Am I insane for considering paying 23K for a 05 DC?

5,000 one way or another wouldn't be enough to get me to sell a vehicle I am confident in, or be willing to adopt someone elses' headache for is all I'm saying.

That's about what I paid for my 2001 new 24 years ago. Things (prices) are out of whack. It can't be sustainable for most people. The middle class is shrinking and that's what built America in the post war (WW2) years. Sorry for the narrative. Back on topic I think it's a wee bit too much.

I was curious one day, and took a tape measure to my stock '06 Tundra. Interior measurements are same +/- 1/2" as 2018 GMC crew cab 4x4 company truck I drive, BUT the Tundra has several inches more ground clearance, and is taller.

True about towing, and power being more. Size is the same though.

I've definitely been thinking long and hard about it over the years, but the right buy just hasn't come along yet.

Let me know what you want when you’re ready. Spoiler, the 993 price is going up in a year or so.

I enjoyed my '11 work truck, except that 4.6 in it. I'm still on the hunt for a 2nd gen DC, 5.7, 4wd, bench seat with vinyl interior. I don't think it exists. The I could load mine on a trailers and have 2 tundras in Sedona. 2TTS.

I used to think the same thing until I started adding up some costs.

I purchased a 2002 HO 2500 CTD truck with 90k on it. 12k from a buddy and drove it home from southern Alabama. Owned the truck for 4 years. It didn't cost me the average every month, and sometimes it seemed I could go 2-4 months without an issue and then bam! 1-4K in repairs.

All said and done, that truck averaged out to 619.00 per month during the 48 months I owned it and how I came to buying my Tundra. That truck cost me 150.00 in the 4 years I owned it due to the CPO warranty/Toyota care. Manor things replaced wheel bearing and front differential by 60k miles. I owned it since 4004 miles and sold it with 89k miles.

Same with my current GMC. I had two warranty claims. First was a rear speed sensor that failed under 2000 miles since it was damaged by snow/ice. Next one was the DEF tank heater around 75k miles.
This past weekend I had my second part failure. Air Intake Temp sensor #1 started to fail. It didn't put me on the side of the road, but did run my grid heater and the truck was less efficient. 70.00. I'm now at 126k miles. First part failure was a Neural Safety switch inside the Allison transmission. That was 125.00 and my time.

I'm pretty happy about under 200.00 for failed parts in 9 years.

It would not be wise to buy a 20+ year old truck if you pay shop labor rates. But these dont take very many tools, and can be diagnosed without a $10k computer.

I think that's the ticket here. Anyone who buys a classic car or near-classic has to have both the time and a strong DIY ethic OR be comfortable spending the money to pay someone else to do so. And if you're in the latter category, and you bought a $20k classic or near-classic and plan to pay someone a few thousand dollars every few years for non-minor things, and mentally you're comfortable spending up to $30-35k for the truck over the next few years, you're still in it cheaper than a new truck, so if you like the older truck more, why not? But then there are the appraisal/insurance/replacement cost issues others have mentioned that affect all classic car owners. I personally think our trucks are great for most things most people do with trucks, so if you love our First Gen trucks and have the time and skills or the money to buy those, psh.....welcome aboard.

I still have to do the math every time I hear someone refer to our trucks as classics or near-classics. When I bought my 2000 FGT in 2006, it was not a classic and I never for a second imagined that I would still be owning it 19 years later, but here we are. Now, I can't see myself without it. My truck is a part of the family. I met my wife in that truck, went on our honeymoon in that truck, brought all of our kids home from the hospital in that truck. She's the best transportation decision that I have ever made. The fun thing is, I paid $6k for the truck and have maybe put $10k in parts and maintenance in it over the past 19 years. So, I have 19 years of memories and $16k invested into a vehicle that is only increasing in private party valve. Winner winner chicken dinner.

I'm with @shifty` on this one; I'd cut mine loose for that kind of money. Not sure what I'd replace it with, probably a single cab 5.7 designated to truck duties. Finding a 4WD with decent miles in this config is tough, more so when looking for a 2014+ model...

Yeah, and we both have roughly same miles and options too, and level of non-molestation (I mean, I have suspension but it's nothing that couldn't be reverted easily, I didn't hack anything).

BTW, I'll roll over 82,700 miles this week.

Idk if I would or could let my truck go. I was in the hunt for a decent 2nd gen for my father we traveled quite a bit and could not find a decent one under 20k the one he ended up buying he paid about 18 k for a crewmax 2013 with 100k and he sold it less then a year had to many issues (frame) He now drives a 08 with 200k that he brought for 9k which was one owner and dealer serviced. Finding a well serviced truck is not that easy anymore.

I really would not sell mine for $20k. And it isn't that special. Definitely very clean rust wise (like none at all) and paint wise (still shiny and no clearcoat peeling at all). Does have a couple of minor parking door dings, but that's it.
Brakes are newish, LBJ, Radiator, TBK all done. Fluids are good. I checked spark plugs and they looked great. If I took that 20k and dropped it on a different truck, it's going to come with some kind of problem. Mine I know things have been addressed. When it cools down, I might replace the bushing at the bottom of the steering column, but it's not essential or urgent. That's the only thing on mine that needs doing right now.

That's the thing with older vehicles. You cannot really just go off KBB. Condition is everything. And I chose the Gen 1 over the Gen 2 because I really liked the look better (I actually owned a Gen 2 4.7 for a couple of years from new. I liked it but I like this Gen 1 better).

I had a 2010 access cab (or whatever the half cab is called in that year) 2wd. I really loved that 5.7. Loved it. Didn't love the body style, but whatever. But then I went back to school and needed a commuter corolla. Sold my BIL the 2010 and had a corolla for 4-5 years. When I was back in the market for a truck in Spring 2023, I needed a full back seat for kiddos and wanted 4wd. I would have loved a 2018 or 2019, but just couldn't swing it moneywise. I never knew anything about 1GTs until then and just kinda stumbled upon the folklore of how great they are. A 1GT was way more affordable and I knew I'd have better odds working on it myself, which is something I really wanted to learn how to do. They're both great trucks, I'd take either in the end.

That exactly what am saying. I already done most if not all maintenance and ready for the next 100k selling and trying to replace it in this current market would not be easy. Originally I was looking for a 2nd gen and stumble on my 1st gen and I dnt not regret it.

Crazy to think that in some states, you could register your truck as a "classic" vehicle and get historic plates for it.
