I normally just have my spare laying in my bed but a shop I was at recently got it into the spare location under the bed but not sure if it’s secure there or not.

I have a 500+ mile road trip coming up and the last thing I want is for my spare to fly out from under the bed on the highway. I also overthink everything especially when it comes to safety, hence the post

I’ve got a 295/70R18 under mine as well, but I had to get the guides on the frame drilled out to move it forward enough to sit flush. Also looks like your carrier isn’t lined up correctly with the bolt pattern on the wheel

I’m gonna lower it later to see if the guides are still there. Are the guides in the back or the front? And dumb question but how is the carrier supposed to sit?

Guides are located towards the front of the truck. There’s a prong on the bracket that’s supposed to go through one of the lug holes on the wheel to secure it

Ha good timing, I was just replying again to say I finally got what you meant. I’ll lower it to check if the guides are still there and to get the carrier placed properly.

if they didn’t remove the guides, you think it would be better to just throw the spare in the bed for now?

I got one of them in the lug hole but now the other side is barely catching the other side

Looks like your tab got bent over somehow. The tab with the hole in it on the left side of your picture is what’s supposed to go through the lug hole

There’s a tab on both sides, but when I put the tab in one of the lugs, the other tab doesn’t reach the lug on the other side.

but yeah I think you’re right, the bent piece there is supposed to be pointing up

The tab on the right side of your picture is just supposed to be on the inner edge of the hub opening, not through the lug holes

Yep you’re right. I found a video on YouTube and took a screenshot of it when he was lowering his spare. The attached photo is from the video.

I think you’re right that the tab on the left side of mine got bent. The right side of the photo from the video is what the left side of my photo should be (opposite perspective, but same idea). I also think he has the tire flipped but not sure if that matters.

Yea, it looks bent. This may be a better picture of what it looks like unbent:

amazing, thank you. I gave up on it and threw it in my bed for now. Gonna wait until this heat wave gets the hell outta here to mess with it more. This has been super helpful. Thank you both!

I’m also going to share another video I found that shows both lowering and raising the spare that others may find helpful if they stumble upon this post.
