So my last question with the topper for y’all who have one. I’ve never had one and I don’t see myself wanting it on all the time. Is it reasonable to think it could be taken off and put back on once every 6 months? Or is it stupid to consider a hard top shell for this situation. Is a softopper a better idea? Now that I’m getting into this I’m realizing I hadn’t really thought about things like wiring the brake light, getting the peripheral sealed, etc.

Side note - as I look at members who have them, I’ve noticed I really like how some look a lot and then others are just ugly. Particularly @PNW15 , @jerryallday , @des2mtn , @FirstGenVol all look great. The one I’m eyeing looks a little more grandpaish.

if you have help, they can come on/off pretty quick, and easy. Mine is really too heavy to comfortably handle by myself unless i use a hoist.

I don't think it's unreasonable to take it off once every 6 months or so, especially if you have another person to help. Brake light and wiring can all be put on simple quick release connectors, that's how mine came.

My truck has had it's cap installed since 2010 and has never came off since, even though I occasionally think of taking off just for funnies. I have an overhead winch in my garage, and I've always thought that I could use it to get the cap off. I could take a piece of plywood and slip it in-between the cap and bed rails, then hoist up the plywood and drive the truck out from underneath it. You could do the same sort of thing with plywood by putting it on wood cribbing or with high-profile transmission jacks, that way the cap is six inches or so above the bed and you can just back right up under it when you want it back on.

Fun fact, not sure if still true, but the movie, at the time of release, used more fake blood than any other horror movie ever made. Crazy Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings movie franchise director) directed it!

If you have a way to lift/hoist it off (there are tons of examples), it's totally reasonable to install/uninstall by yourself. If your garage ceilings are high enough to hold it over your vehicle, bonus! Otherwise you'll need a hand every time you take it off, and you need to be careful not to drop it or smack it into shit, lest you'll crack the fiberglass. Also, note that that cap may be coated with something and not truly paint-matched. Which may or may not bother you, but depending on the linking, it may actually hold more heat than regular auto paint (looks almost like bedliner type application). But generally speaking, I'd advise you to stick with a brand that's still producing caps for our trucks (Leer, SnugTop), and something that fits a bit better to the edge of the rail to avoid leaks. They're out there!

Be careful though, in how you store it, the lower sides will flare out and make the back door fit incorrectly, and leaving it on the ground or in a high-moisture area will rot out the fiberglass.

Right, just important to note, the body in majority isn't required to listen to that long-standing parlaimentarian person, though that's the norm dating back for eons, it isn't mandatory. There's been a strong push internally to either ignore the parlaimentarian's input totally for the final piece in this case (since it's not legally required to adhere), or just fire that person and not re-fill that position until things they want get done (or re-fill with a yes-man type) so this won't happen again with future endeavors where inappropriate stuff will be slid in craftily. And you must also expect that, at 1,000 pages, the same kind of people who'd either ignore and/or fire someone in an auditor/procedural/watchdog role, which would be unscrupulous as hell, would also be willing to slide such a thing back in, and hope it goes unnoticed.

 

I had one on my GMC for couple years. As long as you have help it’s not bad to get off.

If you are on road traveling they’re ok. I didn’t like them getting off road due to hindering visibility, especially at night with no light (kind of like trying to maneuver at night with dark tinted windows ) but if you’re in open areas, and you have light from street lights, or light bars it’s not so bad.

I’d love to have a collapsible soft topper though.

 

I've had caps on 3 of the 4 trucks I've owned. I've purchased 2, and one came with it.

I've grown up with them and have always used them for camping, storage, what have you, and I rarely need things taller than my caps allow but continue to sleep and Basecamp out of my truck for more mountain sports. Typically only 1-2 night at a time at a trailhead in preparation for backcountry shit.

Mine never come off. My Silverado took 8 years to leak, my Tacoma took 8 days, and I never could re-seal it well enough to stop the leaks. Screw that thing, just thinking about it makes me mad.

I think of canopies as not water tight, so keep that in mind. Some are worse than others.

I'm not sure if the bulkhead of the 1GT is level with the bed rails, but if it is, that's good news, makes for an easier seal.

If you take it on and off, prepare to re-prep the seals and possibly re-do since I don't think they like to come on and off in that regard. That being said, you'll have the opportunity because well... It's off.

They all let in dust around the tailgate too, but depending on how creative you get... Could mitigate.

I'm getting a little bit past the age of living out of my truck for weeks at a time, and I think I'm outgrowing shell life. So my enthusiasm is waning. I'm gravitating towards a slide in line and FWC, or maybe a small composite. When it's out, I would enjoy the open bed, but I would also miss the storage in bad weather, skiing, biking, just one nights sleep while traveling light and not wanting an full camper.

Oh, and all three of mine have had tracks for crossbars. I find roof boxes useful for extended trips.

If I had to buy another shell, I would heavily consider a soft topper instead at this point in my life. If not for cost, just for commitment, it seems lower. I wish I had an elegant way to store shells, but realistically I wouldn't have taken any of these off until the Tundra and even then, no need yet.

As others have said, wiring should be easy. Maybe @daveeasa would hook you up with some connectors if you ask nice enough.

I guess I would just think of what are you trying to protect/keep dry/shelter? How often and how will that convince stack up against removing/adding and storing a cap?

There are people that build pulley systems in their garage for this exact situation.

Found out I don’t need the steel ramps for lift. Two 2x8 boards stacked on top of one another is enough for me to slide under and spray down the O2 sensors with rust penetrant.
