The new Taco has it's own problems.

Not a chance... After owning a 3rd gen Tacoma, and knowing the 4th gen has even less rear space, there's no way I could go to one.

And again, they have plenty of issues

You switched a self destructing engine for a self destructing transmission. If you trade in every couple of years or 80K, you’ll probably be OK.

A lot of our work/fleet Sierras are on transmission #2 by 80-100K (if we still have them). Sometimes we fix them, but we normally just cut our loses and sell/auction them off. Disposable trucks.

Yes, and the biggest among them is the outrageous MSRP on most of the trims. No wonder you can now get one below sticker in many areas. And there’s plenty on the lots too everywhere.

If it were completely bulletproof like Toyota's of legend then the price wouldn't be a problem. Even still, I'd say mechanical problems are a bigger concern than the price.

Yep, the 10 speed transmission valve body is the biggest issue I worry about with my Sierra 6.6 gas. I’m under no illusions about the Sierra, although it seems to be the best of the bunch right now for my needs. What’s different now is that Toyota offers no compelling reason to choose the new Tundra over the offerings from the big 3. Between the engine failures, the crap resale, the cop out warranty for owners with failed motors, meh, just not worth the trade off in capability anymore IMO. I paid about the same (within $1000) for my AT4 HD as I would have paid for the 3G Platinum I test drove.

I’m an every 6 years, 150K miles kind of buyer. I’ll be buying another new truck in about a year to replace the 2019 Tundra I still have. We will see how the Sierra holds up, as I tow and work my “personal” truck pretty regularly. My 2017 Tundra held up really well. The 2019 “work only” truck is holding up too and the 2019 lives a much tougher life. If I end up being aggravated with the Sierra, I’ll turn it in to the dedicated work truck and buy something else for myself.

lol, wut? last time I checked Carvana was around $46k for my truck which is a 23 with 28k miles on it. Still a lot better than a comparable 23 Ford or Chevy.

The resale value on Toyota out of the Big 3 trucks will be the highest among them all.

and how many 2019-2022 Tundra's are selling for 30-40k with 60-120k miles on them?

How many 2022-2024s are selling for north of 40k right now. A lot more than Ford and Chevrolet, out of all the Big 3 trucks. The Toyota Tundra holds it resell value better. You narrative doesn't hold water.

    I checked KBB.

F150 similarly equipped is worth $2k more than my Tundra.

From reading Tacoma world I wouldn’t say there’s been a crazy amount of problems on the new Tacoma.

The two major issues I’ve seen were the transmission, which got fixed early, and the brake line recall. Top hat failures seemed common too but seem to have died down.

Overall it seems to have been a much better launch than the Tundra.

The T24A seems to be off to a better start as well. Not Ryan says there have been some failures, but seems to be fewer of them. They can’t afford to screw up the T24A like they can the V35A. T24A goes into too many vehicles.

Ah I haven’t been keeping up with the LC forums. Those are Japanese built T24s then? If I remember right the Tacos T24s are from Alabama. Could be wrong though.

    Correct.

    4Runner - Japan Built T24A-FTS
Land Cruiser - Japan Built T24A-FTS
    Tacoma - TMMAL Built T24A-FTS

And not sure those Land Cruiser failures are in a forum. Those were confirmed by a service manager.

I wonder if that’s more a process thing then? Alabama has been building the T24s longer.

He has a 2500. At this point comparing a 2500 to a Tundra is Apples and Oranges in fact right now I would take the 6.6L 2500 GM truck over the current Tundra.

I’m not saying what you did was wrong. I’d rather have a transmission fail than an engine. For some people, GM’s make sense. IMO, it’s fine for folks who hold on under five years or 100k.

I’m in the crowd of drive till the wheels fall off and I want my vehicles past 300K. So that rules out a lot of vehicles. I also don’t need the latest tech.

Land Cruiser production started February 2024.
    Tacoma production started December 2023.

The process change from the 2GR to the T24 would've started months before. Same for whatever line they replaced in Japan. Pretty close.

Highlander was the first Toyota model to get it IIRC, didnt those T24s come from Alabama? Or were they imported? Timing of it all is fuzzy in my brain, lol. Been too long since I’ve looked at it all.

Granted it may be a V35A scenario where there are two different types.

edit: now I gotta go back and find it all. It’s driving me a bit crazy, lol.

    double edit: https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-alabama-powers-up-a-new-i-force-engine-line/
looks like the highlanders T24s would’ve been imported, so Japan was first to the T24s.

    triple edit:
    https://pressroom.toyota.com/new-toyota-production-line-boosts-hybrid-vehicle-capabilities/

Maybe they came from KY for the highlanders instead?

If that’s the case the order would be:
    1) Kentucky
    2) Japan
    3) Alabama

Compare prices for 2019-2021 Tundras to 2022+ Tundras. When I was looking for a new truck I seriously considered buying a low mileage, pristine 2020 or 2021. The 2.5 gens with more miles were selling for more than the 2022s and 2023s back then. Nice, low mileage 2.5 gens were selling for $50Kish, while comparably equipped 2022s and 2023s were a few to several thousand dollars less. Haven’t looked lately but I’d guess it’s the same.

You’re kidding yourself if you think the bean counters at Toyota are doing anything different with the motor recall of 2022s and early 2023s vs the non-recalled 2022 and 2023 Hybrids and all 2023+ trucks. Same game.
