What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Hopefully thats how they send my replacement. They said it was on back order of course. Still haven't seen any updates on it yet

 

It was time to give her a little coat of wax. Going to have to remove rear shell soon.

 

When I installed a cabin air filter a few weeks ago, I had the blower off the truck overnight and it rained. Next morning I found small puddle of water on the passenger floor mat. I reviewed the water leaks thread. Not sure I needed to do this, but I bought new clips (need 8) that take screws and sealed them using butyl rubber rope that I had already and smashed into a gasket. My old clips (that secure the posterior edge by the windshield) were in good shape but the original foam seals were crumbling or gone. I also bought clips (need 6) that secure the anterior edge of closest to the engine and under the hood. I don't think I needed to actually replace all of the clips but why not. There was a lot of grime and dirt so this was a good time to clean that area.

 

Also, I cleaned out the pocket behind the splash guard inside each of the front doors. The driver side had very little debris but the passenger side had a full handful of leaves, pine needles, and dirt. I pulled most of it out and then used my shopvac to remove the rest. I could imagine this leading to corrosion if wet plant material stays stuck in there.

Edit: I now realize this photo is of my GX. I didn't take a photo of the Tundra clean out, but this mess in the GX is what inspired me to check.

 

Finally made it to Oceano Dunes for some camping on the beach. Had a good time cruising around the dunes a bit, playing with my RC car and wading in the water.

Got to pull a SXS out as well who got high centered on a dune. For some reason none of his wheels were turning so put it in neutral and pulled him out. They struggled for awhile but eventually got it working again.

Nice! I still haven't done mine yet. I ordered and received the parts already but it has rained several times since I noticed pooling in my passenger footwell the one time and I haven't had seen anything since then. Maybe didn't close the passenger door all the way or something??? A bit puzzled by it, but at least if I do notice it again I'll have everything ready to go. I was going to use silicone waterproof seal on it, but heard that's not a good idea since it can promote rust directly on metal so I'll probably do what you did.

Don't think I gave full context on the smog issue with the Taco. My Dad goes to a local guy that charges $30 over the market rate, but gives $5 off if you pay cash. He and the guy are very friendly, but it's just a business relationship and 'supporting local business'. I stopped going there years ago because I don't think a friendly conversation while you wait is worth the extra $30.

Anyways, he went to get smogged originally and had just disconnected his battery so the monitors weren't ready. He went back again and the smog guy said he passed. My dad didn't look at the paperwork, instead he got a notice from the DMV saying his registration is on hold until he passes smog. Turns out the paperwork says he failed and the smog guy didn't catch it because they were too busy talking.

New O2 sensors on the Taco fixed it where the O2 monitor is now complete. It should pass smog, everything is complete now except the evap monitor which you can pass with incomplete here. O2 sensor job on the Taco is 1/10 on every sensor except the passenger's upstream which is a 3/10, at least the first time you do the job. Nice that all four use a bung instead of bolts.

The local smog guy isn't answering calls right now, but have a feeling my Dad may have to pay someone else to smog him now he'll actually pass.

 

Emission? What’s that? They stopped doing that on my truck 8 years ago.

 

I've never smogged mine. Not even when I lived in California. It's been tagged in Arkansas since I've owned it, but started life as a California truck.

I managed to remove my overload leafs from the rear and replaced the power steering pressure hose that had a small leak in it.
Removing the overload lowered me about 1/2 to 3/4 an inch and definitely helped with the topping out issue I was having. Ride is so much smoother and I like not having so much rake. Sits a lot more level. So far I still haven't bottomed out my front coilovers so I may try dropping them down another couple turns to make sure I have full range of suspension.I also have some perry parts bumpstops to install soon.

Got it. It sounds like you've already taken the heads off, you can't really mill/deck things to resolve warpage.

The symptoms I just quoted though, it was my main reason for asking. We've seen similar with something as stupid as a bad radiator cap, thermostat has the jiggle valve set at 6 o'clock instead of 11-1 o'clock, air in the system, any number of things. It would be super unusual for it to have anything to do with the heads.

Head gaskets don't have issues on the 2UZ-FE in these trucks very often.

Good luck! Assemble per the FSM. One guy on here bought a truck from a mechanic and it tossed a rod, bent a valve, or some stupid shit because the mechanic - a pro, and I think a Toyota guy at that - failed to adhere to specific steps when installing.

Honestly, as soon as I found anything was warped, I'd have repurposed the block as a coffee table or boat anchor, and swapped in a donor engine.

 

I think leaving the foam on there was a mistake. You'd get a better seal with the butyl touching fully both surfaces you want to seal.

 

Just passed my last Ga emissions last week; moved up to Dade county (Ga) where they aren’t required!

I debated that. I ended up using a good amount butyl rubber for the seal but included the foam to try to keep it out of the hole. I may end up regretting this decision. I'll let everyone know if there is an issue.

 

Yeah, two of my gearhead buddies are both from Albany. They hated moving up here (both moved here for work), having to do emissions. One of them has been in Sunnyvale working for Google for the last damn-near decade now. I lost contact with the other, but I don't think he's as heavily into cars as he once was. I was just sweating it on the way there. I've got this stupidass knock sensor code that only pops when it's cold out, within the first 1-2 miles of driving from a cold start (and only occasionally at that), and only when it's chilly out really. So far (knock on wood) it hasn't struck while I'm on my way to the emissions place.

I legitimately don't think it's a bad sensor, or an actual knock (it's a "circuit high" code, P0328), I think there's a problem with the harness, or one of the connectors not being fully inserted into the harness, or something similarly stupid. I just don't want to pop off the intake to find out, when I can reset the code, and it goes away for weeks/months at a time.

 

Today I READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL and figured out (I think I figured this out) that when I turn on the rear window defroster, it also turns on side mirror defrosters.

Side mirror defrosters? PRETTY NEAT ACCESSORY TO HAVE (if that's what I have).

 

My 06 has the side mirror defrost, but I'm an AC, so no rear window defrost. But I do have the electric slider rear window. Not quite as cool as the DC roll down rear window... now that I know those have defrost I'm even more jealous! haha

 

The manual seemed a bit confusing on that point, but yes, if the side mirrors defrost, that's pretty neat. I don't plan on driving the Tundra in the WV winter salt though, hope to park it in the mower garage for winter. It gets frosty in fall though, when we (soon) hope to be doing big leaf cleanups.

The roll down rear window is pretty neat. Seems like a great way to vent the vehicle. Air in via the fans, air out the back window.

 

I mostly use my heated mirrors when I hop in the truck during heavy fog/humidity mornings.

Elpaso was sketchy as frig. Stopped for gas & had to buy 88 octane, then had folks trying to peek in my truck while getting food truck tacos. Eff elpaso. I’m taking the bypass through the franklin mnts everytime from now on, out of spite. I was hassled when i was pulling the pop-up, too. Fuck em & feed em fish heads.

 

We won't be doing big leaf cleanups this fall but we'll be out doing something this fall I'm sure. Should get a chance to test the mirror defrost.
