Rear Charger Mod

I know this is a super easy addition, but damn if it isn’t absolutely necessary and satisfying.

Super easy.

Lift the lid to the console, put fingers on top edge of back piece of the console, lightly squeeze in and pull back.

Disconnect the cigarette lighter. Remove the three bolts holding the panel the lighter is in.

Some tiny plastic tabs holding the lighter into the panel, you’ll see them. I used a pick to press them.

Once the lighter is out, use a step drill bit to slightly increase the size of the hole, put the charger in.

Back to wires, snip of the connector, strip & crimp two female spade connectors & reattach the panel using the three bolts.

Now the pop the back panel back on. Might want to lubricate the console lid spring and hinges while the panel is off. I did.

the lettering lights up a normal white, like the rest of the buttons on the truck, and it has a big rubber cover to hide/protect it while you aren't using it.

mine showed up and the port is orange instead of green, but the lettering is indeed white.

I like that one too.

The one I used has the same cover, it’s for marine applications, I just didn’t want the cover on there, would look similar if I left the cover on.

I like that this one has a button to turn it on & off too, lights go off when it’s turned off.

I looked at the one you posted too, it was my other choice.

 

they're all basically the same thing on the inside, all of them are made in China, I just know I didn't want a bright blue thing blinding me while I drove at night, since I replaced all 4 ports (2 below the radio, one in the center storage, and one in the back seat center console). and I have two small kids so the last thing I need is them shoving something into the port in the back seat and blowing a fuse.

here's mine with the power on (turns on with accessory/ignition like the rest of the stuff). also above I said white, but it's actually a pale blue like the rest of the OEM buttons (which are blue, not white, at least in my truck).

 

and not to hijack the thread but if you guys want to get crazy with USB, you could get a mountable metal hub and install it in the glovebox, so you can connect it to the 14v DC power AND to the car stereo system for data read/write. I did this in my Tacoma with a custom Linux-powered headunit so I could use the plug-in Android Auto and also have a USB memory stick with a bunch of MP3s on it and a USB plug-in GPS device.

That’s lights on that one are definitely more appealing, since mine is in the rear I wasn’t concerned & the kid likes the blue

Would literally take me seconds to swap to a different one now, which is nice.

That double panel looks awesome! Wish I had seen it first! I’d keep the 12v and add the piece I did.

 

I went with the NSV usb outlet a couple of years back for the OEM look.

 

Added an extra along side oem plug. 3d printed plate.

 

Just did mine yesterday. Game changer for the kids in the back on road trips!
