tad more transparency from big T. Something which after spending any length of time on the internet I understand why they won’t.
