Well unlike Toyota, Subaru put a 10 year unlimited mileage warranty on the EJ 25-- don't think Toyota would ever do that.

Anyone using a higher viscosity oil in their Tundra?

    Tundra is 389HP / 479lb-ft
    GX550 is 349HP / 479lb-ft
    LX600 is 409HP / 479lb-ft

I didn't know the GX and/or LX600 has a different turbo configuration... At the very least it is interesting to me that while HP varies by 60HP, torque values are identical across the three vehicles. It's unique to see an engine calibration that varies that drastically in HP but with identical torque

Because the V35A has Torque Management, (or whatever Toyota happens to call it) I can only assume those numbers are artificially (electronically) limited to a value that will preserve drivetrain life.

    Nope.

LX 600 and LX 700h are the exact same turbos as the Tundra. As @Mallcrl already mentioned, the LX 600 is tuned to 409HP on 91. The TRD Performance Package for the Tundra is the exact same tune as that of the LX 600. Peak torque is 400RPM sooner, just like the LX 600 has been from Day 1.

The engineers will say the GX 550 has smaller turbos, but not so sure that is the case.

TRD OR is rare in limited packages up, most people just go trd pro. A fully loaded platinum or capstone with trd or packages are 80 plus grand rigs.

That might be a regional thing. There were several options for me if I was willing to take one with a moon roof and wasn't as picky on colors. Wanting the limited without that was the challenge in my area, but there were several to choose from if I was willing to have glass overhead.

The spec'ed clearances on the V35A are pretty much the same as the 3UR. There are few very minute differences, but we're talking about differences out to the 3rd or 4th decimal place.

I’ve ran 87 in my gx 550, never heard pinging or felt a power difference. I’m sure the ecu adjust timing according to octane. Zero reason imo to run 93 in it since 91 isn’t really a think around me in the south.

$130k in vehicles and you're trying to save $11 at the pump using sub-standard gas? That's wild. The MPG difference will probably about cover the cost difference IME.

Not it normally gets 89 or 93, 91 isn’t a thing in the south at most places. A few times all I can get is 87. I live in bfe in SC haha. When it needs gas and a place only has 87, it gets 87. Like I said the ecu will pull timing, ain’t gunna hurt a thing.

Mileage is also the same. 87-89-93. Never saw a huge mileage difference. Nothing to do with cost all about availability. Regular gas is like 2.45 a gallon. 93 is like 3.75. If they only have 93 I will fill it for the wife with 93.

guess I could do the ol redneck and pump half 93 half 89 haha.

Yes, but OTOH I waited 3 years for Toyota to manufacture a Tundra motor that doesn’t eat bearings. Up until about 4 months ago, I hadn’t even considered buying anything else from any other manufacturer. But when the 2024s started failing, continuing the same failures that have been going on for 6 years (now 7 years as the 2025s are going down) with this motor, I decided to roll the dice on GMC betting it will hold up better than the 3G Tundra all while offering more capability. Am I right? I’ll let you know in about 5 years. But as I keep saying, I won’t be rocking myself to sleep blaming faceless strangers on the interwebs if my Sierra ends up having a defective motor. I’ll just look in the mirror like a big boy and admit I got screwed by a car company. It happens. You can only learn from experience. GMC is a gamble for sure. My decision to change brands is something that should be troubling to Toyota, as I’m far from the only long term Toyota fan boy to jump ship. And honestly, if the Sierra treats me right, there’s a good chance I’ll go grab another one in about 18 months when it comes time to retire my 2019 Tundra.

It’s not your fault, son. Although I see you’ve only been here since 2023 so you never experienced the glory days of Toyota truck powertrains. I did. Man, those were the days!

Toyota is giving customers a 12 month 12K mile parts warranty on the crate motors and short blocks for trucks that fail in the warranty period. Not confidence inspiring. Hyundai gave owners lifetime warranties on their defective engines. Subaru evidently has enough confidence in their WRX motors to offer 10 years unlimited miles. I wonder what it is about the 3.4 production or design would make Toyota so hesitant to stand behind it?

the issue isn’t knock related to timing, where the computer will pull timing.
It’s the pre ignition conditions with a fuel mix, hot combustion chamber and vaporized oil particles (which combust) in the cylinder prior to the power stroke.
    Low Speed Pre Ignition LSPI.

having a fuel and oil combination that is as resistant to pre detonation and resists being aerosolized inside the hot combustion chamber is the goal here.

knock and LSPI are not the same.

Haven't visited the subject in a while. I see that he Gen 2 guys are still aggrieved with the Gen 3 issues.
Are there any updates on what failure percentages are? I was at the dealer and they had none in for replacements but 3 scheduled.

Had to hunt for mine in that combo as well.
Same here. Moonroofs were easy in Limiteds when I was looking in the Midwest. Definitely in the majority.
It was getting the other 3 packages and TRD O/R combined that was harder to find.
