From seeing the wear on those cylinder walls I guess it is possible, the one who posted video of noises it was making, it very well could be piston slap.

To have any engines failing four years into a model generation is unacceptable.

If the issue was limited to a specific lot due to a supplier issue and rectified under warranty, I can almost understand the position of some apologists. This doesn’t seem to be the case. This engine has been plagued with problems since inception. It is not acceptable from Toyota, or any other manufacturer.

    Additional update on my situation...

After more phone calls and voicemails than I would like to try to keep track of, I finally got ahold of the service manager this afternoon to get the update that Toyota authorized a short block to be ordered, and that a loaner would be available tomorrow morning for me. Unable to give an ETA on the short block until Monday.

I'll be back in touch with Toyota's brand engagement center in the morning to see about other options; I've also started a claim with NCDS. I've now been without my truck for 33% of the time I had it :monocle:

National Center for Dispute Settlement... Basically a company that advocates for consumers to automotive companies. It was suggested to me by a friend of a friend who had a motor go on his Sequoia TRD Pro @ 10k miles and in the end Toyota replaced the vehicle instead of just the short block.

Oh, very nice. I hope you get a new rig! I certainly wouldn't trust one after it tanked like that. It sucks to see this has happened, but I am curious if they'll share any details on what actually killed it.

I don't believe any details will come from the dealer unfortunately, it has been hell just to get little bits and pieces of answers... Not to mention calling from different phone numbers to get people to answer the phone there.

If I could just get a phone call with the regional dealer technical rep that was out there, I'd be more comfortable, but I understand that those positions aren't customer facing (I have a number of friends who are in that role for other manufacturers)

    Short block?
I'd want to know more about what happened to the motor before I would accept that.
Id be asking what is was, and how they are going to insure nothing from the engine failure (metal shavings etc) got into the system.
There are plenty of oil ports in the cylinder heads, what about something getting into the turbos etc, etc.

I wouldn't put together an engine that has oil ports/channels in the head that had rods knocking, or piston slap without them all being dissembled and cleaned.
    That's just me though.

The thing I remember from that video was how diminutive that 3.4L actually is. If I didn't know where it came from and you told me it came out of a Polaris Slingshot, I would have thought, "looks about right".

[QUOTE="WindChillYeti75, post: 3965323, member: 128787" This current gen tundra is leaps and bounds in capability above the last gen. The powertrain is more suited for truck duty as it makes its power lower in the rpm band which is what you want for towing and hauling. This gen can tow more, haul more, and is a much more comfortable and quiet ride.[/QUOTE]
Those of us that spend most our time under load are far more concerned about the costs associated with maintenance, downtime, and lifespan than we are how well it takes off the line. For a big NA gasoline engine(for a halfton), the 5.7L actually has very good low end numbers that it produces with very low stress and heat.

For the type of "capability" your referencing, Toyota was making stock forced induction 5.7s almost 2 decades ago that put out 500 HP and 550 torque. With the 4.3 rear axle vs the 3rd gens 3.4L and a 3.21, it ain't even close.

What difference does that make, it’s been dead for years, it’s over and done with, Toyota made the decision for us, we have to get over the damn 5.7. It was great and is great in the older trucks, but it’s not coming back .

Just my .02, As much as I personally liked the 5.7, it seems underpowered now compared to driving this and pulling with this.

Also, Just a note, you can’t just look at the rear end ratio and act like it’s such a massive difference, trans ratios are in there too and 10 clogs will keep it in the torque peak longer.

In addition, it's completely an apples to bacon comparison when you're talking about gearing a NA vs FI engine. You don't need (or want) to gear a FI engine to the moon. It's counter-productive.
It would be interesting to compare OVERALL gearing between the two. I'd be willing to bet the difference isn't as striking as the rear axle numbers would suggest.

Yes, that stuck with me too.
According to the TCCN, the 2GR series of engines is larger than this V35A.

And the timing chain is noticeably lighter and less robust feeling than the ones found in the 2GR engines. Maybe they used higher strength steel on the new chains and could use less material without sacrificing the longevity of it? I’m not so sure.

Given that the V35A has had timing chain failures already in low mileage GX 550, and mind you, these are being built and assembled in Japan, the 2GR is a more robust design with better materials.
