Ever heard of rod bearings? Usually a rod is thrown when the bearing fails.

Okay, if you’re so sure it isn’t a design flaw with the motor, just tell me what about the manufacturing process in Japan and Alabama is so flawed that after 7 years Toyota hasn’t been able to fix it?

Here are the facts as we know them:
    1. This nightmare for Toyota PR continues despite 7 years of motor failures
    2. There has been a billion dollar recall for 2022-2023 non-hybrids, but no future recalls are planned so owners of 2022-2025 hybrids, some 2023s, all 2024s and all 2025 non hybrids are getting short block repairs when motors fail
    3. The warranty Toyota is giving on long and short block repairs for trucks out of powertrain warranty is a paltry 12 months / 12K miles
    4. A short block repair is going to cost north of $20,000 (close to $30,000 if you want to replace the turbo assemblies) if you’re out of warranty AND crate long blocks aren’t being made available for anyone outside the recall
    5. 2.5 gen Tundras are selling for more than newer, lower mileage 3rd gens, so 3G Tundra resale has been tanked because of this problem
    6. There was the “abrupt resignation” of the head of QC at Toyota motor plant at about the time of the 4th “it’s super, really, kinda, sorta fixed now” public statement from you PR guys
    7. There was a quietly released update for the part numbers of the main bearings in 2024.. whatever that means.. but failures have continued

    I say…

    It wasn't at TMMAL.

It was the Powertrain Manager at Toyota Quality (for all of Toyota North America) @ TMNA HQ in Plano, TX.

In fairness, there’s a zero percent chance I’d be in a GMC if Toyota had fixed this issue in 2023, 2024 or 2025. I literally waited 3 years to buy a new Tundra (2 new Tundras actually). I couldn’t wait anymore. And trust me, as a former GMC owner, I’m not here to defend GM. I’m very much in a wait and see mode. FWIW, my new AT4 HD might end up being the biggest POS on the planet, and if it is, I can promise you I won’t be on any GM forums defending a poorly designed or poorly manufactured product for GM. The reality is that the GM 6.2 is a failure. The AFM system on the GM trucks is a failure. And the 3.4 in the 3rd gen Tundra is a failure too. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the 6.6 gas motor in my Sierra isn’t a failure, but we will see. If the 6.6 turns out to be a turd, you can be sure I’ll be here telling you guys about it.

    Hi @Breathing Borla

Hey, while we are here and discussing shit no one knows about, except maybe 1 of us, who can tell me when we will have a refresh of the 3rd gen and whats new on the 27's. Oh and if you can promise me they won't break anymore by then that would be great:rofl:

    Food trucks? I'd take that!

I'm on day 2 of trying to get the dealer to actually return my calls and tell me what's going on... Or maybe find me a loaner to drive

@sudobash mentioned a PHEV Tundra. I’d be curious to know if that means a bigger more powerful hybrid battery than our current ones? More time you can spend in full electric?

Yeah well, this was what a guy who posted said that for the money you spend on a Sequoia you could buy a nice Lexus and get better service and better treatment. Maybe they are right?

Hey… Im still waiting for you guys to tell me what exactly is flawed in manufacturing since you’re so sure that you’re right and I’m wrong. After I know what’s wrong with the manufacturing process with the 3.4, I’m going to land my billion dollar Toyota V8 “development” contract and I’ll post video after video of tear downs of failed 3.4s alongside the new global million mile V8 with simplified and more robust internal components. I’ll point out every design flaw and failure point. Not Ryan is going to be my project manager.

You PR guys might be worried about how the new V8 is going to lead to downsizing, like the Maytag repairmen worried when they designed washers and dryers that never broke, but there will be plenty work to do defending the inevitable tech problems that plague all new cars and trucks. Trust me.

@sudobash - has Toyota made any statements publicly regarding the cause of engine failures in vehicles produced outside of the recall window?

If they've not, then it would seem that someone assuming the cause remains debris, isn't much different than someone else assuming its a design flaw. Both are assumptions based on zero official information

It had to do with the cleaning procedure post final machining. They weren't inspecting blocks to the extent that was needed.

They also seem to have changed a few bearings and their specs.

Everything else has remained the same. The debris issue wasn't a lie as evidenced by a "not to be mentioned" person's photographs of a brand new short block from the recall period.

The main cap ladder has been used in MANY engines, not just Toyota, for many decades without incident.

You also have to remember that Post COVID, the average factory worker has been with Toyota for 2+ years versus the 15+ years Pre-COVID.

    Nope. Nor will they.

The debris issue was not fully resolved until the first week of November 2024.

100% accurate, I think that had a lot to do with the LC300 not coming to the Toyota brand in the US... (same as VW losing the Phaeton in the US years ago, Genesis going out to become its own brand, etc)

A good friend has a TRD Pro Sequoia that she recently had serviced at a Lexus dealer (under an extended warranty) and she was absolutely astonished at the difference in quality/treatment. Other than a few normally scheduled services across our previous 3 Toyota trucks I've never had any experience with a Toyota service department; this experience has been horrible. While my last vehicle was ~$15k more than my Tundra new (but still not outside Toyota sales prices), dealers are well known to send loaners on a tow truck 2hrs away to your home to pick up/drop off for repairs and service; I know not to expect that from a Toyota dealer, but at least a phone call on the day it was promised would be nice.

I'm positive that there are absolutely stellar Toyota service departments and staff out there in the cosmos, but this one dealer I've dealt with and some of what I've read online exemplify everything I would expect of a low end brand, but with vehicles that don't have low end prices.

Great that is all we need more registration fees from the state and federal government---

this should be roughly 300 bucks to register a PHEV Tundra per year.
