1st Gen Access Cab Door Lock Repair $18

I couldn't find much info regarding a repair of this particular door lock. So, I thought I would leave some pictures and part number to repair the passenger front door of a 2001 access cab. There is info available on web for removing door panel. After that, remove the door lock mechanism. Three screws hold the actuator onto the door lock mechanism. Window track needs to be removed to get mechanism out of the door - very easy. After repairing, test actuator before reassembly. I ordered an actuator assembly which was incorrect, and then an incorrect motor, before I bought the one pictured. Take the actuator apart and then order the motor if you can. In the mean time, your door wont be latched closed and unable to drive - unless you put the latching portion back in.

I've been dreading doing this for a few years. People think I'm a gentleman because I open the passenger door for my wife, little do they know that door actuator just doesn't work and I have to unlock it with the key.

Good write up. I have only seen one other documented process for this and it qas a guy on YouTube who did very similar by only replacing part of the mechanism.

That's good to know! Thanks! Mine quit unlocking. It locks fine, but have to use the key. Both doors are the same

 

I don't think my actuator is bad as the drivers door unlocks and locks from the passenger side key lock, but the driver side won't lock from the drivers side using key but it will unlock. The key only turns a slight amount to "lock" the door (it does not lock). Could the cylinders be frozen in the lock? I've tried spraying "blaster" in the lock cylinder, but no luck. I dread taking the interior door panel off .Thanks for any help.

 

Are you testing with the door open or closed?

It may also be that the bars are binding. Does the interior lock lever move freely by hand? If yes, how does the key behave when the door is closed and that bar is in LOCK position? What about UNLOCK position? (obviously keep the window down for this test)

Wonder if the actuator is stuck in "fire" mode? What happens if you attempt it with the negative batt cable off, so the car is not energized?

Hey! I recently inherited a truck with the exact same problem. Did you ever figure out what the issue was?

 

When my driver door is locked, I can pull on the AC door handle and it pulls the doors away from the cab a couple inches. I think its the part below, the little black V notch mechanism built into the rear door. My driver side AC door one is broken and I think fell inside the door. Do you agree this is most likely why the AC door doesn't stay locked/latched?

I can tell you that it is for sure the reason that it isn't operating properly, however I can't tell you for sure that its the part in the diagram.

 

yeah, I ordered it anyway. The pics in those diagrams are not very good usually so I'll just return it if its not the correct one. I can't find any other diagrams that are better.

What have you found different from what you were dealing with back in May in the thread you started ?

yes, I have not address this issue at all, it is lower on priority list. I did timing belt first and wanted to drive it a little bit before tackling LBJ, UBJ, Struts, and brakes. I will definitely share what I learn in this repair, I do think I'm on the right track as long as this cancel lever is the part I mentioned above.

 

Post pics as you go. I have a sticking cancel lever on my pax side in the winter when temps are low. Suspect old grease
