I've owned mine since 2013, but rode passenger in it on the way home when it rolled new off the lot. Prior to that, it was my father's. Mostly lurked on the forums prior to 2020ish.

I'm on (at least) year 6 of ownership, but lurked on the forum for a solid year before posting. I think I visited 4-5 months before buying reading up on what I'm getting myself into, and got about 6-7 months of work in before signing up to participate? I think I took a break on year 1 or 2 here at the forum, life was a little too hectic at the time.

My first post in this thread was 5 years and 16 days ago, to the day: https://www.tundras.com/threads/lets-see-your-first-gen-photo-thread.21/page-66#post-1821749

Still in fully functional condition and looking better than ever. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have another vehicle, and would probably sell my truck for the right price if it'd allow me to get, like, an emissions-exempt Tacoma and a mid-2000s LS430, that way I could have one truck for work/fishing/hiking, and another car for road trips and leisure, but ... I don't see that happening any time soon (although an LS430 or Corolla HB may be in the not-so-distant future...)

Why would you have to choose between your family and your truck. It’s not some $100k purchase, or some wasted selfish thing. It’s a truck. Transportation and utility. And a bargain at that.

she's just afraid it will break down...... I dont think it will. and with how expensive modern trucks are, if it did break down, i'd still be in the green, not the black.

Doesn't he have like 3 or 4 trucks?
Who needs kids, when your trucks take all your money? :p:D

At least that's how I feel with just 2 trucks.

Even if it breaks down (which is not the norm for these trucks), it'll still be worth what you'd pay for it, I reckon.

You know, I've thought about this and I like to compare it to fixing people. Cause all vehicle require maintenance, but...

Doing maintenance on a 1GT is like a pro athlete doing PT.

Doing maintenance on other cars is like putting an unhealthy 90 year old on oxygen.

I just watched a great video on old cars and maintenance - I'll try and link it here....gernally saying it's easier to work on and mod on old cars, than any new car today. sure newer cars today have conveniences but you can't mod them without spending a boat load. https://youtu.be/HAf4BZwyBeo?si=s5rpzoM3qckhhkCG

I just dropped 2500 on repairs for mine. Bought new, sold to a friend sometime near 2010 and bought back in 2020 ish or 2021, I could look it up. Then a full year of refresh, maybe a year and a half really.

I would not sell mine for 25k. Maybe 50 but nobody would pay that. I still have things to do on this one, just getting started. If I could figure out a flatbed + kid gaming pod attachment, it would be utopia on wheels. Hope to finish the 7 pin and Gentex harnesses this weekend.

LBJ’s are a bit of a bummer, just replaced them the second time since repurchase. If there is a third maybe I go new LCA’s and sell the small ball ones for the ‘04+ big balls? I dunno why these seem to be such a bugger but I do not want that failing on me. Also the brakes were trashed apparently so new rotors, pads and drum clean outs. Upside is I found a local shop I trust and I can leverage for the future plus warranty and close enough to easily run / ride back from. The dealer has been getting ridiculous lately so I’m happy to just wean off from them long term.

I do have 3 trucks and two sons. I want a Sienna, T4R, hiace and gr ‘rolla. And a 2.5 gen Tundra too. The sienna might actually happen someday but is entirely unnecessary. The hiace would be cooler for people moving.

If I ever have a spare 30k I hope to EV swap the ‘05 as a custom hybrid, rocket off the line or put around in town with EV front axles and brake regen then cruise the 4 banger on the freeway for long road trips and never worry about range/charging. For now it’s scheduled to be the drivers Ed vehicle, crank windows, no tech beyond intermittent wipers, clutch start / cancel and AC. Maybe I’ll do fog lamps. Maybe. And if I actually retired, perhaps keyless entry.

Tundra has RS3000 and integrated fob. Even w separate antenna wire the range still sucks if you press too soon compared to the ‘16 Tacoma.

    image.jpg

Prior comments were angled at the ‘05 Tacoma which has no power accessories and would be a bunch of new parts, I’d probably go aftermarket and I think I even have a kit in a bin somewhere.

I wish someone had a plug and play range extender for RS3000.

Dave your truck looks great. I'm jealous of your moon mist interior and Legos.
Interesting choice though. Can't say I'd have picked the Tajma Hall

Got it fairly cheap and seemed like a good pick for my 10 y/o’s birthday this week. I’ve never seen it. Eiffel Tower is next.

I've got 336k on mine and drive to AZ once a year and beat on it offroad. With minimal maintenance at that. This is the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.

I'd argue the 1st gens are more reliable than the 3rd gens right now. There are still some people with 2025's having engines go. It doesn't seem like they have completely fixed that issue.

I was trying to find this random parking lot photo from head-on for some reason about a month ago, and I came up short. I swore I posted it before but didn't manage to strum it up with searches.

Didn't realize you had a sunroof, jealous! I'm pretty sure that's the only option my truck doesn't have besides the TRD package.

I don't use it often but definitely appreciate having it during the shoulder seasons. I might feel differently about if there were issues so many people in general complain about sunroofs but I've never had a mechanical problem or leaks. I should probably grease the tracks and snake the drains before my luck runs out though.
